26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The initial structure of Heroes and Villains on: July 21, 2016, 11:39:14 PM

and if I remember rightly:

'great shape' is a heavier arrangement we haven't heard yet

'my children' has the 'often wise' melody

i wonder if 'great shape' has a similar feel to the very early takes of 'false barnyard' before the ychanged the rhythm..?
[/quote]

Mike, I think you might be right about that.  Sorry guys, but I believe that this is some kind of mix that includes early "false barnyard" with june '67 "my children.."

To support my claim if I'm not mistaken the guy who heard the acetate said there was bicycle rider part with kick drum that he never heard before and we all know about that part (SOT...), and DYDW with different voals whick have also been discussed on board here (Vigotone bootleg)....

But who knows, I would love to be proven wrong! Shocked
27  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is your Smile Track Listing? on: July 16, 2016, 03:16:19 AM
I just listened to some vintage Brian mix's, and lined up Vegetables (october '66 mix) and Old master painter (presumably November '66 mix), and was surprised how two of them work good together side by side. Listen to this VT mix with that "old cowboy piano" feel and OMP with also C&W feeling!
And let's not forget that these two were last two songs on Smile tracklist!
This Smile is really incredable, so many possible variations!

[from 'Humble Harv':] Verse - I've been in this town so long/Verse - Once at night, Cotillion squared the fight/Flutter-horn transition/IIGS - Fresh Clean-Zen Air/[from DP acetate:] My children were born, they suddenly rise/Verse - At three score and five/[from 'Humble Harv', ‘here’s another section now’:] Barnyard.

The problem is that the My Children section wasn't recorded until 1/27/67.

True, but that goes only for the Cantina mix that survives. The lyric "My children.. 3 score&5 ...survive with the H&V" could have existed before, and just be sung over the verse track, as it's really a third verse lyrically/metrically/melodically.
[/quote]

Micha, you genius! This is probably true! "My children..! part was probably at some point (maybe October/November '66) verse!
It fits perfectly, try singin' it over the verse instrumental!
[/quote]

The Durrie Parks acetate, presumably from December, has the "My children were raised . . . often wise" instrumental backing in it after the new Great Shape section.  Not a verse backing repeat.
[/quote]

BR, you're right but what Micha and me were talking about was that at some point "..my children.." part was to be sung over verse instrumental, and from there to "..3 score..."
Wonderful stuff this H&V! Smiley
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The initial structure of Heroes and Villains on: June 27, 2016, 04:21:29 AM
The second iteration is written by Brian and Van Dyke Parks, beginning sometime in May (and possibly completed, in compositional terms, that same month). By October 1966, at the latest, it includes sections entitled ‘I’m in Great Shape’ and ‘Barnyard’. Combining the ‘Humble Harv’ demo of November 4th ('Miller is excited: “That is going to be the greatest record anybody's ever heard"' - Teen Set) and the the ‘Durrie Parks’ assembly of three sections of the song, we have a possible sequence for [some of] this version as follows:

[from 'Humble Harv':] Verse - I've been in this town so long/Verse - Once at night, Cotillion squared the fight/Flutter-horn transition/IIGS - Fresh Clean-Zen Air/[from DP acetate:] My children were born, they suddenly rise/Verse - At three score and five/[from 'Humble Harv', ‘here’s another section now’:] Barnyard.

Thank you very much! Currently working on a version of Dumb Angel, a pre-January 1967 version of SMiLE. And so, nothing recorded in 1967 will appear on the album. I've kinda run into a problem though. Apparently there was a session on April 10th, 1967 for Child is Father of the Man. Anybody know exactly what was added during that session? Gotta figure that out to determine whether to use the first or second version of the track. Also holding off on the video until the new mix of Good Vibrations with the partial vocals pops up online!

In April's session for CIFOTM they recorded short piano piece that they use as an intro for CIFOTM in Smile Sessions album version.
GV popped up!
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds 50 track listing on: June 11, 2016, 12:23:23 AM
So the big questions I have to ask is for those bought the Super Deluxe Set. 1st are the session highlights extended at all or are the same ones from the 97 boxset? 2nd is the Good Vibrations track with partial vocal worth hearing?

2) Oh god yes. The Good Vibrations (Master Take with Partial Vocal) is probably the stand-out track on the set. There's even a hidden surprise at the end for the die-hard of the die-hards...  Cool

Can someone please post this GV track, so we can see is this the one that was used in L&M movie during the GV scenes??
Also I seem to remember that this track was already (if it really is one with partial Carl vocal) released in some bootleg, I think Undecided
Maybe someone can clarify??

Unfortunately Rab has left the board and he left behind an awesome Love mix. Well, I thought it was too short so I added some more to it and even removed some stuff that I didn't like. Here is my take on his Beach Boys Love Mix. I'm also working on an Alternate Today! album mix. I'll try to upload this to Youtube and Vimeo.

Vimeo:
https://vimeo.com/163175382

Tracklist:
1. I’m Waiting For Our Prayer (Intro)
2. Heroes and Villains
3. Fun, Fun, Fun
4. You Still Believe In Me (Vitamin String Quartet and Brian vocal)
4. I Just Wasn’t Wonderful
5. Brian’s Magic Transistor Radio
6. Til I Die
7. I Get Around
8. Then I Kissed Rhonda on a Honda
9. Wouldn’t It Be Worms
10. Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine/Love To Say Da Da
11. Starchild
12. Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again
13. Good Vibrations (Outro)

Is it possible to get these mix with songs separated??

I think we had enough of this!
Let's get back to Rocky topic Grin
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile- My final mix on: March 15, 2016, 01:44:26 AM
I must say you're did one more great mix, but for me your previous mix (November mix, I think??) was better, more tight and accurate representation of Smile could have been in 1966/1967!
Nevertheless, good job!
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 28, 2016, 01:15:42 PM
Well than that's settled. Thank you guys for your great insights on the "authenticity" of this supposed acetate!

Still it was great to reduscover this DYLW mix. I had this boot for about 10 years and never noticed that that BW isn't one doing lead vocal in this chant. Great thing on this guy's vimeo site is CFTM stereo vocals mix. I was under impression that those couldn't be achieved..wouldn't it be nice to find those vocals multitrack Smiley
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 25, 2016, 06:21:22 AM
Just listened back to back Vigotone bootleg (track 24) and this "acetate".
Sounds same, at least to me! Maybe I have wrong ears!  Grin

I agree with Nile, sounds the same to me.

Great bootleg though, some bits on there have never appeared elsewhere. Like the Good Vibrations rough mix with some scatters of the vocals from the final version.

I agree with you so therefore I agree with myself!  Grin

Just to get back to acetate "Test", love the way "Bridge to indians" flows into DYLW. Seltaeb did exactly same thing in his Smile A.D. mix! Really smooth!
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 25, 2016, 05:12:44 AM
I'm away from my desktop and my boots, and the conversation has me slightly lost without being able to refer the sound files being discussed. However, just want to be sure that nothing being discussed here is unknowingly referring to the Ant Bee track that was slipped on to the Vigotone boot is it?

Nope! That's track 25 on Vigotone boot!
41  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 25, 2016, 03:51:22 AM
Nope Tom, this one! Listen how when it gets to the Hawaiian part it becomes Double Tracked, never heard that before.

https://vimeo.com/153445491

I might be wrong of course, but when I first heard that "double tracking" my first thought was the guy who posted this had overdubbed his own voice onto it. Or anybody else, but to me it doesn't sound like one of the boys' voices.
like
It means that someone who assembled Vigotone boot messed around with acetates! Don't think so.. To me it really sounds like Carl/Dennis...
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 23, 2016, 11:14:59 PM
And of course would love that some of the mixing wizards on this board takes a crack at BR with kick drum, in GLORIOUS STEREO!  Grin

But would love to know is this mix is something that was reffered in that Durrie topic ("...There is also a completely new/original keenywokapula vocal take on one of the DYLWs with a different mix. Not mindblowingly new, but mindblowingly great to listen to..."")
And of course IMGS-HV mix!
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Artowork for My Mix on: February 21, 2016, 11:28:05 AM
Hey guys
Any chance that someone tries doin Smile artwok but instead of "smile" that it says "dumb angel"?
Would really appreciate that Smiley
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 19, 2016, 12:05:15 AM
I just listened to the "DYLW 2" video, and I'm perplexed. The "Hawaiian chant" doesn't sound like Brian at all to me. More like Dennis with a cold. You can also hear the pedal steel part in the background.

Right, that's not Brian! Listened to the Smile Vigotone 110 Smile boot and indeed there's this mix with Dennis? vocal...
Also on the same boot there's this BR/HV 1st verse acetate!
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DYLW was part of Heroes on: February 18, 2016, 03:53:39 AM
Shocked

So of the five that you have up there, are all of them actual acetates, or are some of them reconstructions of what might have been?  Certainly interesting, to say the least.

I was just about to ask the same thing myself.

Edit 1: Is...is Brian's vocal doubled on the Worms bridge? I've never heard that before.

Yeah, wow. Sounds like Carl. Definitely never heard that one before.

You're right, that's definitely not Brian. Sounds like Dennis to my ears though.

There's definitely some acetate material here but I think it's mixed with fan edits.

I can't hear anything that hasn't been heard before... Huh
Anyway, I agree with qoute, that there's  some acetate material but mixed together (BR-HV verse)..
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson's Secret Bedroom Tapes - LA Weekly 1-30-14 on: February 11, 2016, 06:17:48 AM
COMMENT:

Enough is enough.  The LA Weekly rag article is pure fantasy.

1)  There was no recording equipment in Brian's Bellagio Bedroom. I have been in that bedroom hundreds of times. I have sat on the bed and talked with Brian many times. I have helped Marilyn put Brian into that bed when he was in a stupor from drugs.

2)  I stayed in the adjacent bedroom to Brian's bedroom many times when sessions ran late. I am very familiar with that wing of the house. There were no tape recorders, microphones, or such equipment upstairs. Only a portable cassette recorder on the bed stand that Brian used to listen to the radio once in a while.

3)  The equipment in the living room was for playback only. I know because I installed the system.

4)  It was all anyone could do to get Brian to record downstairs in his 16-track studio. There was no secret recording room or recording done somewhere else.

5)  Even the illustration showing Brian surrounded by microphones is bogus. Add at least 350 pounds to the Brian-figure to be accurate. If you were going on conjecture you might assume that Brian, being a drug-crazed musician, was thin and physically demented, but this only underscores the inaccuracy of the article and the pipe dream this article really is. I wonder what was in the author's pipe to dream up such an accounting?

6)  Any recording Brian or anyone under contract was the property of Warner's or Capitol. There are no secret tapes. This is a business, the recording business. It is big business with lots of money involved, legal obligations, and a team of people to pull it off.

You all can continue to conjecture about this topic if you wish, but it is all only an exercise in imagination.

That's my take,  ~Stephen W. Desper

I read this article multiple times 'cause it's very intriguing but never, not once, understood it the way that these are really "tapes from bedroom", and I think it's clearly stated that way in the article! It was just a period when BW..well he just gave up on being the "hot shot" recording producer and just chilled back...
And that's the reason I find these songs so appealing...
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: my Heroes and Villains rough mix number 1 on: February 10, 2016, 05:30:10 AM
ok this is a rough pass at a 'late '66' version - it uses the BR part as the chorus which I'm imagining it would have shared with 'Worms'

there's no attempt to level it up or really tidy it, its an initial exercise in trying to make a flowing song out of the bits

for the 2nd BR repeat I'd prob add the 'ribbon of concrete' lyrics

the modularness is what makes this task so difficult - if I 'cheat' and use the 'iron horse' chorus as a kind of bridge it sounds fantastic and its properly arranged to segue

I could extend this by using more 'Smiley' stuff but I want to keep that to a minimum

01 Heroes

Great stuff Mike! I especially love the transition between second BR chorus and Barnyard!
Never was a big fan of Barnyard section but with only background vocals and all those "animals" really makes decent fade..
I think I'll use it that way in my mix!
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was there any evidence \ on: February 09, 2016, 01:31:57 AM
We need to ask anyone we can what happened in the second half of 1967. In many ways, it's more of a mystery then Smile.

Maybe some  answers on what was happening with BW in summer of 1967 can be found in this "must read" article by D. Dalton. But on the other hand maybe it's just a big put on by BW, but..remember the scene in the pool in "Love and Mercy"?
Unfortunately, this is not an entire article, but if I recall correctly it's pretty close.. Maybe someone can put out entire article!

my favorite version but always seems a bit empty after a lot of the other very densely arranged songs

I've done a very rough partial test to fill it out a bit

needs loads of refining but I think it could work quite well

Could you put it up again??
Did you manage to finish those HV's??
