Most of us haven't read it, but the excerpts confirm what we expected.

Makes me wonder - is Mike expecting some type of mea culpa from the industry? And just who is going to give it?

Industry peers? Doubt it. Will we see any fellow musico's come out in favor of this whitewash?
The journalistic community? So far, it doesn't look good.
The fans? Well...aren't their opinions hardened already? The closest he came to a reevaluation was C50, and that went down the commode.

I just don't see how he wins here. Just don't. He gets his word out, but he still ends up the same bitter, defensive old fool that he's always been. Like a bug in amber. Permanent.

I may have this all backwards, but assuming the publisher submitted the edited extracts to the Daily Mail to publish (which I would assume would be the case), it's funny that Mike and his publisher went to the Daily Mail for publicity for his book; was it not the Daily Mail that was part of the mid-2000s lawsuit from Mike regarding the free CD promotion?

As was the Daily Mail the source of the Evan Landy interview (referenced by Mike in one of his many set-the-record-straight recent interviews).

To me it's the old axiom of throwing sh*t up on the wall, and hoping for the best.

A lot of books coming down the pike.

We got Mike's opus, closely followed by Brian's perspective. We may even get a fascinating manuscript from Rocky.

But will the world be ready for this?

4  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: April 27, 2016, 03:41:25 PM
So did any moderator have any discussion about any of these matters with AGD before banning?

And to follow up on Cam's thought; which one of you were in the Book Depository and which one of you were on the grassy knoll? Because you know, there has to be a conspiracy going on here.

Leaving my own personal bias aside, I still don't know what would propel him to engage in this destructive vendetta. I'm oddly fascinated by it. I really am.

A personal attack against a man's family is something far beyond debates over auto tune. And that would apply to Mike's family as well.

Anyone who would engage in such behavior deserves the olde English tar and feather. There's no moral relativism going on here...it's the third rail.

No hypocrisy, just common sense.

Anyone who would want to PM about it, feel free.
My theory is that he managed to piss off someone in Brian's circle and was ousted from it. I can't think of any other reason why someone like him would do this. Maybe it was health issues, and if so, that's really sad. But I guess we may never know.

If that's the case, then one of his friends should confront him on it and help him work through it. As was mentioned, he wasn't like that back in the old Cabinessence board days. Something is off, and he needs to reflect on that.

(sigh) The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

AGD in happier times...

Doe's ban is all for the best. Something changed with Andrew in the past three years that made him a bully on the board.

 Rock!

Reap what you sow.

I've often thought that Andrew should have been a mod. His board presence was that strong.

Absolutely not. This has nothing to do with a person's historical knowledge. This has to do with temperament and behavior (libelous behavior) which goes over the line.

Look. I still find it incredulous that Andrew did the things that were detailed in Chuck's initial post. As Emily mentioned, I've been surprised before and misread people before, so anything is possible.

In light of his exhaustive contributions to the world of BB research, it stands to reason that he must have engaged in activity which proved so libelous, so abhorrent, that it rendered his legacy moot. As it stands, I take the opinions of the mods at face value; Chuck needed to do what he had to do. I thought Andrew was a better man than that, but apparently he's deeply, sadly flawed. I hope he takes the opportunity to do some badly needed soul searching and come out a better man. He's become this generation's Brad Elliott.

There's also the quote, which I guess has to weighed accordingly knowing little about the guy, from Larry Dvoskin saying:

“Mike 1000% c*ck blocked Al Jardine & Bruce from having any of their songs on the record out of self interest.”

One can be nearly absolutely certain that the above subject will be completely ignored in Mike's book, in contrast to the almost sure bet that Mike will complain (and expect widespread sympathy) about how he himself was so unfairly treated during the same album's songwriting process.  If Mike's gonna complain, I wish he'd just outright state that he deserves special treatment, as I assume he feels.

There's nothing out of the ordinary in having band members pursue power moves to have their own work presented on a long-awaited reunion album. Although I have my own personal bias regarding Mike, there's nothing going on that wouldn't occur within any mega-group reunion.

What I DO have issue with is the lack of empathy, a mea culpa if you will, regards to the wishes of his fellow band mates. Not unexpected, in fact most expected in this biz, but a little soul searching revelation (in the book) might just make the codger come off a tad less mercenary. My money is that there will be no mention of any behind the scenes maneuvers.

The idea that a subset of fans have more trouble getting over something (e.g. C50) than the actual members is something worth pondering. But I think, especially after the immediate aftermath and all-around disappointment from most fans, we all "got over it"...

Except those for whom the very mention of a certain name causes their eyes to glow a terrible, baleful red, the frothy drool to start dripping from their lips, their incisors to grow a good foot and their few remaining brain cells to turn to mushGrin

Is that an exact quote from your foreword to the book? If so, I'll have to seek it out.

I really honestly don't understand your motivation is Cam. What is at your centre? What drives you?

Cam?

I'm fine, thanks for your concern.  Did you have a Beach Boys question or comment?

Yeah, he wants to know if you have like an agenda, or something. Not to get all "Dr. Phil" on ya, but yeah...he wants to know your modus operandi. But you already know that. LOL Now it's time to spin, spin, spin away. Like a RUNAWAY DANCER!

Really. Having to reach for reading-specs nowadays, I can't bemoan an audiobook format. And if it benefits those who benefit, all the better. Don't try to twist what I said.

Simply, because of all things Love, there's something funny about a Mike Love narration. When that nasal kicks in, it's gonna be funny. But then again, as the saying goes, your mileage (and sense of humor) may vary.

I'm not twisting what  you said. You complained that Mike would spend time recording an audiobook (or as you called it "a thespian reenactment of his book" and "his audio re-enactment") but not watch Love and Mercy, and you acted like it was some massive ego-trip on his part.

And no, I don't have much of a sense of humour about disability accommodations, as it happens.

Neither do I. But the pure audio sensation of a Mike Love reading strikes me as exceedingly funny. Yuk yuk funny.

If you can't separate the forest from the trees, then well too bad.

Betcha some Mike fans buy the audio just to hear their personal rock n roll Jesus.  And that's fine (and has nothing to do with disabilities). Some of us snicker at the thought!

When the reviews come out, I hope someone here purchases the audio book.  Wink Interestin' listenin'.

For gosh sakes, he never had the time to watch Love and Mercy, but he had the time to devote to a thespian reenactment of his book.

"One more time Michael. Syncopate it. Say druuugs, with disdain in your voice."

And by "a thespian reenactment of his book" you mean... an audiobook. Like any book released by a major publisher will have.

Yes. An audiobook. Any book? Really? Learn something new everyday. Wonder if Brian's book will have an audiobook? I'm really too arsed to look it up right now...

Of course I'm being snide, Andrew. Something just tells me he'll devote more to his audio re-enactment than he does to vocals most nights. Why? Because setting the record straight is more important to him than air, water, and food. The elements!

Carl no sooner sees Stan and I as we walk in...when he blurts out, with a mouthful of cold cuts...

Stephen tells Al of this DEVELOPMENT... who STATES... I'm APPALLED ... in fact he say's... I'm APPALLED twice!   (in between bites of his ham and cheese sandwich)

Am I the only one who picked this up? It obviously all comes down to the ham! Razz

PF - You have solved the mystery to this whole discussion.   There was something in that ham!  And Brian is in Australia in a day or so.  For God's sake, Brian, stick to the beef or chicken!  Thanks.  I needed a laugh.
I don't think it's just ham. Carl was in trouble with the cold cuts.. I think stay away from sliced meats altogether.

Emily, great detective work.  It could be all sliced meats.  God, the horror!

I'm so glad Pretty Funky was going to try to warn Brian in Auckland, before his trip to Australia, as long as his mouth wasn't full, of course.

I'm thinking that, if we're going to address the great Catering Crisis that faces all humanity (well, concert performers, anyway) that we should move it to the Sandbox, though.  This is serious sh*t!

Catering crisis indeed. Sliced meats are endemic in rock and roll!

Rocky, if it your objective to make things right and bring justice to this matter, why don’t you give a copy of the tape to Brian Wilson?
Smiley Smiley Because I took it even one GIANT step further... and took a meeting with Brian's Lawyers at the Mezzaluna restaurant... and PLAYED it for them! They, then, got me MY OWN Lawyer... Charles English... who got ME IMMUNITY!  And then the SH*T really hit the fan for MIKE... (to the tune of millions)...to know the rest... you'll just have to read the book when it comes out!  And it will COME OUT! Smiley Smiley

Rocky - help me out here...if Brian's attorneys have the tape, why didn't they act, since this is "to the tune of millions?"
Smiley Smiley THERE WAS PLENTY OF ACTION... JUST NOT MEDIA EXPOSED... UNTIL NOW!!!  I cannot tell any of you any more... you will have to read the book when it comes out! Smiley Smiley

Okay, the book, the book, I get it. But are you inferring that an out of court settlement took place? A Pauly Walnuts sit down? A Come To Jesus moment?

If so, it may account for Mike's current sour attitude. Interestin'.

Back to the Steve Love topic... what do we know about Steve? Married, kids, things he's done in life broken down by year... does someone have any sort of timeline of his life? I'm still not clear why he is to be doubted.

Ditto. Let's focus on the topic at hand. If Rushton wants to jump in, so be it. He has the right, as do the in-crowd / morally sanctimonious.

If anyone knows where the skeletons are buried, it's Stephen. Hence his separation from brother Mike. Which is stupid, basically...blood should be thicker than water. No exceptions.

Doo Dah, you have found the answer why Mike is so angry recently about the songwriting lawsuit from 1994.

He wants the catalog or money from BW when it comes up for ownership changes in under the 1976 copyright act. Actual songwriting credits on those songs be damned. Evil

I'm just saying, it occurred to me last night. What would appear to be ancient history (circa 1992) is not quite so ancient.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Steve Love A Credible Source? on: March 21, 2016, 12:50:10 PM
Last night on CBS I caught word that McCartney is perusing a recapture of the Beatles publishing catalog, under the terms of the US Copywright Act of 1976. As per the link below, the United States' 1976 Copyright Act gives songwriters an avenue for reclaiming lost publishing rights on songs released before 1978. All they have to do is to wait 56 years – meaning that songs like Love Me Do, released in 1962, will be eligible in 2018

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/aug/11/paul-mccartney-beatles-back-catalogue

To my knowledge, Brian does not own his publishing. He merely received an awarded settlement, which led to Mike's lawsuit. Could this mean that the Beach Boys publishing circa '62 to '66 will be available in the next few years? If SO, it would behoove Brian, Melinda and all interested parties to put this dog to bed. Once and for all.

If possible, you can bet your bottom dollar that all kinds of merda would hit the fan from Mike.

Quote: I wonder how Van Dyke Parks would react to this thread.

He would probably respond in riddle-form.

I'm curious; why is their affair the unmentionable? I'm not one for cheesy sex jokes, myself, but surely it's pertinent. It's kind of the elephant in the thread.

Exactly. Makes me wonder if he'll address that in the finished book.

Bottom line...if you're famous, your pecadillos are fair game. Doesn't make for a pretty picture, but that's show biz.

Once again there's no candidate that I really support, but Bernie is not right for America.

Cause he talks sense and has real solutions to the real issues facing the US?

My favorite parlor game is engaging wide eyed simpletons when they say..."but he's a SOCIALIST! A SOCIALIST!"
To which I reply..."Yeah, and those social security benefits you receive are socialist. And so is that Medicare that covers 80% of your doctor's bill, grandpappy."

To which they just go..."ahhhh...but he's a SOCIALIST!"

Well, ya know; when this book hits, it's going to provide an entirely new source of raw historical documentation. It may well render its predecessors (such as Bellagio) somewhat...dare I say, declasse'.
