I did a compilation called THE BEACH BOYS: GOOD TIME, using the following conceit--
It's 1970 and the Beach Boys, for their first Warner Bros. album, have put Brian front and center again, so that--as per their contract with WB--all the tracks have been written or co-written by Brian. Also, his voice is prominent on all or most of the tracks, just like in the glory days at Capitol. Fortunately, Brian was fairly prolific during this time, so there's plenty of material to choose from. Of course, we have to suspend disbelief and pretend that WB would not interfere with the choices and that they would not reject the album as assembled. Anyway, the track list is as follows:
1. Soulful Old Man Sunshine 2. Add Some Music To Your Day 3. Good Time 4. This Whole World 5. Our Sweet Love 6. When Girls Get Together 7. I Just Got My Pay 8. Games Two Can Play 9. H.E.L.P. Is On The Way 10. All I Wanna Do 11. Cool, Cool Water
Anyone think I should add "Take A Load Off Your Feet"? Would that qualify under my "ground rules?"

Too late now, of course, but back in the 70s & 80s, Jeff and Beau Bridges were just perfect for the roles of Brian & Carl.
Right on, AGD! Take a look at Jeff in the 1976 version of KING KONG and tell me that's not the spitting image of Brian Wilson from that time period--except a little thinner!

...dennis recorded in such a fashion that no-one seemed clear as to who held the rights for the material as regards a reissue. BRI said they did... Sony said they did... I think Dennis' estate put in a claim... and I'm pretty sure that JWG thought he held the rights as former boss of Caribou. Now you can see why it took literally years to sort out (with some impressive horse trading thrown in for good measure).
I actually find it amusing that the chaos surrounding Dennis lives on 24 years after his death!

The story goes that Dennis was punched in the throat, and it ruined his vocal chords. You'e got to love that fact that Dennis would still try to sing though. Think about how it would feel to be punched in the throat hard enough to affect your voice. Ouch. It had to have hurt like hell for him to even TRY to sing. But the fact that he would still do it for his audience, says a lot about his charactor.
Hmmmm... was it Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin who allegedly did the punching? I read about that incident. I also read about Dennis walking in on his last wife, Shawn, sleeping in bed with two of her male friends, and he threw a fit, and the two guys beat him up. Geez, when you take all this into account, it apparently could have been ANYONE, at ANYTIME, who did it to the poor guy.

I just listened to POB again today. I liked it much more this time than I did the first time I heard it.
It's not the most commercial sounding album in the world, but it's definitely a cool, creative, adventurous, interesting album, with a lot of effort and energy in it.
In my humble opinion, with the exception of BRIAN WILSON PRESENTS SMiLE, it's cooler, hipper, and more creative than any of Brian's solo stuff.

My thoughts exactly. By '82, the poor guy could barely speak, let alone sing.
Really? No exaggeration? Wow... Have you heard Dennis sing "You Are So Beautiful" from the American Band video? Yeah, actually I have. But I thought that was just a one-time thing, that maybe he was "off" that day or just hoarse. Didn't realize it was a permanent thing.

Having listened to the sound file posted by Heywood Floyd, the actual lyrics seem to be as follows:
Truck driving man do what you can High-tail your load off the road Out of night-life -- I'm a gas, man I don't believe I gotta grieve I'm out of luck With a buck and a booth Catchin' on to the truth In the van, oh it's the last gasp Land in the dust, prosper too much Catch as catch can.
Which would mean that Nick Walusko was right in 2004 after all!
