Itīs pretty clear when PM was in LA with BW! I think we can trust Derek Taylor!

What am I looking at?

First meeting, circa 8/26 or 27/66, Taylor's house (Dodger Stadium show was 8/28, Candlestick Park was the next day).

Second meeting, 4/10/67, Sound Recorders studio ("Vega-Tables" session)

So if there were some kind of spy business back then this were the dates.. well done AGD! Personally donīt think that there was this kind of stuff going on.. Dates in August were to early (well maybe PM could have heard I ran, Wonderful and..well thatīs it Cheesy) and April date is far to late because Pepper was already in the can!
I rest my case Cool

Ufff...
Got to see L&M 2 days ago and Iīm still under spell from this GORGEOUS movie! There were 8 of us in the theater, mind you it was 22:15h play but that didnīt  bother me at all!
The scenes with Dano are so well done, my wife at first thought (in the opening scenes) it was Brian himself, that it was some kind of documentary. Cusack was also great, deeply touching... Banks great!
The scenes in studio were so joyfull (at least for the Pet sounds), so great to see something like this..
2 hors wnet by so fast and of course Im going to see it again, this time by myself so I can absorbe all beauty ...
And to see Brian sing L&M at the end, well what I can say tears ran down my face without control..
Since Iīm Smile freak I wish they gave us some of of the Smile studio scenes, but hey there will be DVD so we can hopefully enjoy these deleted scenes there, like these:

"Dinner party guests silverware and glass music "session", with Brian chanting over the "cacaphony"
Heroes and Villains (Brian and VDP work composing session)
Smile montage (Columbia):
a. Heroes and Villains (Brian demonstrates to group on piano)
b. Beach Boys harmonize on “Prelude”
c. Session musicians playing kazoos, toy whistles, bells and various childhood instruments
d. Brian piano theme, which “deteriorates as the take comes to an end and the notes played become random and jumbled.”

Hopefully...

But in "selected cinemas" (not theaters) on June 25? Wonder which country it's for.

All I know that in Croatia it starts on 18th and Iīm so happy īcause I thought that I wouldnīt be able to see it in a cinema!
81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: May 29, 2015, 12:02:02 AM

I gotta say, this movie looks better with every new clip that comes to public!
But since I live in Croatia, I donīt know is there hope to see it on big screen...I donīt care much for watching movies at home, I wanna see it in a cinema!!!

Nobody really considered Brian mentally ill in 1968, did they? Burnt out from 7 years of working too hard, messing with substances he shouldn't have been, yes but a far cry from the wreck he would become. So forgive Mike for not exactly putting on the kids gloves when telling Brian that the band didn't want to work on Ol' Man River any longer.

I thought Brian was briefly institutionalized right at this time, no?
That was in 1969 - OMR sessions were in summer '68.

I thought that was in summer/fall of 1968! Right after the OMR sessions.. therefore so little of Brian`s new stuff on 20/20!

To jump from topic, is it possible to get hold of Brian "Surfin Moses" picture in good resolution somewhere through web?? Or someone has it?Smiley
Would like to put it on a t-shirt, but need better resolution..
If someone can help it would be great!
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian August 1967 interview on: April 24, 2015, 03:54:19 AM
OK............?  Well maybe Nile will post up the whole quote.

Does Nile have to post the whole quote? Are you saying you never saw I Just Wasn't Made For These Times? I find that hard to believe. Regardless of whether Nile (or anybody else) posts a transcript, you've been oddly quiet on the fact that Brian's own then-wife basically said he withdrew because he was worn down by the band giving him trouble. But you for to even give an inch and admit that maybe did scale back his workload because of the rest of the group would just be beyond the pale. Not gonna happen.

I do understand that I am arguing with the guy who has such a hard-on for Mike Love that he even defended Mike when Mike was saying they would celebrate their 50th anniversary by having Justin Timberlake do "Good Vibrations" and Kenny Chesney do "Kokomo." You actually stood up for that. So I'm not surprised you won't give an inch here.

You're so adorable. When we have the quote we can discuss it.

This is kinda funny, but to satisfy your needs I will try to put a quote later today...but I think it will be close to what I said...
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian August 1967 interview on: April 23, 2015, 01:44:54 PM
Just one correction..that what she said , maybe not in those exatly word, but that was basically that..
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian August 1967 interview on: April 23, 2015, 01:43:31 PM
If Brian was just fine and dandy with being at the helm of a group that he now considered 'square' (rather than the object of his greatest aspirations), why take his name off the producer's credit when we know he still did the producing for Smiley Smile?

Couldn't it show more solidarity with the group? These interviews show he wasn't distancing himself from the group or the majority of responsibility for the group's creative output and this just as Smiley Smile is finished and about to be released and after the SMiLE period when he "didn't put out anything I don’t respect".

I'm gonna say that I don't really disagree with you on this.

However, where does this fit in...?

Letīs not forget IJWMFTT documentary where Marilyn Wilson states something like: "The guys just wore Brian down.." , and "If you think you can do better, letīs see it"..
Well we saw it..although there were some bright moments during late 60s nad early 70s...

I'm familiar but what is the whole quote?

I don't know. And I have zero interest in pulling out the DVD that has the I Just Wasn't Made For These Times documentary on it. However, Marilyn basically says that at some point (implied to probably be around the time after SMiLE) Brian basically said "you know what? You guys think you can do better? Well have at it!"

Sorry guys bur cannot find my dvd, but that is what MW said in that documentary, and it looked pretty honest, no corporate bullshit..just looked honest..
and I think that Brian maybe never said those words but I strongly feel that was his view of the whole post Smile situation, when Boys rejected his greatest work, or should I say made him give up on it..got tired of conflicts like Anderle said in that two-piece lengthy interview that can be found in Priroe LLVS.

88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian August 1967 interview on: April 21, 2015, 11:30:57 PM
The interview suggests a divide in the group that played out by 20/20 and BW not doing much for the BBs by that time period.

I read this interview this way too!

Oh, another licence I didn't like: Brian starts working on GV after PS...

I have no problem with this, īcause Brian did start "serious" work on GV after finishing PS.. I think the first version (February 1966) wasnīt very long in consideration for PS...
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Heroes and Villains stereo Cantina mix on: March 20, 2015, 01:31:04 PM
Great work, nice to have superb stereo mix of first verse and barbershop part leading to cantina..

If I could ask one question, is there posibility to get hold of stereo mix (like this yours) leading into "barbershop" part, but with "verse" music beneath it..? That would be really a treat! I think I havenīt come across something like that yet...
So please..
Tnx

92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: LOVE AND MERCY screening on: March 17, 2015, 02:52:12 AM
Caught a screening of the film today. I thought it was absolutely brilliant on so many levels. I wasn't expecting to be so emotionally moved.

A major work worthy of its subject.

Yes, there are broad strokes that only people like us will know are broad strokes -- but none of the "inaccuracies" are done for any other reason than to advance the story and get the info and emotions in -- not to misrepresent or hinder it. It's a movie  -- not a doc. Some very real sh it in this film. Jarring. Sad. Heavy.

I've always made fun of biopics (with the ridiculously pristine Dodge Darts, rock bands from 1962 playing their guitars down by their crotches, and people in 1967 looking like Artimus Pyle), but this was pretty stirring and unforgettable.

Without question -- the best case scenario.

Did these scenes make it into final cut?

"Dinner party guests silverware and glass music "session", with Brian chanting over the "cacaphony"
Surf’s Up (Inside Pop) with Bernstein VO
Heroes and Villains (Brian and VDP work composing session)
“Fire” sessions (Gold Star)
Smile montage (Columbia):
a. Heroes and Villains (Brian demonstrates to group on piano)
b. Beach Boys harmonize on “Prelude”
c. Session musicians playing kazoos, toy whistles, bells and various childhood instruments
d. Brian piano theme, which “deteriorates as the take comes to an end and the notes played become random and jumbled.”
Brian sings Plymouth Rock chant in swimming pool
The final chord of Day in the Life (Beatles) and phonograph needle lifts" ??

Tnx in advance

93  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Finding Specific SMiLE Fan Mixes on: March 12, 2015, 12:22:24 AM
I need to throw in a shout-out for the DJ Mic Luv mix of SMiLE--one of the most creative and different mixes I've ever heard. Very entertaining, and very playable for pure enjoyment (as opposed to "academic study"--though that's enjoyable too, just in a different way.)

I, too, have some unique SMiLE mixes I did over 10 years ago, though there have been too many wonderful edits since, especially as digital tools have improved. (I've got a stereo "Worms" I pieced together entirely from scratch; a "Wind Chimes" that combines the xylo/celesta versions together, along with bits of the Smiley version; a Barnyard suite that includes the pizzicato rehearsal; and a strange medley called "Wonderful to say Mama/Love to say Dada/Child is Father to the Man" which is more of a "conception" track rather than a "concept"! Better than my [admittedly primitive for the time] mixes, is the imitation Capitol 16-page CD booklet I did for the album, complete with fake Brian liner notes, a la the two-fer series.) Let me know if you're interested, and I'll see what I can do...

All I can  say is WONDERFUL! Please..

95  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love & Mercy - Berlinale premiere on: February 11, 2015, 05:13:30 AM
My 2 cents on the film and its European premiere at the Berlinale..

As far as I see it, BW fans can put their minds at ease - Love & Mercy is a very good film. And I say 'BW fans' because this is a film about Brian. Brian & Melinda.
The BBs are featured in a sizable capacity but the focus is very rarely (if ever..) on the band itself. Love & Mercy is as far removed from being a BBs band biopic as it can be. But this much should have been clear from the get-go.
That being said, I think it fairly and accurately portrays the other BBs - especially Mike, who naturally plays a key role in certain moments of Brian Dano's young life. Mike is never vilified but depicted as a commercially-thinking rational individual - an aspect of Brian's ultimate breakdown, sure, but only one of many.
Typing 'Brian Dano' wasn't an accident. Paul Dano is brilliant as young BW, by the 2nd or 3rd scene into the movie he's disappeared into the role. No wonder the real deal was scared (do you remember that "Mr Wilson..." movie theatre anecdote?). Cusack doesn't make it as easy on the audience as Dano does, but in a way he has the even tougher job. And I completely understand people who, before seeing the film, can't picture Cusack 'working' as BW. But let me tell you: he does well. And it's clear throughout that Cusack's heart was in this project. It's an apposite character study of a man who, by the time the 80s got around, was a very complex adult indivual. I was impressed and relieved by Cusack's performance.

What follows are a couple of random thoughts, still spoiler-free. I don't want to spoil anything. If you have specific questions though, ask away. Smiley I'll try and clearly mark the spoilers in future posts.

  • Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti are fine
  • Dennis doesn't look handsome enough - by far (no direspect to the actor, who does a good job Grin )
  • VDP was cast well but didn't have many scenes
  • Murry's character was remarkably toned down, but worked in the specific context of the film
  • the film's soundscape is a trip on its own - both vintage and new recordings melting in a potpourri presence of bizarrely beautiful and sometimes scary ambience
  • the unchronological planes-of-reality-jumping narrative structure may prove a bit demanding for the uninitiated, but aptly captures Brian's spirit
  • it is a tremendously ambitious film and not your "run-of-the-mill biopic", as Melinda put it - and it meets most of its ambitions
  • personal highlights include all the Wrecking Crew scenes (FIRE!!), the later scenes with Banks and Cusack, the conceptual soundtrack, the imaginative editing and the mise-en-scčne of classic Brianism material (from both Dano and Cusack)
  • Brian & Melinda were received enthusiastically by the premiere audience, receiving a number of standing ovations before and after the screening

Oh, and I finally got my LOVE YOU signed. Grin  Thanks again Melinda, if you should happen to read this.

Lowbaca, what are the Smile scenes shown in a movie?? H&V? Fire? SU?...
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vintage Brian Wilson Smile-era edits/mixes? on: February 11, 2015, 01:50:25 AM
Isn't it a bit weird that, of all the songs created by Brian Wilson during the Smile era, 10 songs out of the 12 in the proposed December track list had partially made mixes (Heroes, Worms, Barnyard and The Old Master Painter, Cabin Essence, Wonderful, Child Is Father Of The Man, Surf's Up demo, Vegetables, Wind Chimes, The Elements: Fire), plus two unknown listed tracks that could have been opening at closing of the album (Prayer and You're Welcome). Good Vibrations was already in the can and Im' In Great Shape is still the big mystery! Call me crazy, but im' beginning to think that the 12 tracks memo make sense.

Of course it makes sense! I think there is no doubt that these were the songs that were going to be on that album, but the question is in what form for some of the songs..Do you like worms, Prayer, Wind chimes, Cabinessence..I think that these four were complete (maybe some vocals needed..), others were in some kind of flux in November/December when the list was created..
Having said that, I remeber the famous Vosse qoute that "while the boys were in England, it was totaly concieved entity".. or something like that, so I have to say that the album had shape in October/November when Brian was doing tracks, but when the time came to lay vocals it was begging to fall apart + VDP leaving...sections moved, concentrating on singles..yea I think Smile had it come out in January/February 1967 would have been a lot different from letīs say October/November 1966 Smile! I think it was already in the dumpster (the original idea) in January/February 1967!

Great job, Jason!

I really like the way you made some changes with restricted "66 stuff", and the way you tied it up!

I wouldīnt agree with Mujan that it doesnīt work, for me it does work, and this line up is quite nice, as is is every other line up as well!
Sonicī did something similar, I mean in terms of "official" line up from that December ī66 list, with few more deatils added.

I really dig your Heroes mix, and is quite breathtaking, and maybe just what Brian wanted in that magic burst of enery in October/November of 1966!
3 minute musical comedy! Of course, it would have been floop in charts  Cheesy just my opinion..but very Zapp-ish!

Wasn't there also the mix of the Heroes and Villains vocal chants from Gee to Slow Dit-Dit with Swedish Frog spliced out? I thought this was supposed to be the final mix of H&V Part 2.

It can be found on TSS-Heroes mix, somewhere at the end of box set (forgot where..), and in a SOT, vol 17., cd 1, track 10! That one I found!
