1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: Today at 12:36:02 PM
Beyond my frustrations with the "move along, nothing to see here, nobody knows, etc" mindset that I mentioned here earlier, what amazes me about this box set issue is to see just how many artists have been releasing deluxe box sets in 2020, and how many more are in the pipeline for release in the coming months. And a lot of these are artists who are much more of a niche market and a smaller audience than the Beach Boys.

It's confusing to see an issue of "demand" being mentioned regarding the BB's box set while artists who would sell far, far less sets do not seem to have a problem releasing these sets to their fans. And it's not like these other, more niche deluxe sets are CDR's packed in white window envelopes or something.

Further on that point, as we had cartoons and memes circulating back in early May about people stuck at home "finishing Netflix" and similar jokes about running out of things to do during this mess, what better time would there be when the audience for home entertainment and home media is currently as large as I've ever seen it since the dawn of the internet.

Again, I just don't understand what the resistance is with this one. I cannot understand why the fans should need to convince someone or something within the band that fans will indeed spend money to buy this set if it's released. Absurd.

Maybe being too demanding isn't the solution here

Real talk, some of you people need to learn that if they release it on digital only, it's not that big of a deal

So are we just going to make a thread like this everytime a song of theirs is played on a series or movie?
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Friends 20/20 Double Album on: April 08, 2020, 01:21:19 PM
Hey all. With being trapped in my house the past few weeks, I have decided to come up with a double album tracklist combining Friends and 20/20. This was inspired by the excellent alternate history essay "Tales Of An Alternative History". Let me know what you think and make some suggestions!

Side A:
1. Meant For You (Made In California)
2. Friends
3. Wake The World
4. Be Here In The Mornin'
5. When A Man Needs A Woman
6. We're Together Again (Made In California)
7. Passing By
Side B:
8. Anna Lee, The Healer
9. Little Bird
10. Be Still
11. Busy Doin' Nothin'
12. Diamond Head
13. Transcendental Meditation
Side C:
14. Do It Again (Made In California)
15. I Can Hear Music
16. Bluebirds Over The Mountain
17. Be With Me
18. All I Want To Do
19. The Nearest Faraway Place
Side D:
20. Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song)
21. I Went To Sleep
22. Time To Get Alone
23. Never Learn Not To Love
24. Can't Wait Too Long (Made In California)
25. Break Away (Made In California)
26. Celebrate The News (Made In California)

I would save Celebrate and Break Away for the 1969 album, Maybe have both versions of Ol Man river, one  in side C and the other ending the album

You don't have to put the word
So, for the past couple months, a local record shop has allowed me to scoop up all of those "collector's album" LP's, where fans had put out hard copies of the unreleased Beach Boys albums.  I now have most of them - both editions of "Smile," both editions of "Adult Child," both editions of "Califo(r)nia Feeling", "The New Album", "Merry Christmas", and the 'random unreleased tracks' comp "Carl And The Passions: Made In USA."

One problem.

No "Landlocked."

I actually asked the store today if they'd seen that come in, and they were fairly certain they had sold it (he asked "that had a tan cover, right?").  I took to eBay, where - for the first time I've seen - they DO have a "Landlocked".... in not great condition, and priced exponentially higher than it should be.  (The other albums in the series have cost me about 25 apiece.  This was well over 100.)

So, being a Beach Boys forum, I want to put feelers out - does ANYONE have a Brother Records "Landlocked" to spare?  Name a price.  If it's under 100 (including shipping), I'll buy it.

Comment:   There is no album "Landlocked."  It is a myth fabricated by the fan base.  This subject is covered in my book Recording The Beach Boys in the addendum to part one..~swd

You really don't have to put the word Comment before everything you say you know

Maybe we need “the most normal pictures of Mike Love thread”!

How about exactly that except without a hat?

Ya know, you need to stop being so hard on Mike.

Yeah, poor, poor pitiful Mike. He's had such a rotten life. Just feel awful for him.  Cry

Yeah he has done some bad sh*t, but so has everyone else. It's almost comical this grudge you have on Mike.

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Had SMiLE been released, what would Brian have subsequently done? on: July 06, 2018, 11:44:41 AM
I once wrote an "alternate history" of the Beach Boys after SMiLE.   My thought was that if SMiLE had been released and been successful, the Boys would have played Monterey (so no Lei'd in Hawaii, but maybe something a lot better), and certainly no Smiley Smile.   Wild Honey would still have happened, but probably released in time for Christmas 1967...sort of around the time of John Wesley Harding.

1968 would have maybe been a double album (like the Beatles) that was essentially a combination of Friends and 20/20, perhaps even having all the Brian songs on one record and the "Produced by the Beach Boys (a.k.a. Carl)" stuff on the other disc.  So of course there's no 20/20 but maybe a killer live album in 1969, sort of like a Live in London but with the quality of a Get Your Ya Ya's Out.  That alone would satisfy their contract obligations with Capitol as 20/20 was designed to do.

At this point, I had the band breakup with one last album (Sunflower, or maybe titled "Landlocked").  I figured at this point Brian and the rest of the band would be at creative odds, BW might be dealing with drugs and mental illness, and everyone might just want to go their separate ways.  That's not the end of the story, and I can certainly post the whole thing if anyone wants to read it.

Please do! And a tracklist too if you don't mind!
