51  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: An Apology. on: August 22, 2012, 06:57:03 AM
There are some other members who annoy the crap out of me, still I was shocked and dissapointed by some of your posts, a couple of days ago. But I think you take the apology serious and life is too short to dislike each other. After all we love one of the greatest bands ever. Ethan, just don't take the cynical posts too serious. We are some crazy lot here!  Grin

Good luck finding some! I am also thinking of going over there and see both London shows and Arsenal vs Chelsea. Though as you said there are some great seats left but the prices exceed my budget.

In case anyone was disturbed by the pictures he posted, I edited them out of all the messages that had them.

Thank you,
these images were disgusting and I would have never thought to see something like that on a Beach Boys message board.

I hope he is alright, such a nice fellow.
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's vocal on California Saga Single on: August 10, 2012, 09:14:20 AM
I read on wikipedia that the album and single mixes are different. I have the Holland version which is the album one and I think I have the single version from the Warmth of the Sun comp.  I know Brian sings the open two lines, but I cannot hear him anywhere else. Is this version just the album version "fixed" or do I not have the single version still?  If not, can someone pass me a youtube link?  In any case, could someone tell me where else he sings? It says that he sings in the verse verse but Mike is singing by himself. Thanks for the help.

WOTS has the album version. You'll find the single version of that song (plus the single versions of "It's ok" "Rock and roll music" and "Here comes the night (disco)" on "Best of the Brother years" (best of the Beach Boys vol. 3)

Thanks for the heads up! The single version of "Rock & Roll Music" sounds light years better. Where can someone find the different version of "Come Go With Me" or was there never an official release?

61  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 61: Warsteiner HockeyPark Arena - Möchengladbach, Germany August 5th, 2012 on: August 06, 2012, 04:27:18 PM
Mönchengladbach was the “weakest” of the german gigs. Shortened set without intermission and the guys rushing through the set without interacting with the audience too much between songs. Dave made all mistakes gone and played awesome, but funny enough he messed up on the second verse of “Getcha Back” forgetting the words and mumbling inaudible words and then some lines that did not rhyme. I was surprised that they played “Good Timin'”. My biggest request for the german tour. You can imagine how I felt. As mentioned before Mike got in too late for “Be True To Your School”. David touched Mike once too often after helping him to get back on track again.  That confused Mike a little bit. During the whole intro Brian's eyes followed Mike without any face expression. I really wonder what was on his mind. During one song Scott Totten tuned his guitar and the sound was much less. I know I am counting most of the times the mistakes, but only because I find them interesting and funny sometimes. That's the magic of live performing. The audience was really lame, complaining about some rain drops, well after all this was an open air show. The crowd seemed bored by the non hits, especially during “All This Is That” and “Heroes And Villains”. Some went to get more beer. I really felt proud of the boys, still performing that songs, they sounded great on H&V. “Ballad Of Ol' Betsy” was, as always, a strong performance and even got some cheering every time. The car medley was celebrated as much as the cover songs. Al's ones always sounded strong and was great to sing along to. At the end we got in front of the stage it was super cool.

We had great seats, 2nd row, 4th row and again 2nd row, always in front of Mike and Al. I paid a lot for them but I would do it again, so to speak. Speaking for myself it was almost too much to concentrate on, so much was going on onstage and I especially felt in love with the backing band. I know in Mönchengladbach, where it felt like the people were asleep, some girls wondered about me, singing to every song but I was so proud of them doing some rare songs and yeah, the boys acknowledged it and I still feel like being in heaven. It was so great making eye contact with them and even Brian once looked my way. Stuttgart was the best if I had to pick one. One of my happiest days in life and the most important thing, my brother had a great time as well. He is a much, much bigger Beach Boys and Brian Wilson fanatic then me and had some harsh moments in his life, so I hope, that I could bring a SMiLE to his face and heart.
62  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 60: Hans-Martin-Schleyer Halle - Stuttgart, Germany August 4th, 2012 on: August 06, 2012, 04:22:48 PM
Stuttgart was even better with “Marcella” being in the set and the audience going really wild, though it seemed to me there weren't that many young people there like in Berlin. While waiting outside the arena we heard the Boys doing their sound check and they ran through “Let Him Run Wild” three times. Bruce this time didn't play a wrong note on “Disney Girls” like the day before, instead his voice once didn't nail the right tone. Still a great performance. I was only disappointed by David Marks quite a bit. I don't mind if he wants to improvise on his solos but he played some really weird licks and there were more than just one bum note there and you could really tell by his face expressions that he wasn't happy with them either. I think it was at this concert that Al muffed “Cottonfields”. “God Only Knows” got some great responses by the crowd. During all 3 concerts Brian didn't really seem to be in a great mood, I thought it was hilarious every time the camera guy  came to his side. Brian was nervous, always looked for him and then even encouraged him to take some pics. Brian put on his smile and it went as fast as you can imagine after the cam guy was gone. Al burned his hand during “Add Some Music”, I couldn't make out what was on Brian's piano but it's there every night. At one point Jeff made fun of Brian and I really felt sorry for him because it didn't seem that Brian was too happy about that. Jeff, well he sang and played great but near the end he seemed almost drunk by dancing on stage and laughing while singing. He even skipped the intro to “Barbara Ann” and the whole band got out of rhythm and you just had to see the look of Scott Totten. Al walked around during “Kokomo” with his tambourine and I don't remember  seeing him sing once into a mic. Stuttgart was very enjoyable and we got our Beach Boys program there, which is lovely put together.

Back after 3000 km cruising through Austria and Germany in 5 days. It was an exhausting trip but worth every drop of sweat and cent we spent. First of all it was great meeting some of you guys and we should definitely repeat this some time again. Rob is really a fun guy and it was nice talking to Jukka and Lowbacca,  I just would have wished to talk more with the others as well. I didn't go to the after party as well because we drove right after the gig to Stuttgart. It was our first time in Germany and it was great, lovely people there, I understand them even better then in Austria.  Grin  And yeah, they sure have some beautiful girls.

We shall start with the Berlin one. We got to the arena early and there was one guy who made a comment about my Pacific Ocean Blue shirt. Later it turned out this guy was Rob. He told us some very fascinating stories and you could see the sparkle in his eyes when telling them. Suddenly he made a strange look and then he was there: Brian Wilson escorted in a car, my heart was bumping, it looked as he wanted to get out. But he was very nervous, even though they were maybe just half a dozen fans waiting there. They still used another way then, maybe with the staff it looked like too much people for Brian or his “chaperone”.  After the enjoyable meeting at the boat we got to our seats, second row in front of Mike and Al. I was overwhelmed by seeing my heroes. After all it was my first Beach Boys show my brother saw Brian 5 years ago at the Vienna opera house, but that's all. Right at the beginning Mike gave me a thump up and pointed to my POB shirt and I was like in heaven. Al gave me one as well since I sang along to pretty much every song. (Yeah thanks to Jukka I had a glass of beer too much).  Wink

I was impressed by their set and the guys were on that night. Brian lost his voice for only a brief moment for “I Just Wasn't Made For These Times”. It was so much fun seeing the backing band and David jam on “Pet Sounds”, brilliant. I never really much cared for the Brian Wilson band but they won me over. Mike D'Amico's playing and sound was superb. The guy next to me was blown away and we talked a little through out the concert. At one time he said to me that Darian sounds just like Carl on “Darlin'”. I disagreed, it didn't really sound like Carl but his voice was awesome in his own way and was a real highlight. Brian repeated his line on “California Saga” at the end but no one caught on it. Fun moment during “Add Some Music” when Brian started singing one of Bruce' lines with the latter looking confused and then Brian shared a giggle. The only low point was the ending with some drunk guy getting in front of me and waving with his hands in front of my face and bawling to “Rock And Roll Music” and “Barbara Ann”.  Sorry for my limited English but I hope you could still enjoy my Berlin review.

Thank you, Lowbacca! I owe you a beer for that.

We'll be leaving soon too, I hope we manage to get there since our car is not allowed for the environmental zone there.

Welcome, UncleBobo!

Great set, now I am relieved for the german gigs. Are you sure about "Big Sur" though?

I was wondering about that too. I think it was a great board with lots of information, nice folks and all was neatly arranged. At least the old mountvernonandfairway board seems to be back again. Coincidence?
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Endless Bummer: The very worst of The Beach Boys on: July 10, 2012, 06:43:30 AM
This stuff has been around forever. The Brian talking to 2 nerds is when a fan (who shall remain nameless) snuck a tape recorder into Brian's room in SF in late 1981 while the group was playing there. Brian talks about City Blues, Sweeite and Stevie.

Ahhh, the fan is (well) known, then? I assumed it was just a couple of random guys.

I think he even posts here.
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: June 30, 2012, 05:10:31 AM
That's my favourite track on the album too, I actually enjoy all songs minus the car medley. Yesterday I was watching the Endless Summer TV Special and the campfire part is great and reminded me of the Party album's ambience.
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child is criminally underrated on: June 25, 2012, 07:33:52 AM
Al looks good, yeah but Carl looks awesome with the shades. The cover is pretty neat too.

Does anybody know if the song charted anywhere? With more promotion it could have been a minor hit. Another thing that comes to my mind: I read on the german message board somewhere that "Crocodile Rock" was a top 3 hit, of all places, in Uruguay. Can anyone confirm that? I never mind "Crocodile Rock" but the falsetto (Matt?) sounds horrible, making too much fun of the Beach Boys and the video is awful as well.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Problem Child is criminally underrated on: June 24, 2012, 01:15:41 PM
I really like the edited version without the children's laugh. Some live versions were great as well though Mike seemed really embarrassed doing the intro part which made me giggle. At one point I gave a friend of mine some Beach Boys files to rehearse, he was our drummer, and the only two songs that he  liked were "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Problem Child".

Didn't Bruce once said he regretted doing that song and "Make It Big"? Well, I'd take both over "Kokomo" any day.
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: All-time favorite Beach Boys harmony? on: June 17, 2012, 12:23:32 AM
If we are talking true harmony, as in barbershop harmony, there is nothing that comes close to the open of School Days. Take that from a barbershopper's son. Of course the other stuff above is great too.

Are you talking about the album version? Sounds horrible to my ears. The live cut is another story. To add some later stuff I love some bits of "Goin' On" and especially the intro to "Island Girls".
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: June 17, 2012, 12:12:54 AM
In Austria the album "Still Cruisin'" peaked at 12 and the song even at 11, so sometimes you get to hear that song now and then.
