Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Timothy Leary on...BW?
|

So I came upon an interview of Dr. Leary (via Dangerous Minds). Conducted shortly before the doctor departed this mortal coil, he was interviewed by the infamous Canadian punk rock gadfly, 'Nuadwuar'. Nuadwuar has a long history of conducting odd, stream of conscious interviews with celebrities - some of which roll with it, some of whom take offense. Anyway, here's the interview - with a question posed by Nuadwuar c/o acid and Brian Wilson. The doctor opines on Brian at 2:43. The BW segment runs for about a minute. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9xVPWhZkUE&feature=player_embedded#!

I'm convinced that another album would be warmly received by the fans (as well as many pop journalists) simply because I believe Brian has hit his stride in the past 8 years. You only have to listen to the Bacharach experiment, the TLOS outtakes ala Message Man etc. to determine that that flow led to the quality of TWGMTR.
Having said that, unfortunately the whole corporate nature of BRI is about as convenient as parallel parking a Buick; every full-on BAND release would need the proper amount of marketing and yeah, touring to do it proper. We most certainly saw that in 2012.
A noble question; would you be disappointed to hear a new Beach Boys album as emotionally satisfying (and yes, rocking) as TLOS which only hits the mid forties on Billboard? That's the new reality in today's marketplace. Asking them to reconfigure for a new set of big band tours (while satisfying to us) may be asking a lot of the boys. And THAT is why recording a new album is tricky for me. Not the album per say (it'll be killer) but all the bells and whistles that have to go into it.
Speaking as a selfish fan, I'm comfortable with a rocking album that doesn't necessarily set the charts on fire. In our own personal top ten, it'll be just fine. And what's wrong with that? I'd like to know...'cause here (they) go...again!

I had such great hopes for the album after reading the Beach Boys interview in Musician Magazine. (any scans of that available btw?)
After picking it up back in the day, sure - Carl was a powerhouse on his tunes, but I got the feeling of a band still unsure of its studio bearings. You get that smooth Beckley, Lamm & Wilson sound juxtaposed with the obvious retro stuff like California Calling. Overall, it's a meh to me, although it has its moments. Can't say I reach for it very often, although I do like Getcha Back.
Funny how TWGMTR managed to walk that tight rope successfully without tipping over - Yacht Rock and Art Rock. Nothin' wrong with dat.

I'm cautiously optimistic they'll put something together for the summer of '13. A couple high profile east coast/west coast gigs, and a dozen or so in the heartland. Doesn't mean it'll be near me, but I just like the thought of them keeping it going. Hey... someone has to promote the upcoming boxset (apart from Phil).

Personally I don't think it is upholding their legacy, playing some random football game on the same bill as Bad Company.
IMO it's just reverting everything they accomplished with the C50 tour. But let's not go down that road, we beat that horse to death... a few times.
It is good to see Mike and Bruce out and about, all the BB's are having a nice rest following a crazy 2012.
I was jus' bein' a wisenheimer. But yeah...dead horse topic for sure!

We need a long, investigative thread devoted to the full history of Banana and Louie. Theories will be proposed, debates will ensue, tempers grow short, and then SWD will announce "Where do you guys get this stuff...I was THERE!"

Agreed! She did mention that she enjoys cooking it as opposed to wolfin' it all down. Likes to see people enjoy themselves.
What I was thinking was how the heck does her husband remain skinny? Imagine having a regular diet of Hungarian Pork Chops or her recipe for Mac n Cheese? Moderation my son, moderation...

Did you catch that line? Joey: ...so you PINCH and ROLL... Carnie: yeah, kinda like rollin' a joint! I love Carnie. I know she seems kind of overexposed sometimes on these reality programs, but you can tell she's probably a blast to hang out with.

The classics vs. rarities argument is a circular one, and I'm certainly guilty of spinning that wheel - but really, that ship has sailed. I don't think that many people in 2012 had eureka moments hearing some rarity and said - Never heard that one before...huh, I'm gonna buy that record!
That ship sailed roughly around the time the 80's arrived and they became 'America's Band'. A corporate branding, really. Which is fine, since you gotta have the business to go along with the art.
I really hope we're not seeing a renewal of the whole PS boxset internal politics delay. Hopefully it's just a matter of industry schematics.
