276  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: January 28, 2006, 08:05:54 AM
Mr. Desper:

Would you have any idea how much postage I should put on the self-addressed stamped envelope that you would use to send the 2 CDs back to me?  (I live in New York.)

Just want to make sure I put enough on the SASE!

Thanks.

I've done similar things with the early 70s and late 60s material, too. (Not to mention making... a "what-if Beatles" album of the members' 1969-70 solo and unreleased stuff.)

I did that with the Beatles too!  I call the CD I made "Odds and Ends," because at the time those first solo albums were being written, the Beatles were at odds with each other, and they were coming to an end.

And one more critical thought -- 1976 was also the year for Brian Wilson's stint on Saturday Night Live.  He lost a LOT of credibility that night with his performance.  At that point, the public's view of Brian's "comeback" was that it was a pure PR stunt exploiting a sick individual.  No one thought that Brian was in a position to do anything on the evidence of that show and 15BO.

I'd love to see that episode.  Any idea who hosted that night?
279  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult Child on: January 15, 2006, 06:36:20 AM
Spot on, Jeff.
Exactly the reason why Love You bombed. They could have put out the cure for cancer and bombed after 15 BO.

You really don't think the fact that LOVE YOU doesn't sound ANYTHING like the Beach Boys, and that Brian and Dennis sound AWFUL, and that the songs are completely loopy, had anything to do with why it bombed?
280  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult Child on: January 14, 2006, 08:59:46 AM
As if 15BO had not already done that in 1976.

But that album sold well.
281  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult Child on: January 14, 2006, 08:30:52 AM
My feeling is that whatever good reputation the Beach Boys still had after LOVE YOU would have been totally destroyed if they'd put out ADULT/CHILD.

As someone else posted earlier, it's a mess.
282  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: 15 Big Ones on: January 08, 2006, 02:58:27 PM
I give this a 2, same rating I gave LOVE YOU.

I kinda like "It's OK," "Back Home," "Had to Phone Ya," "Susie Cincinnati," and "That Same Song."

Brian and Dennis sound awfu throughoutl, Mike's "Everyone's in Love With You" is one of the very worst songs I've ever heard, and most of the covers sound like bantha poodoo.
283  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Holland on: January 08, 2006, 02:54:33 PM
I give this a 3. I place it about at the same level as Surf's Up.

I especially love "Trader," "Sail on Sailor," and "California."
284  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: January 08, 2006, 02:47:55 PM
I give this a 3, but only because I gave SUNFLOWER a 4 and I think this is a notch below that album.

"Student Demonstration Time" is the one I always skip over, and I tend to skip over "Looking At Tomorrow" when I'm not feeling too lazy to hit the "skip" button on the CD player.
285  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: January 08, 2006, 02:43:17 PM
I gave this a 2.

Has some interesting and catchy moments, but it makes me very sad to listen to this album, to hear what Brian had become in the years since PET SOUNDS.

Considering the craftsmanship of their 60s albums, and their early-70s works like SUNFLOWER and SURF'S UP--the wonderful performances on those albums, the quality sound--I still cannot fathom how all five members agreed that LOVE YOU was ready for release.

Same goes for 15 BIG ONES.
286  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: January 08, 2006, 02:39:07 PM
I give this a 4.

Great album, but it gets a point taken off because it's not quite up to the standard set by PET SOUNDS, and because of "Tears in the Morning."

You take off "Tears in the Morning" and put on "San Miguel" instead, and you've got a DAMN great album.
287  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW Surf's Up solo piano Q... on: January 07, 2006, 08:39:55 AM
To me, Carl is just performing the song.  Performing it VERY VERY well, mind you, but just performing it.

In Brian's version, there's a real, deep emotional connection to the material that comes through very clearly in the performance--a connection that couldn't possibly exist in the Carl version, because Carl didn't conceive, develop, and write the song. It's not his "baby." if you know what I mean.

I really like the 1971 Carl-sung version.

But I LOVE the Anne Wallace Brian-sung version.

Worked like a charm!  Thanks, Ian!

I have a JPEG I'd like to use as my avatar--it's the same one of Captain Kirk that I used at the old board.  Can anyone explain to me how to make it part of my posts?

I checked out the instructions on how to do it, but they didn't really help me.
290  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW Surf's Up solo piano Q... on: January 01, 2006, 03:05:30 PM
I think the Anne Wallace version is the best one I've ever heard.

Glenn, Steve Desper said he made a version similar to that when they were remaking the track in 1971.

Jason,

Yeah, I read that in Steve Desper's own thread a few weeks ago.  Apparently it sounded great.  Would absolutely positively LOVE to hear the Desper version.  I wonder if it still exists?

There has to be a nicer way of putting it.

Ermmmm....Please read the fodaing rules? I dunno, this niceness business never sat well with me. I'm a Male Ego guy at heart, y'know.

Unless you're a board moderator, why make it any of your business anyway?  Especially if you're going to be rude about it?
293  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite unreleased Beach Boys/BW song on: December 31, 2005, 07:37:04 PM
But really, welcome aboard, Glenn...

No welcome needed.  I was a regular at the old board.

But thanks anyway!

Any chance someone could send me MP3's of Stevie and the Sunflower-era versions of Back Home and Big Sur?  I'd love to hear them.
