Thank you very much, Mr. Desper!
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: June 12, 2013, 09:45:12 AM
Hi!

I'm a longtime member who's been away for a while and only now learned about the Stephen Desper study videos.

Do they still exist? I've been trying to check out Heroes and Villains and Break Away--two of my very favorite BB songs--but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it. The links to the password--and to the videos themselves--appear to be dead.

Any help would be appreciated!
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SUNFLOWER ESQ Issue! on: February 20, 2011, 05:59:26 PM
Is it too late to order this issue?

Also, if I send in a check for the issue, would I need to include a note indicating which issue I want to receive? I noticed on the Web site that there are back issues available as well, and I wouldn't want to receive the wrong issue.

Thanks!

5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is it time to reappraise 15 Big Ones? on: November 25, 2010, 06:51:43 AM
Dennis & Carl didn't really lose faith until even the 'oldies' tracks that had had balls were drained of any life at all in the released versions...

What was the reason for this? Why did the released versions turn out that way?  And why were Dennis and Carl powerless to prevent it from happening?

Enquiring minds want to know!  Smiley
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New BW Album - No Mention Of A Certain Mr Leaf on: September 06, 2010, 03:54:36 PM
So what happened between Leaf and Team Brian?

I understand if you can't go into details, but even in a broad sense, what could have gone down between them, after all these years?

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New BW Album - No Mention Of A Certain Mr Leaf on: September 06, 2010, 10:27:19 AM
Yes , rather than be sued I do find it rather strange that Mr Leaf gets no mention in the Liner Notes  Roll Eyes
What can I read into that Huh?

Why would Leaf be sued?

(I haven't really been keeping up with recent goings-on in Brian's world.)
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Best of Brian-less Beach Boys album on: September 03, 2010, 07:08:49 AM
Brian does the ba-ba-bas on "Long Promised Road".
Are you sure? It doesn't sound anything like him to me.

Not only is it Brian doing the ba-ba-bas on "Long Promised Road," he also harmonizes with Carl at the end, repeating "I'd love to see you" as the song fades out.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which album has the worst flow? on: April 01, 2010, 09:29:49 AM
Really? Sunflower?

I thought it flowed well with the Dennis tunes intertwined with BW songs and others....I hate how It's about Time and Tears in the Morning are right next to each other....they're polar opposites.... How would you improve it?

Side A

1. Add Some Music To Your Day (start the day)
2. Got To Know The Woman (meet the girl)
3. Slip On Through (our love is growing)
4. Our Sweet Love (could last Forever)
5. Forever (so I'm going away)
6. Cool Cool Water (off into the ocean complete with storm)

Side B

7. Tears In The Morning (reminding me I'm missing you)
8. All I Wanna Do (and when I close my eyes - let's make up)
9. This Whole World (now here comes another day for your love)
10. Deidre (good things turn bad, but it's over now - you're back again)
11. At My Window (a little brown sparrow came fluttering down - poof!)
12. It's About Time (end with a rocker - I'm singin' in my heart, I'm singin' love...)

SJS,

I sequenced the album in iTunes based on your list above and listened to it yesterday.  It works really, really well!
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Had Sunflower been a hit... on: March 30, 2010, 11:52:40 AM
... do you think Brian would have remained an active participant in the Beach Boys and managed to avoid the steep decline he experienced in the early to mid 1970s?

I've seen it suggested that he took the failure of the album very hard, as if it were a final repudiation of Brian and his work, and a message that the public didn't want to hear from him anymore.

Had the album been embraced then and there, when it first came out, do you think it would have had any effect on Brian's self-esteem and his mental state in general?  Or do you think things would have played out exactly as they did in real life?
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower Is 40 Years Old on: March 09, 2010, 01:01:56 PM
For me, taking out "Tears in the Morning" and replacing it with "San Miguel" would make SUNFLOWER a perfect album.  Which is exactly what I did on a recordable CD.  Smiley

Also, just FYI, I made a compilation CD of all of the Brian-written (or co-written) material from that era (1969-70), as if it were going to be a new, Brian-centric Beach Boys album (which is exactly what Warner Bros. wanted!), and titled it GOOD TIME.

Here's the track listing I came up with:

THE BEACH BOYS: GOOD TIME

1. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
2. Add Some Music To Your Day
3. Good Time
4. This Whole World
5. Take A Load Off Your Feet
6. Our Sweet Love
7. When Girls Get Together
8. At My Window
9. I Just Got My Pay
10. Games Two Can Play
11. H.E.L.P. is On The Way
12. All I Wanna Do
13. Cool, Cool Water

Eh, Tears in the Morning is awful, the real sore spot on the album.

Amen, brother!
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tracks Absent from GV Boxset on: February 26, 2010, 06:12:18 AM

Correct... which is why "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" wasn't on there: Carl said "no".

1) Did Carl say "no" because of that one small gaffe, where he sings "Soulful old man SHUNSHINE?"

2) If so, couldn't he have gone back into the studio and fixed it for the box set?  The way the Who finally fixed that infamous bad edit in "Eminence Front" when they rereleased IT'S HARD on CD in the mid-1990s?

You bumped an ancient thread which probably would have stayed buried to say "delete it"?

Errmmm.

I meant, please delete my post--NOT the whole thread.

16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: December 21, 2009, 08:59:21 PM

My take is that a lot of the malice directed at "Kokomo" stemmed (and still does) from the fact that they, and not Brian, had the hit.

That's my take too.  And to go even further, I'd say that if Brian had been included on the song, even in a vocals-only capacity, the song would be regarded far more highly by BB fans.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Latest from Jon (Stebbins, that is) on: December 21, 2009, 08:45:56 PM

I'm thrilled it isn't Peter Ames Carlin or David Leaf who's doing it, btw!

Whatcha got against Peter Ames Carlin?  His book on Brian was excellent.

19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian, Carnie, and Wendy according to Dr. Landy on: October 26, 2009, 02:02:03 PM
In the infamous TV news story that Diane Sawyer did about Brian and his relationship with Dr. Landy, there was a point where Landy, being interviewed by Sawyer, claims that the reason why Brian is not in touch with his family is because of the emotional pain that they put him through.

Landy then adds something like, "The daughters worst of all."

Does anyone know if there's an OUNCE of validity to Landy's claim?

My understanding is that Carnie and Wendy were more or less cut off from Brian for most of their lives.  So what kind of interactions could they have possibly had with him that they could cause him more emotional turmoil than anyone else?

Or was Landy really just a total, complete, sack-of-sh*t liar?

And Al tinkered with Loop De Loop for what -- 30-plus years?

And after all those years of tinkering -- the song still sucked anyway!   Evil

The best SMiLE fan mix I've ever heard is one song and one song only ... the Anne Wallace mix of Surf's Up ... for me its the diffinitive version.

Amen, brother!
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / The Beach Boys perform "Surf's Up" live, 1972 on: September 11, 2009, 10:42:19 PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hka63YG4z0&feature=channel

First time I've ever heard this performed live by the Boys.  It's sparse, but quite good.  Carl is AMAZING.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower Live on: July 31, 2009, 11:55:17 AM
I'd pay to ensure Deirdre & Tears In The Morning don't ever again get played live.
Tears, however, is like this large, horrible blemish right smack dab in the middle of an otherwise wonderful album.  I think that Sunflower would have been MUCH better off with one less track.

Why make the album shorter when you can just replace the large, horrible blemish with a far better track?

I put together my own version of SUNFLOWER on a CD (now on my iPod): I dropped "Tears in the Morning" and replaced it with "San Miguel."

Turned a very good album into a GREAT one!
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your personal SMiLE mix on: July 22, 2009, 09:19:05 AM
Submitted for your approval:

1. Our Prayer
2. Heroes and Villains (single version with "cantina" section added, as per BWPS)
3. Do You Like Worms?
4. Barnyard
5. The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine
6. He Gives Speeches
7. Cabin Essence
8. Wonderful
9. Look
10. Child is Father of the Man
11. Good Vibrations
12. I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
13. Vega-Tables
14. Wind Chimes
15. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
16. I Love To Say DaDa (with "Water Chant" incorporated at the beginning)
17. You're Welcome
18. Surf's Up (Anne Wallace version--it simply cannot be topped)

I like it, Glenn. Very similar to BWPS, with "Surf's Up" and "Good Vibrations" flip-flopped; but I agree with the change. I'm curious if you ever experimented with flip-flopping "Our Prayer" and "You're Welcome"?

Thanks, Sheriff!

Knowing that "Our Prayer" was always intended to be the album opener, no, I never thought to flip-flop it with "You're Welcome."  In my sequencing, I consider "You're Welcome" to be the lead-in to "Surf's Up," which I see as the end of the journey.  With "Surf's Up," you've reached your destination, and as you're arriving, you're greeted with the message that "you're welcome to come."
