1226  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Pet Sounds on: February 20, 2013, 02:34:53 PM
As my first post in this board I'd like to say that Pet Sounds is the most incredible and beautiful thing that has ever come to my ears, and made me a firm believer in the following quote: Beauty will save the world.

There is no bad day with Pet Sounds. I wish it'd last forever (or maybe a rest every 3 hours for some Friends to jump in and make my life full)
Well said! Wonderful album and I love it to pieces.

Really depressing album. The versions of Wonderful and Wind Chimes here are just horrid when you compare them to the versions on Smile Sessions... I wouldn't say it's a terrible album but it's definitely uncomfortable to listen to. Even the classics like Heroes And Villains and Good Vibrations are kinda shrouded in the dark atmosphere the album creates. Gah... it's a tough listen.

Some freakin' awesome stuff here - I Can Hear Music, Bluebirds Over The Mountain, Our Prayer (though admittedly it's horribly placed on the album), and Cabin Essence are my favourites. Very good album indeed! 4 stars.
1229  Smiley Smile Stuff / Other Solo Albums / Re: Pacific Ocean Blue (DW solo) on: February 20, 2013, 09:34:24 AM
Really lovely album. Calm and warm-hearted - I'm finding myself playing it regularly.
1230  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: February 19, 2013, 10:16:23 AM
I will always hate myself for this, but Student Demonstration Time is... *gulp*... a guilty pleasure.

The lyrics are so awful they're hilarious, but I never thought the actual sound was that bad. It's at least interesting to hear the Boys having a straight up rockout once in a while. But yeah, it is by far the worst song on the album.

Rest of the album is awesome and one of my favourites of the band.
If they hadn't changed the lyrics and just kept it as "Riot In Cell Block 9" I might have actually enjoyed it.

It's a shame because I personally think the chorus sounds really good. It's Mike Love's goshdarn lyrics...

I don't get anyone who calls themselves a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan and can't recognize a great tune from his pen. But what a lotta folks around here are best at is disliking the band's music, and talking about it incessantly.
That's eerily true.

Although MIU and LA are sub-par albums, everyone seems to have at least one song they like from them. Not many people seem to have a problem with "My Diane" or "Good Timin'". Even "Goin' On" from freakin' KTSA gets a fair amount of praise here. It doesn't seem that every track is terrible - it's just that there's the occasional big stinker that goes and ruins everything. More or less everyone hates "Belles of Paris" and the 10-minute disco version of "Here Comes The Night". Do you think if you were to compile all the more tolerable tracks from the BB's worst albums, it would make something worth listening to?

She's got rhythm is the one song where mike outshines Brian vocally IMHO
Hate to admit it, but... agh, so true. I love She's Got Rhythm, but Brian's falsetto, man...
1234  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: February 15, 2013, 03:58:24 AM
I don't hate this album or anything, but I don't think it's... that good. Most of the songs are just stupid ("Johnny Carson", "Honkin' Down The Highway", and "Love Is A Woman" especially), but they're at least enjoyably stupid. And very short. I guess it's bizarre fun but it kinda feels like the wrong sort of bizarre - I prefer the goofier SMiLE stuff for this sort of thing. Not at all bad though. 3/5

Jeez, that was horrid. What showoffs!

Taylor Swift's cover wasn't that bad though.

I love She's Got Rhythm. I remember literally nothing else on the album.
1237  Smiley Smile Stuff / DVDs and Videos / Re: Brian Wilson presents SMiLE on: January 28, 2013, 12:33:07 PM
The documentary is great! The extras were pretty good too (especially the Van Dyke Parks/ Brian Wilson interview), though I do wish there was more they could have put on there... there was nothing wrong with the fan video of Heroes and Villains, but putting it on the official DVD release did kind of feel desperate. Nitpicks aside it was awesome.

1240  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Child is father ...... on: January 27, 2013, 11:19:33 PM
The intro bit (first 24 secs) feels tacked-on, I think it was put there so the very start of the song wouldn't be so similar to the very start of "Look" but it hurts the flow IMHO

The more I hear it, the more I agree with that. It's a cool little section, but doesn't jive at all with the sounds he was using for that track in '66. I've always started my "Child" mixes with the chorus - it starts the song off quickly and hooks you in right away!
Aw. I loved the intro.
