Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Bicycle sounds in You Still Believe In Me live
|

As we know, You Still Believe In Me was called In My Childhood when Brian recorded the backing track, which is why the bicycle sounds are there; the entire track as a whole has a very childlike sound to it. But then either Tony or Brian decided to change the theme of the song, came up with new lyrics, the bicycle sounds no longer fit this new theme, but they couldn't be removed, so they were left there.
Now Brian is performing Pet Sounds live, and the bicycle sounds are still there in the song. Should they still be there? Wouldn't the song be better off without them, considering the lyrics are about... well... infidelity? Would you prefer they left the sounds in or out?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Backing Vox 'Let's go away...'

According to wikipedia, the track for Let's Go Away For Awhile was recorded on 1/18/1966, and the string overdubs were recorded the next day. And according to the internet, the (touring) Beach Boys were in Japan from 1/7 to 1/23. So, assuming no further recordings were done for the song, it's impossible that any of them are singing or playing on the track.

It's the same instrument/sound that appears between 1:22 and 1:24, right?
EDIT: BTW, I just noticed that the soundwave for the stereo mix of Let's Go Away For Awhile is inverted when compared to the mono mix (and to the backing track that's missing the string overdub.) I wonder if the other stereo mixes in the PS sessions box are also inverted...
EDIT #2: Wouldn't It Be Nice and You Still Believe In Me are inverted as well (meaning that in the soundwave the peaks become valleys and vice-versa). Interesting...
EDIT #3: And... the SACD stereo mix has the same polarity as the mono mix.

If a set of the 1965 sessions isn't released before the year is over, does it mean those sessions become part of the public domain? What does that mean for us? Can we go to Capitol HQ and ask for a free copy of the sessions? Is Capitol under legal obligation of making a free copy available somewhere/somehow? As long as I can get my hands on those sessions, I really don't care if I have to pay for them or get them by some other (legal) means. But what are those means?
Also, does it mean that people can legally distribute the bootleg recordings of those sessions?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / You Are Still A Mystery lyrics

I got a new pair of headphones today, and since every pair sounds different, I've been listening to all my favorite songs to see if I can spot things I haven't heard before, sounds buried in the mix and stuff like that. Anyway, after rewinding and playing around with different EQ settings for about 30 minutes, I think I can finally tell what the background vocals in the chorus of You Are Still A Mystery are singing: Tell me your secrets... Don't try to hide... Give it to me straight, now... What you keep inside... Need a little hand, now... Don't play with me... Gotta find the key, now... You are still a mystery. The first part has been confirmed by Andy Paley in this interview: http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2013/09/04/beach-boys-collaborators-stephen-kalinich-andy-paley-interview/The rest, I'm pretty sure that's what they are singing. Like, 95% sure

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love and Terry Melcher
|

There are several stories about how Brian met and started working with his non-BB collaborators (from Gary Usher to Joe Thomas and everyone in between), but how did Mike start working with Terry Melcher? I know they knew each other since the 60s, but it seems like they didn't do anything together until the 80s. Were they always good friends? If Mike was looking for a new collaborator, how come he didn't turn to Bruce? By then he was a Grammy award winning songwriter, he was the other half of Bruce and Terry (if that's the sound that Mike was drawn to), and they seem to get along just fine. I hope Mike devotes a chapter or two to his relationship with Melcher in his upcoming book. Until then, what do you guys know?

Just got back from the movie theater, and wow. I really really really liked it. As a hardcore fan, it's very hard for me to be objective and judge it as just another movie. I'd like to think that people that have no idea about the Beach Boys history will enjoy it just as much as I did, but who knows, for some reason some people don't even like Beach Boys music. But I'm a fan, and this movie, above all, is for the fans. The amount of detail and research that went into making it is way beyond what I was expecting. I'd say that 70% or 80% of the movie is just reenactments of things we've heard in studio sessions, or footage we've seen in documentaries, or interviews we've read in books or magazines, and most of them are word for word accurate. It didn't have to be this way, I don't think any fans would have complained if certain aspects were altered or even omitted; the only explanation is that all of that stuff is there just to make the fans happy. I won't spoil any of it, but trust me, you'll be amazed. Artistic liberties were taken here and there, the chronology doesn't always add up (no Today, Summer Days or Party after Brian stops touring, for example), but otherwise it would have been five hours long. I'd say the only victim of these liberties is Mike. Granted, I wasn't there in the 60s and can't say how things really happened, but I think he is portrayed as a much angrier person than he really is. A lot of the things he says in the movie are indeed things he's said in real life, but here he is shouting the words, not just saying them. The Landy scenes are very disturbing. Since so much of the movie is accurate, it saddens me to think that maybe this truly is the way Landy treated Brian. The movie doesn't really touch on Brian's self destructive behavior (Brian mentions that he wasn't a good husband or father, but that's about it), so it may be hard for people who are not familiar with the whole story to understand how something like this was allowed to happen, but still, he's so evil in this movie... And he's also used as a plot device to touch on something that I really wasn't expecting: that Melinda may also be trying to just manipulate Brian. At one point he tells her "You are so manipulative... You think you can control Brian, too? Get in line". That was shocking to hear, I felt like I was reading one of the nastier threads in this message board More surprising is that Melinda doesn't answer back. It's left to the movie watchers to make up their own mind about it. Of course, Melinda is portrayed as a good person throughout the whole movie (as I'm sure she is in real life, just to clarify), and at no point are we given the impression that her intentions are anything but good. Still, it's something that could have been left out of the movie, but I'm glad it was included, and I thought it was handled very well. Like I said, this movie is for the fans. The version I watched didn't have One Kind Of Love during the credits. First they show a live version of Love & Mercy (from the Brian Wilson On Tour DVD, perhaps? Need to check that), and then they start playing studio sessions for Good Vibrations. I loved the sound editing. Again, I don't want to spoil anything, but most of the times I got goosebumps was because of the sound. If you can, you should definitely watch this in a movie theater, with proper surround sound. One of my favorite bits: Melinda: Is it true that you stayed in bed for two years? Brian: No... Three years. At least that's what I tell people when they ask about it. Brian admitting that he likes to mess with interviewers, loved it

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anyone else configured their own Life Suite ...

I've finally been able to listen to the whole album, and the first thing I thought of was putting together my own Life Suite. Still not sure about the playlist... I had read that This Beautiful Day quotes a bit from Summer's Gone, but what I also noticed is that the melodies for Half Moon Bay and I'm Feeling Sad are almost identical. I wonder if that's why I'm Feeling Sad was left as a bonus track. Anyway, I think mine would be something like this: 1 - This Beautiful Day 2 - I'm Feeling Sad 3 - Half Moon Bay 4 - Whatever Happened 5 - Strange World 6 - Tell Me Why 7 - Think About The Days 8 - From There To Back Again 9 - Pacific Coast Highway 10 - Summer's Gone I'm so used to listening to those last three songs in that order, I don't think I could place them anywhere else. The rest is still a work in progress

It's cool when he's playing Sail Away at the piano, too bad the sound is so buried under the interview. Very nice video, I wonder if we'll get a DVD out of this.
What are the lyrics in that sheet of paper Al is holding? I can make out something like "Let's see what she can do", "Take her by the hand" and "Catch her if something something"... I still haven't heard the full album, but I know those lyrics aren't from The Right Time. However he's wearing the same clothes on both shots, so I guess he sang more than one song on the same day.
