101  Smiley Smile Stuff / BRIAN WILSON Q & A / Love you and Adult child demos on: January 25, 2015, 11:42:04 PM
Hi Brian!

So glad that you are here with us!

Question: Are there any plans on releasing "Love you/Adult child" demos? These are among my favorites...great stuff!

Looking forward to movie, bio and of course new album!

Cheers

Niksa

From the SS/WH twofer notes:
A version of this was recorded on 1/27/67, the same day as the "Cantina" section of "Heroes and Villains".  It is possible that at one point, "Whistle In" was part of "Heroes and Villains".

Ipso facto.....

IT IS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Plus, nothing like this has ever been booted or put on the Smile Sessions box, so hrrrm. :\

Above all else, I guess I meant more that "Whistle In" wasn't derived from anything we'd heard.

I thin that SS/WH notes indicate that "Whistle in" has origin in Smileīs "Whistling bridge", perhaps even in "All day"?? For this second  just lyrically, but "Whistlin bridge" is certainly origin of SS Whistle in.
Just my opinion.

No, "Whistling Bridge" has been released and isn't "Whistle In". The Twofer (which means this is 15+ year old speculation) only says "it's possible" that "Whistle In" was a "Heroes" section, but nothing like this has been booted or released on the Smile box set, so I'm not sure.

I know "Whistling bridge" isnīt "Whistle in" , but SSWH notes say that "version" of "Whistle in" was recorded on 27th January 1967, and therefore Iīm convinced that this "version" is "Whistlin bridge".
But letīs remember that "Bedroom tapes", if we can call them that way, started with "Whiste in"! Hereīs qoute:
""Whistle In" (alternate versions) - Alternately, one could argue that a number of spirited takes of "Whistle In," from summer '67, are characteristic of the way Wilson attached himself to a basic riff and noodled with it endlessly during the 'Bedroom' years. "

Some very nice things..like the way you put together Iīm in great shape, really interesting..
I like the way you sequenced songs, they flow really well..
Tnx for the mix..gave me some ideas I will try myself in my mix..
105  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE - Re-assembled on: December 21, 2014, 11:32:09 PM
Been thinking about doing a SMiLE mix like this for a while; all of the pieces of SMiLE fit together in so many interesting ways, and what with Brian adding so many interludes and separate parts, I created a mix of SMiLE that separates each song into separate pieces and intersperses them together, creating an entirely new experience. I know this mix isn't perfect, but I hope this idea inspires someone else to create a possibly-better interpretation of this idea. Special thanks to SMiLE: Reflections for inspiration for the opening, and to Soniclovenoize and JMZ for their amazing SMiLE mixes which I borrowed from. Hope you enjoy!

Some nice things..but Iīm more a straight 12-13 songs album kind of guy.. If you just put songs in a certain kind of way you could also have "suite" album.. any way thatīs my opinion..nice job indeed..maybe some other posters like master - Selt can have a go with more success with this kind of approach..

Tnx guys.I will look what other threads say..but something doesnt add up with this studio movie and photos from fire session..so definetely other date in question! Interesting that supposedly Dennis bought Brian some fire hats in London.I think I read that in Mojo 2002 Smile article.soo yet another mystery.I just cant belueve how many are there in Smile story.so much confusion...
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The fire hats on: November 08, 2014, 05:01:57 AM
I would like to know, your majesty AGD Cheesy, what were dates of these two films.I remember reading somewhere that the fire station scenes were filmed in october 1966 before the boys went for England?? Further more did the scenes in studio filmed the same day and for what song, since it is clear they are workin on a song..and even Van Dyke Parks is there!! So it seems it s not MOCW session, since VDP did not attend that one! Or am I simply mistaken??
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: seltaeb1012002's Stereo Remixes Thread (update: Wouldn't It Be Nice) on: November 03, 2014, 06:20:31 AM
I love your mix of My Solution, seltaeb1012002! Thank you very much for posting it.  Smiley I know this is a long shot, but do you think you could do anything to bring Brian's vocal on the "Oh Lord" demo?

OOO I said same some time ago..maybe the Master is already workin on this!
109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 17-minute \ on: October 28, 2014, 07:50:24 AM
I made an 18:30 minute version back in the Smile Shop days of yore.
The link? Would love to hear it & compare w/ TheLazenby's & sonic's.

Here it is with a fresh coat of Old Paint. I tweaked it to update it in places:

Hope you city slickers like it.

Voow this is truly great Krab! I really like the way you handled barnyard demo with all the farm sounds and fiddles beneath (from barnshine??)..made me think that after that section HV intro or even MOCW would go great.. really good contrast between laidback  then furious hectic...
think Iīll made me a mix like that!
Tnx for an idea!
One more question: are we gonna get some mp3/wav of your smile videos??
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smiley Smile done right? on: October 16, 2014, 12:06:57 AM
I've just been kicking around an idea, since I was disappointed with the results of Priore's SMiLE... what would it sound like if one put together a 'proper' version of Smiley Smile?  Well, take a look at the track list, you'll see what I mean:

SIDE ONE
01) Heroes and Villains - 'Smile Sessions' version, spliced to single version (so that the last chorus fades)
02) Vegetables - 'Smile Sessions' version without opening segue
03) Mrs. O'Leary's Cow - 'Smile Sessions' version
04) He Gives Speeches - obviously standing in for "She's Goin' Bald", it's short but it fits.
05) I Love To Say Da Da - since there isn't a Smile equivalent of "Little Pad", this seems to be the best fit, complete with Water Chant at the start.

SIDE TWO
01) Good Vibrations - 'Smile Sessions' version with hum-de-dums.
02) With Me Tonight - 'Smile Sessions' version??  Doesn't that one end rather abruptly when someone knocks something over, though?
03) Wind Chimes - 'Smile Sessions' version without opening segue
04) ...................no clue.  I need to fill the spot left by "Gettin' Hungry".
05) Wonderful - 'Smile Sessions' version
06) You're Welcome - Seems like a reasonable replacement for "Whistle In", another round chant.

You know... this is, like, Smile, not Smiley smile??!!
Ok, fill in CE and Su and thatīs it!
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BW - Airplane Demo Excerpt (High Quality) on: September 04, 2014, 07:26:21 AM
I myself just canīt believe that all these superb demos are in in their original form so crappy, full of hiss and everything...

I mean, if we look at Smile Sessions and CIFOTM choruses we had up to 2011 release, they were little bit better than Love you/Adult child demos but still in very low fidelity, bad shape letīs say...then in TSS they finally proved in very good shape and it seemed that it was down to bootlegers why they were so crappy...

Maybe Iīm just over optimistic but I believe that the if LY/AC demos  were to be presented to us in official form that they would prove to be in very good shape and very enjoyable to listen ..not that I mind them in these form I JUST LOVE THEM! Grin

Come on Briī release them!

Think I will start my Smile mix like you did with this yours...great intro before Gee. Yep thatīs first song in my mix!
Tnx for an idea..
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you prefer SMiLE as a 3 movements piece or as 12-14 tracks? on: August 11, 2014, 02:14:14 AM
Clearly the only correct answer here is 12 separate 3-part movements

I think youīre right! 12 songs, each made of 3 movements! Cheesy
This is getting to silly as would Graham Chapman say!
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I need SMiLE experts to help answering mixing questions. on: July 28, 2014, 07:06:29 AM
Hi again.
I arrived (I wouldn't say safely) to the Old Master Painter/My Only Sunshine part of the album. So far I'm pretty happy with the results. The only real dificulty yet has been the "Mohale lule mohale lula" part on DYLW. I don't know why, but even with all the different tracks I have, there was no way I could make it sound right in stereo. The stereo backing track exists, but unless you use a vocal removal plugin, you can't get rid of that annoying slide guitar that's so badly out of tune and keep the whole track stereo. You can do phase inversion but you're left with a mono backing track at the end, so...I also tried to keep the backing track mono and to add stereo backing vocals, but somehow they won't synch. Plus I also have Mike's lead vocals alone, but they're dry, no reverb, and I don't want to add digital reverb at all. It's not really a problem to have some mono snippets in my version, but since I'm so close to the real deal here...

Now can somebody finally tell me what is wrong with "My only sunshine", from where Dennis starts to sing? Why won't it synch with the backing track on disc 3 track 6 of TSS box set? I don't know what trick they used or if the vocals were mixed on the spot with a lost/unknown take, later mixed with the Old Master Painter (we have the good take on this one though), or what...on thing is clear, when the violins start to play along the Dennis' vocals, they clearly play at the same tempo, they start slowly during the "you are my" part. But on TSS d3 T6 the violins come rushing, which means they either used another take, or used some king of time stretching device, but I would say it's the first suggestion since the rest of the take can't be synched either...And, well, the sax solo is completely different...Where is that take?!

Feel free to comment or to add any suggestion. I've yet to hear a proper stereo version of this track...

Donīt know anything about the subject but.. I didnīt know Mike sang lead on DYDW?hmmmmm..... Am I hearing wrong but I hear Brian singin lead?

116  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you prefer SMiLE as a 3 movements piece or as 12-14 tracks? on: July 20, 2014, 12:32:41 AM
10 Tracks w/ a bunch of add-ins

1.) Heroes & Villains
Bag of Tricks Intro  (revised edit)
H&V Part 1 (sln 1967 mix)
IIGS (revised edit)
Barnyard
DYLW?
H&V Part 2 (MiC)
H&V Outro
2.) OMP
3.) Cabinessence
4.) Vege-Tables
5.) Wind Chimes (smiley smile[personal preference])
Workshop ("just tools" edit)
"Psychedelic Sounds: Moaning-Laughing" (revised edit)
6.) Fire
Fire Outro
7.) Water Chant
8.) Wonderful
Love To Say Dada ("just dada" edit)
9.) CIFOTM
George Fell.. ("just horns" edit)
10.) Surf's Up

Damn I just thought of something - anyone ever considered mixing "Our Prayer" and "Bag of Tricks"(alleged H&V Intro) together? I would, but lack the skills. I imagine it would be equal parts demented & divine.

Now thatīs what I call a dare move, a dare mix.. This is something Iīd love to hear...
Some ideas will surely incorporate in my mix, thatīs also cookinī up for some time now..
Mixing Prayer and bag of tricks would be something truly bizzare and great.. Think we should call up to the rescue the master Selt!
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you prefer SMiLE as a 3 movements piece or as 12-14 tracks? on: July 07, 2014, 06:49:53 AM
My favorite Smile sequence:

(all from Smile Sessions, except where noted)

1. Our Prayer
2. Heroes and Villains (Smiley)
3. Cabin Essence
4. Wind Chimes (Good Vibes Box Set)
5. The Elements: Fire
6. Good Vibrations (Smiley)
7. Wonderful
8. Do You Like Worms?
9. Vega-Tables
10. Surf's Up
11. You're Welcome

Great.. thatīs what I like. One little album with "songs of an american dream" in itīs purest..
The more I look at this list the better transition between VT to SU looks..
Having said that in my mix i have to have Holidays and CIFOTM..Love those...

Sure hope that these Parks acetates provide us smoe new stuff..also would love to hear more BW 66 mixes in decent shape...

But to get to the TOPIC, I prefer an album with songs , not suites... Brian never did those nad Iīm certain if an album did get finished in 1966/1967 it would be in line with a handwritten list..some americana some elements songs (for instance DYDW - WC)..not restricted to side A americana side B elements..

Also I wonder where SU belongs? It could certainly be a part of an americana theme, but also elements theme..I wonder...

What makes you so sure of an "elements side/theme" in the first place?

In case of Smile there is absolutely no certainty!  Grin
So, therefore neither can I be certain..I just feel there is some unified theme amongst some songs..but to make myself clear I didnīt write Smile and cerainly I am not BW so my opinioN doesnīt count   Cheesy
Just wanted to say that these songs somehow go together..if I made myself clear...
For me THE SONGS not suites is the way to go, just so justice can be done to each song itself!
To qoute Mikie: "it was just 12 beautiful tracks with lives of their own. A bunch of songs about a musical journey across America from East to West; about modern American history and culture, including the Wild West. .."
THATīS RIGHT..

I also saw foxtrot post this on the Flaming Lips board, liked what I heard and I urged foxtrot to post it here.  He never did though, I'm glad some people found it.

Heard the first 30 seconds.

Why these morons feel the need to take other peoples music, stick their stupid, shitty drums over the top, then sit back and imagine they're in some way creative or talented is beyond me

The perpetrator should be publicly beheaded. I'd happily bring the sandwiches.

Let me ask you this: do you think it takes no talent to create visual collage art?  A collage artists is "sampling" other works, isn't he?  Or we can take a literary example...  is TS Elliott's The Wasteland without artistic merit because he has essentially "sampled" elements of other literary works?

There are a finite amount of chords to be played on a piano or guitar...  Do we criticize Brian Wilson or whomever by saying "Why these morons take a D chord and an F#m chord  stick their stupid, shitty drums over the top, then sit back and imagine they're in some way creative or talented is beyond me"

We don't.  You have to remember foxtrot and other electronic artists are using samples as instruments themselves.

Not a huge fan of collages no. I think it's lazy.

I'm no literary expert, but didn't TS Eliot take small lines from other writers and use them to comment on a wider picture?

In that context I have nothing against someone taking a small  musical sample and using it to augment a work that contains mostly original work.

And I'm a great admirer of what you've done with your Smile mixes, in most cases.

As for the old 'there's nothing original left to do in music' argument, this is an apologist argument, usually from people who can recognise great art but are unable to create it. Unfortunately we are living through creatively stifled times, where originality is not valued. We are living through a time where 'anyone can have a go' and 'all creativity is valid'. Its like when parents praise their child for every single thing they do. Just one bunch of idiots clapping another bunch of idiots for being able to wipe their arses

Using 100% someone else's work and just adding a drum loop (itself unoriginal) is lazy and uncreative. Anyone could do it.  Let him prove me wrong. Lets hear some original work from him.

Admittedly I was being somewhat flippant in my initial post, but the sentiment is real. It annoys me to see comments like "This is what Smile could have been" Dear God!!!

To me, one of the most original things about Brian Wilson is that he doesn't rely on drums. The percussion is sparing, and for effect. He uses it like a good chef uses  salt and pepper. To hear his work being cheapened in such a way, Well I find it offensive and I'll damn well say so.

I am a snob, and proud of it.

If he reads this then he can feel free to criticise my work. As my work is 100% original, and I invest a lot of time and thought in creating it though, any criticism from him will carry zero weight with me. As harsh as it sounds, if he can't stand criticism, he should keep his 'efforts' private. I'm fully within my rights to criticise someone for lazily stealing someone else's (much respected) music, and sticking house music drums over the top of it.

If this was just existing Beach Boys songs with drums layered over the top, you might have a point. However this guy is selecting specific sections of Smile songs, looping them to create new rhythms that weren't in the original music, isolating sounds, reversing them, layering samples from one smile song over another. The hip hop drums are a small part of the process so I think it's disingenuous to suggest that that's all that he's doing and that the work is lazy. And after all, it's just a mix! The whole point is that existing music is restructured to create something new as opposed to writing one's own new music. Something tells me, if he were to remove the drums you'd be much less negative about it.

Right on brother!:)
I feel need to explain what I said about "this is how smile should have went". of course that I didnīt meant that BW should have used drums/repetitive forms in 1966 with his Smile, but what struck me in this mix is free flow , mixing parts of song in a beautiful way! Listen for example Barnyard with pig stuff in the middle.. This is how smile could have went somewhere in november 1966! At least for me..

123  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Child is father ...... on: April 29, 2014, 12:24:07 AM
The intro bit (first 24 secs) feels tacked-on, I think it was put there so the very start of the song wouldn't be so similar to the very start of "Look" but it hurts the flow IMHO
The more I hear it, the more I agree with that. It's a cool little section, but doesn't jive at all with the sounds he was using for that track in '66. I've always started my "Child" mixes with the chorus - it starts the song off quickly and hooks you in right away!
Aw. I loved the intro.

Has anybody tried putting those intro vocals over the quiet piano bit (the bit put at the end of CIFOTM in BWPS)? They need a bit of speed changing and chopping, but the effect (including the lumpy piano on the vocal track) works disturbingly well, making that piano bit spine tingling, and is of the right length. I would guess that something like this was originally intended.

Either way, I've put the piano section (with those vocals) at the beginning of the track, then chorus, then quiet guitar bit, then chorus 2, then that funny vibes bridge, then the shimmery strings fade out.

Krabklaw did something like that with his Smyle mix! Very good indeed and ..fits perfectly with that lonesome piano and trumpet..

What I'd like to know is what the title of "the album" was at the time of that session. To me, "Prayer" is the perfect opener to an album called "Dumb Angel", but a terrible opener for an album called "SMiLE".
[/quote]

Good point! Wow - wouldn't Dumb Angel have been a cool album title?

I always thought that Dumb angel would be more acurate title for this album, very cool indeed and very catchy to ear!
Next time I do my smile mix Iīm naminī it "Dumb angel"! Grin
