I thought they were pretty adventurous in the early seventies:
Surf's Up has 10 tracks and 9 of them have been played live. So Tough has 8 tracks and 7 of them have been played live. Holland has 9 tracks (not counting the fairy tale) and 7 of them have been played live.
Note: Tree has been played only once (Long Beach 1971, Brian plays organ). Also one known occasion where they played He Come Down (Luxembourg 1972) and Big Sur (Hartford 1973). I heard a rumour that they also played Beaks of Eagles once or twice.
Of course, these 'deep cuts' have always been combined with their hits. A song like Rhonda changed drastically and really became a rocker in the early seventies, and with various members doing lead vocals (Carl, Al and Dennis).
Plus, they also played unreleased tracks like Lady, I've Got A Friend, Barbara and did an awesome medley of Wonderful and Don't Worry Bill.

The band deserves a live box set. Especially the 1971-1974 years, both audio and video. For example: - Central Park 1971 - Carnegie Hall 1972, both shows ( http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=7795.20, already four years ago...) - Any professionally recorded show from 1973 used for the In Concert album - Nassau 1974 + TV performances, specials, interviews etc. We need live versions of: Forever, Lady, Vegetables, It's About Time, Okie from Muskogee, Mess of Help, Here She Comes, Hold On Dear Brother, Cuddle Up, All This Is That, Big Sur, I've Got A Friend, Barbara, River Song, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Wild Honey etc. Keep on dreaming? Wild Honey live is coming out, but you missed the obvious Surf's Up and Cool Cool Water live Ah yes, you're right!

What about the live versions of Friends and Little Bird? I've heard that Dennis came to the front of the stage to sing Little Bird, but who would play the drums? (unless they changed the instrumentation for the live version)
Carl drummed (or mimed the drums) on the live Never Learn Not To Love on TV, so I'd guess him -- however, didn't Kowalski tour with the band in 1968? Would he have been on the show where they did Little Bird? Dennis came to the front to sing Friends as well, according to Eric's website. Mike was definitely there in November/December, but they didn't play Little Bird and Friends in that period. The earliest known setlist from 1968 is the Lincoln show (July 13th, 1968). Here they did play Friends and Little Bird, but the only known backup member is Ernie Small. However, my best guess is that Mike was there also (and thus would play the drums during those two songs).

Did you speed that up or is that the way you got it? The version I have of the hot mix runs 2:57, plays slower, and has the missing final verse ("Don't care to em play a tango...."). Are they both legitimate mixes or is yours a custom edit? And keeping things on topic, the version I have includes the bit where the DJ refers to it as "an exclusive preview from the Beach Boys unreleased double album." Does anyone know when that broadcast originally aired? I'm curious to know how far along the plans changed for the mix of the song and the length of the album. Yeah, I cut that extra verse and made it around 9% faster. I may have fudged with some EQ as well. Sounds ace. Wish it was in better quality, though!

PS - the version as heard on the "Landlocked" era releases is much, much better - because it is missing that hideous kick drum overdub that features prominently on KTSA. What was Johnston thinking?
The drums on KTSA are terrible in general. They sound very dry and lack 'oomph', if you know what I mean.

I will upload the River Song from the Hartford 1973 concert soon on my Youtube channel. For those who haven't heard it My copy has some strange noise, unfortunately, but it's still listenable. IIRC that show was recorded professionally for the In Concert album. So there must be a live "River song" somewhere in the vaults in perfect quality Interesting! I really hope they will release a live box set at some point. Especially the 1971-1974 years were great.

Dennis took a shot at singing "Sail On Sailor". I think it would have souinded pretty good. He shoulda stuck with it, but he ran off to the beach instead.
That's right, I forgot about that! Man, that would have been awesome!!! Denny was supposed to sing that song!!!! Sail On Sailor might be their greatest song.... which is saying a lot, sure. But damn if that song doesn't get me right now. I so absolutely love Brian's lead on 50 Live. I played the Hawthorne cd for the first time in a while last week and had forgotten about the instrumental version of Sail on Sailor. It blew me away! Listen to that track and try telling me Brian Wilson is not one of the greatest song creators in history. I only just noticed that the Hawthorne version is in a different key than the album version. I have always thought it sounded different, but now I know the answer
