That's true. Time is the enemy in all these things. You can't fully appreciate the band without appreciating the impact in its' day. To those born after the fact, it's like imaging yourself living in another era.

Fantastic set list! I was privileged to see Van Dyke perform at a small nightclub in Portland (with string quartet) back in '10. With the right touch, I don't see why he couldn't arrange a cool little 15 show tour showcasing the deep cuts. The right acoustic indie band (someone with cred) would insure the right numbers and the right crowd.

Not me. You young'uns will never understand that moment of AWE when you buy a 'just released' Beatle LP. Bring it home, examine the cover art and/or liner notes, and then...have your mind BLOWN when the needle hits the record.

For me, it was the White Album. G.C. Murphy, Thanksgiving weekend, 1968.

I then took the album over to my friend's house (who was MUCH older...he was 12). We listened to it, discussed the lyrics, and debated their meaning. It was deep man, in '68.  Afro

My bad. Thought of that later circa the timeline of the show...long hair threw me off.

Okay, the ecstasy and the Bruce.

Thank you for that! You got it all right there...those harmonies! Adrian Baker! The agony and the ecstasy!

While the rest of the band look presentable for a network gig, here's Bruce in his Hawaiian and shorts. Pure dork and cheese.  Thud

Get some Canadians in there. Michael Buble, K.D. Lang, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young.

There's a new series on Velocity that just started - 'AmeriCarna'. The promos of the show include an interview with Mike - one and the same program? (if you click the first clip you'll see the Mike excerpt)

Why the hell would you blame me for the asshats on youtube. All it takes for the average person to dislike Mike Love is to look up "Beach Boys Rock and roll hall of fame" to see Mike hogging the stage like a complete wacko. Also, Mike has toured with the BBs name for 50 years but It doesn't mean it was healthy or good to do so. The 1980-1998 Beach Boys under his leadership were a joke of a recording live act with Carl and Al marginalized. This  period turned the group into Mike's tacky solo group in everything but name only. It took BW's solo touring and release of smile to get Mike to actually put on a good show with deeper cuts beside the "hits" and covers that Mike sang thousands of times with a horrible nasal "whine" that was a parody of his classic voice. I don't like Mike Love because he "ruined" BW, its because he is an absolute joke as recording and performing leader of the BBs who can't see the forest for the trees for why the BBs are legends.

This pretty much sums it up for me.

Hey, the fence is down and the cows are in the field. There is NOthing on God's green earth that can change popular bias other than Mike coming 'clean' and (as noted) accept a little humble introspection in how everything went down in the day. "It was the drugs"...yeah, sure it was. No...it was family who while blood, were growing apart from one another over the years.

A CLEAN AND SOBER Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson would STILL STILL STILL have issues with Mike Love and his overly sanitized corporate carnival-show branding of the band in the 80's. (Of course, a clean n' sober crew might have settled this discord as well, but so it goes)

It's just that Mike's a willing target, that's all. And quite deserving of much of the cynicism directed his way. He made his bed...let him meditate in it.
187  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Boxsets We Would Like To See Within The Next 5 Years on: January 19, 2014, 10:30:06 PM
The perfect new BBs set would consist of about 70% stuff I already own, with some live tracks and remixes added.  It would carefully avoid any/all recordings that could lead people to believe that B-Dub is in any way weird, and it would be called something like "California Summer."

Also, certain albums should be remastered, but other albums--preferably some of my personal favorites--should be skipped arbitrarily.

To cap it all off, the members of the band should participate in yet another public feud, leaving it clear that they will most likely never perform together again.

Hey, weird, this is exactly what i want too! The market definitely needs something like this. Maybe another possibility for the title could be "Pet Summer" to really highlight the fact that the Beach Boys were a surf band that made the masterpiece Pet Sounds out of nowhere and disappeared thereafter. The cover should be done on Microsoft Paint to keep it consistent with releases from the past few years. I'm thinking something like surfboards lined up on the beach or, like, an orange or something. Just something that really screams summer. Or how about an illustration of the Beach Boys performing inside a summer dome while the rest of the world outside is an icy tundra?

All excellent suggestions! Keep 'em coming...

Let it go, Disney. The original comments were just that...a flippant remark, not commentary upon race relations. Please restrain yourself from the politics of 'gotcha'. Everyone's got a cellphone, everyone's got a twitter, everyone's Edward Murrow. All about the context, amateurs.

Andrew didn't say he was better better or greater, or comparing himself with Muslims as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. He just said what he said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this.

I'm confused, this really isn't Al Jardine, right?

Yes, It's Al recording under his jazz persona

Al actually suggested his composition "We're In This Love Together" for the MIU album, but Mike felt it wasn't 'fun' enough.
190  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MAN!! YOU GOTTA LOVE THIS!!!!! on: November 27, 2013, 11:06:11 PM
And why is none of this listed on Andrew's Bellagio site? See...with every passing year, more and more mysteries come to light with this band.

Wasn't there a cover put together for his book called Adjusting The Mike?

192  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike interview in HuffPost on: November 02, 2013, 05:14:12 PM
Just pure speculation here -- but maybe if Carl had still been alive in 2007 the Beach Boys as a whole might have been honored.

Interesting possibility. Showing my true bias here, but I'm glad the band did not receive the award. I'm glad that the spotlight was on Brian - because he deserved it and perversely the band deserved it. Any opportunity to honor the true architect of the sound is fine by me.

Throwing open the gate to the 'whole gang' would've invited inevitable Mike Love rooster-struttin' about how his lyrics are all about spirituality and positivity and mom's apple pie. That would've diluted the effect of alerting America to the talents of the true architect. And that's the way it should be, Kokomaoists be damned.
193  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 28, 2013, 12:27:17 AM
Caught last night's show at the E.J. Thomas Hall - stunning. I was actually a little on the fence on attending, considering it was to be a long drive, but I'm glad I did.

It was only last July when we first saw this post C50 manifestation of Brian, Al and David, and I was fortunate to catch that show on a damp night in Pittsburgh. At the time I noticed that while the music lived and breathed with mostly Al and David acting the part of 'MC', Brian seemed a little distant, and a little off as the night wore on. Not tonight though - the man was in fine spirits and strong voice. Comparing tonight's set to opening night in Pittsburgh (pre Beck), the band just seemed tighter, the vocals spot on, etc. To be expected, but impressive still. Will make a fine DVD if it happens.

Full disclosure - I'm a song writing guy, I'm not a lead-guitar guy. I've never worshiped instrumentalists the way I admire songwriters and producers. Now when they compliment one another, that's different. That's when the magic hits the pot. Guitar wankerisms aside, the Beck set(s) actually worked - a nice contrast to the hits (albeit, deeper cut hits). As already mentioned, Prayer into Surf's Up with Beck's lead finally becomes Dumb Angel incarnate - here's your teenage symphony to God.

Set list pretty much mirrored Toronto and Detroit. Let's hope they can keep this combo going in the new year. A new album and a new Beck/Wilson tour in the UK would be very, very well received. You chaps are gonna dig this.

One more thing: I planned on simply picking up a cheap balcony seat and enjoying the show. No fuss, just a good night of music. I walk up to the counter, and the teller tells me:

"Sir...a gentlemen has returned his ticket to the box office. He can't use it, and he asked me to give it to someone who could. I'd like to give it to you. Congratulations - enjoy the show...for free!"

($75.00 seat Orchestra floor to the left of the sound man - exceptional sight lines and SOUND)

Yes...I saw tonight's show gratis. I'm Mr. Lucky. Later on tonight, I'll share with you tomorrow's Daily Number and the Pick-4.

I pieced together a backing track for the song (culling all the moments of vocal silence in the song and pieced those together). I LOVE this backing track.

Very nice. Wonder if Brian ever bumped into Vic Mizzy at sessions? Adams Family, Green Acres...that's what Brian's tapping into here.

With all due respect Sheriff, I was AT the Pittsburgh show. Whether or not the inclusion of Dave and Al is purely to move tix, the end result is you had two lively linchpins driving the entire show stage center. Probably the closest we'll ever get to a reunion. The real contagious energy that Al brings to the proceedings (not to mention a flawless voice) makes any BAD&Beck show far more interesting than a typical hit parade. Leave that stuff for sloppy seconds at Sea World.

As for his quotables, I fully agree with many here who basically said 'if you had to endure what Al has endured, he has the right'. Damn straight. He is saying what I would say. And I have loads of class. Loads.
