1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TLOS DVD on: September 10, 2008, 11:39:25 AM
a serious misstep as far as I'm concerned, especially when the band ran thru the whole of TLOS at least FIVE times for the cameras!!!

Then again, releasing the whole thing would make sense, which is precisely why it wasn't released.

A question for you Jeff, as you obviously have good contacts - how "live" were the Capitol performances? - they sound too perfect to be completely live to me.  Also- do you think the forthcoming DVD mentioned above will be based on these same performances, or something new?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW to Make Global Announcements at Capitol Records Monday on: May 19, 2008, 12:01:44 AM
From "California Role"
"You don't have to climb the Capitol Tower, or play the Hollywood Bowl, if there's a roll in your heart and a rock in your soul"

But of course Brian's doing both, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the TLOS release date is around the Hollywood Bowl dates.

Very astute, Jeff!! (did you write the press release also!!?)

How plausible is this:
Capitol agrees to release TLOS...in exchange, Brian agrees to allow Capitol to release a Smile sessions box set?

I can dream, can't I?

I may need to change my pants more then once if that happens.  Cheesy

That would make two of us.

Then again, in BB/BW-land, nothing surprises me.  Stranger things have happened.

I certainly don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that we might see some archive material being made available in some form or another.  Whatever did happen to the propsed Beach Boys's Central anyway.

Another exciting possibility for US fans is that, IF the announcement is about TLOS, then Capitol may insist Brian does some promotion in some form............... You may get your TLOS concerts yet!!!!

It's either going to be......

1) A BB Reunion

I guess in that case the other BBs would be there too...

Exactly right - though announcing their prescence beforehand would somewhat spoil the surprise if that was true.

I'm guessing TLOS will be released through Capitol and getting an international release date (hence the 'global' announcement). If thats what it is, I'll be a happy man.

By the way, have you guys noted that it says 'announcements', plural?

Possibly it's an opportunity to promote the upcoming singles box set too? (i'd guess along with many here that the main announcement will be relating to a new contract for TLOS and possibly other releases, and since it was reported that a film crew was in for the recent recording sessions, I would imagine they'll be around on Monday also...........)
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW- master of the fade out? on: February 28, 2007, 12:41:31 PM
"When I Grow Up" - I like the way it reaches what could easily be a non-fade out ending (...what willl I be.(pause) .When i grow up to beee a man" - and then has a little fade out anyway
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: is everything Jeff Fosket sings golden? on: February 24, 2007, 09:56:00 AM
my favourite song of his is e.xkate - just the thought of Jeff on a skate board.......
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW solos on vinyl- their sound? on: February 15, 2007, 08:22:45 AM
GIOMH was released on vinyl - as a double album on a  see through yellow / orange vinyl. I thought the sound was improved from the CD esp on tracks like "City Blues" which sounded brasher on CD. I wish though that they would just use high quality balck vinyl (same though applies to the recent Pet Sounds double) as coloured vinyl generally seems to have more imperfections(I'm sure this is not true for Japanese coloured pressings though).
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Definitive \ on: February 08, 2007, 01:25:50 AM
or the version of "Fun.Fun, Fun" with Status Quo......
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Definitive \ on: February 08, 2007, 01:24:08 AM
Did anyone mention "Sumahama"??
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Soulful Old Man Sunshine -- When did it become known? on: February 02, 2007, 01:08:32 AM
there was never a completed mix of the sessions until the Hawthorne disc, and that was (obviously) the first time I heard it.

It's actually on "Endless Harmony" Luther (I get those two mixed up also) - I've never heard any other versions (and my version of Landlocked doesn't seem to have it.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1968: the Year of the Beach Boys Waltz? on: January 31, 2007, 07:21:15 AM
I wouldn't go so far as to call using 3 in rock as unusual (especially if you expand from 3/4 to include 6/8 and 12/8,

6/8 is essentially (usually) 2 beats per bar as opposed to 3  - 2 groups of 3. I'm also a big fan of Brian's use of triplets (butI think the third Shin's album is the best of the three so what do I know huh?

Try ignoring Pete, too. He is not very clever.

(Sorry Pete. Also, just talked to Kyle, who is pretty interested in the idea of a Sept. London trip...can the city withstand it?)

We'd be happy to see Kyle!!!!

Try using a CD-r rather than a CD-RW  (not many players other than computers can deal with these) and look for an option in Audition to write an AUDIO disc rather than a DATA or MP3 disc

AIFF i've just found out is an "apple" thing, but if I put a commercial disc in my mac I see AIFF files. Maybe it automatically comverts .cda files to this format. As you said, .cda files are how music is stored on a commercial CD but they cannot be stored in this format on a computer.

Good luck
14  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: File Extension Format to Burn CD on: January 28, 2007, 01:36:38 PM
Finally - I believe that the CD has to be formatted in a certain way (with indices) in order to play on an audio player. I don't think it's enough to burn a disc of .aiff tracks. A program like iTunes or Toast / Jam will do this for you.

How are you writing the discs??
15  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: File Extension Format to Burn CD on: January 28, 2007, 01:32:40 PM
also - some players that will play CD-r discs will not play CD-RW(rewritable) discs
16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: File Extension Format to Burn CD on: January 28, 2007, 01:30:29 PM
a standard audio CD will have the tracks in aiff format. If you use, for example, iTunes  or Toast to burn an audio rather than an Mp3 CD then this is what you will get.

All CD players should play aiff format - some will play mp3 (but by no means all)
However, some CD players do not like cd-r discs (as opposed to commercially produced discs.

Seems to me your main problem is not using aiff format, but the CD-R issue may be a problem too on older players
Hope this helps

really liked it. Reminded me of Phillip Glass for some reason (which is actually not such a far fetched idea as a lot of his work involves a short idea, repeated many times - Somewhere I have an album he did with artists such as Paul Simon etc but I'm too lazy to dig it outof my Vinly collection and I can't remember what it was called - anyway - it's on those lines in places - nice one Luther

21  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Overrated artists/albums on: November 23, 2006, 12:45:33 PM
In recent years I've been puzzled by the success of Franz Ferdinand and Dido.    Sting, Bob Dylan and Led Zep  have never done it for me (I'm not denying they have talent though). I enjoyed just a couple of Eminem tracks so to me his popularity seems to be way in excess of his talent (IMO). I think "Sgt Pepper" is overrated  - there are better Beatles albums (Abbey Road and Revolver).  Coldplay started off ok with "Parachutes" but have become bland as their success and their sense of self importance increased. I have always admired Radiohead though (apart from the very first album)

nice organ and guitar work. Coda took me completely by surprise - would like to hear more bits like that.........
23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Best bands/artists of the past 6 years on: October 07, 2006, 03:51:38 AM
Far and away my favourite group of recent years is Dolorean - a group from Portland, Oregon led by songwriter Al James. Their two Yep Roc albums "Not Exotic" and "Violence in the Snowy Fields"  have become real favourites. It's kind of alt.country with influences of Elliot Smith and the Jayhawks - but they have their own distinctive sound , somewhat downbeat at times but there is beauty in the bleakness. A group I wish more people would take notice of
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Written and recorded today. on: September 21, 2006, 12:09:13 PM
I liked it a lot - nice harmonies, I  liked the simple arrangement too and the lack of complex time signature and key changes. How different do you think it will sound when the band get hold of it? Any gigs yet?

By the way, I hadn't heard that song before--Grief Never...

Last time I send you any of my project's Luther :-) ;-) ;-)

I agree, it's a rubbish song
