101  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hillarious Misconception on: August 17, 2015, 02:38:37 PM
Reminds me a bit of this gem...

Brian: Mike, you're good with words...can you take a look at this?

Mike: Anything for my cousin Brian!  Lemme see that there.

*pauses*

Mike: Yeeeeeaaaaa, these lyrics are just way too depressing Bri.  Let's inject some positivity!  How about "I just wasn't made for these FRIES"?  Like, we're already at the hamburger stand, she still has the T-Bird's keys, but the fries are cold...so she splits, right?  So like...*hums a melody*...yeah, yeah so she cruises down to the beach...it's midnight right, so the moon is creating a really beautiful phosphorescent glow on the waves...

Brian: *laughs* Ah Mike, the song is already done.  Tony and I wrote it in five minutes!  FIVE MINUTES!  Can you believe it?  I just need you to proof-read it, you know?

Mike: Oh, uh...yeah, sure...anything for you Brian. Hmmm...a-ha, you wrote "were" in the second line when I think you meant "where".

Brian: Wow Mike, I didn't even notice that!  Second line in and there's a huge mistake! Oh man! *laughs*  Cool, thanks.

Mike: So...I like, get a co-writing credit for that, right?

Brian: *laughs loudly* Hahaha, yeah sure!  Yeah, a co-write.

Mike: I'll just write my name right at the top here then...

Brian: WHOA, no no no.  You're serious?  You want a co-writing credit for that?

Mike: Well, why not?

*awkward silence*

Brian: I'd like the pad of paper back now, Mike.  I'm really busy right now.

Mike: Can I keep the pen?

Brian: No, that's my only pen.

Seeing Cabinessence pop up on a psychedelic 60s compilation was a nice surprise:

Yeah, on the whole the Bambu stuff doesn't touch POB, but this one's a highlight. The Dumb Angel Rarities version opens with 50 completely gratuitous seconds of percussion, which might be why I prefer it.

Actually it reminds me a lot of Winds of Change. A much better written song, but a similar sound.

Emitt Rhodes' debut album. From this I'd say he sits nicely alongside other great singer-songwriters of the early 70s... the music here sounds to me like a cross between hippie-era McCartney and the Raspberries - lightweight but hook-filled and skillfully crafted pop. He also performed every instrumental part and every vocal on this, pulling it off with as much expertise as Rundgren. Good solid power pop, this.

Yeah, it's a fantastic little pop song.  And for me the one time on that album the overstuffed production actually does the song perfect justice... it's full-on Spector!

What's the story behind the instrumental "Why" on the Made in California compilation?

It sounds like it could be from the Paley sessions, but I can't find anything on it.
It's off the MIU sessions - November 18th, 1977.

Aye, some fantastic pictures. This is the most eerily 60s I've ever seen 80s Brian...

116  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The songs that saved the album.. on: May 31, 2015, 01:14:16 PM
I'm a bit of an MIU apologist... it's quite possibly the most vapid thing they ever released (with the exception of My Diane, of course), but I never really found it offensive. It's nice to listen to (well, apart from Brian's falsetto on SGR, which he makes up for with the vocal on Match Point and SGR being a bloody great song).
LA, not so much. Too many ballads in a row, too many of them mediocre, and it's kind of a dreary experience... to the point where the standout tracks for me are Lady Lynda, something so sincerely proud of being a piece of schlock that I can't help but enjoy it, and Shortenin' Bread, which is the only halfway fun moment on the record.
And I believe I think of KTSA what most other people think of MIU: it's miserable. Goin' On is the only salvageable thing there, in my opinion. I'd like Sunshine more if it weren't for the calypso instruments. I guess the single version of School Day is alright just because the alternate acappella part isn't as unpleasant as the album cut's.
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Creating the ultimate Beach Boys mix-tape (playlist) on: May 28, 2015, 07:24:36 PM
That's a fantastic playlist. I got next to nothing to add. In the Back of My Mind? The a cappella Can't Wait Too Long snippet, maybe?

Mister Grisley listened without ears. One would buy escorts without human papillomavirus and cucumbers or watermelon, but granny preferred walking with books inserted into her basket.

I adore that cover! They released it a year and a bit ago on the Electricity By Candlelight CD, which has a bunch of favourite songs Alex played solo to audience members when the power went out during one of his concerts. He did two other Beach Boys songs: Surfer Girl and Wouldn't It Be Nice.

Wings' Wild Life. Deeply flawed and I ought to hate it, but it's a real grower.

Edit: Having got to know this album a lot better, I can tell you that "Some People Never Know" has become my absolute favourite McCartney tune. Beautiful vocal harmonies and a killer middle-eight.
