1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Iain Lee's Opinion Of This Forum: \ on: September 02, 2016, 01:35:53 AM
I haven't read the whole thread but I see the phrase "death threats" is being loosely tossed about.

Being a fan of the Richard Herring podcast, I heard this episode when it first appeared , and thought nothing of it. It's a humorous discussion. RH asks often outrageous or ridiculous questions and sometimes unexpectedly interesting answers are elicited. In this case the question was, who would you kill if you could be certain of getting away with it? Now, a boring answer would be "no one" or some terrorist leader. Instead, (having just come from being tarred and feathered on this message board), he vented a little with this hyperbolic answer. I found it funny. It was obvious hyperbole. I didn't take it personally, because I knew he wasn't talking about me. It was almost flattering we were worthy of mention. And of course the audience found it hilarious he (or anyone) was ever on a Beach Boys message board in the first place.

And now suddenly this is worthy of it's own post? In the ON-TOPIC section? And just when things looked they had calmed down a bit and peace reigned again?

Please delete my account. I'm as against that ridiculous Mike Love character as the next guy but that doesn't mean I can't agree to disagree with people who defend him.

Yes, I am a member of the Pet Sounds board, yes, there are a few bad apples there too. But at least you can block/ignore them there, which function would have come in very handy on this board.

I irrationally hate this one: " Grin "
it makes me want to punch whoever uses it.
Excuse me while I punch myself.

a few posts ago mention was made of a mono mixed version of ADUFS with added hand-claps that aren't present on the stereo mix made by Mark Linnett for the two-fer bonus track, where the song debuted

A "few posts" ago, but nonetheless ten years ago, before either the singles collection or Made in California.

Though I voted in round one, I think I'm going to sit a few rounds out now. I don't know this album so well as others and there's a whole lot of tracks I have no great love for, but don't hate either. It's only when we get down to to the final six or so I think I'll feel particularly strongly.

I tried a snail once from a friend's dish at a French restaurant. It just tasted of the garlic it had been cooked in to me. I'll just have garlic next time.

Here's an old album of mine (very lo-fi) https://iancockburnandthewholeworld.bandcamp.com/

Lo-fi's the word! It took until "Bop Bop Shu Wap" for it to take off for me but it was a blast after that. :=)

Ha! Thanks very much for persevering John. I'm actually surprised you liked it, as I had an idea you disliked music where the lyrics were given more emphasis than the music (or was that somebody else?) I'm not much of a musician, so I feel like my friends think of me primarily as a lyricist, though I always try to have a really good tune to sing as well. For this album the concept was to collaborate with lots of different people, though because I was too bashful to ask for too much help, (and probably 'cause of my ego) I still ended up doing a lot of it myself.
There are intentional Beach Boys references (in "Hey Shauny Day") and one unintentional reference: A slight musical echo of "We're Together Again" in "We Said We'd Never Wear Beige".

I'm playing my first solo gig in ages tonight, at Wharf Chambers in Leeds (UK) if any locals are reading this.

How did the gig go?

Very well thanks! Nice to give my more recent, unheard songs an airing.

Glad to hear it. Are some of these songs to be found anywhere?

Sadly not! Planning a series of albums to use up my big backlog of songs but not got there yet. Thanks for asking.

I can't seem to register on that board...keep getting "invalid user name" or "user name unavailable" whether with "Moon Dawg" or another moniker. Guess I'm Dumb... Grin

Try a username without a space in it?

Thanks John! Had to think for a moment what the abbreviation meant. Incredible String Band, right?
High praise indeed.

We'll try and do another video soon.

About this new forum. After being graciously asked to join and having given the matter a great deal of thought, I have decided against it.

If asked for reasons (and there are several), I would name the overriding one, namely the presence there of a poster whose parting words here were quite simply despicable.

Yes, that is a demerit, but fortunately it's easier to block people on there. As I do with the poster in question.

Thanks so much, Josh!
Hope you like the other album.
I hope you like our stuff too, John.

"Best Job In the World" was an attempt at a sixties soul kind of thing, which obviously is very hard to pull off considering how great the musicians were on those Motown records and their ilk. Though I didn't attempt a soul vocal!

Man, I have to give you props for staying spoiler free for nearly a year, since "Wake the World" has been a setlist regular since last June.

Yeah, I've been pretty careful. It makes such a difference to one's enjoyment I find. A concert by another band recently, I made the mistake of watching the entire set from a previous date on youtube. And they didn't change the set at all! I much prefer surprises.

Here's the correct setlist (I think). Heteronym, my impressions are similar to yours. I just wrote down some more impressions but then accidentally delted them. Might try again later.

23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Track Placement on: May 24, 2016, 05:42:45 PM
Having "You Still Believe In Me" second is an early announcement that this is no ordinary Beach Boys album.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: May 24, 2016, 05:26:27 PM
Wonderful show.

I'd mostly avoided spoilers, except "Funky Pretty", so I didn't realise "Honkin' Down The Highway" was a new addition to the set. From my reaction, my amused companion said he reckoned I enjoyed that more than anyone else in the building. I said I very much doubted it. I wasn't expecting "Wake the World" or "Girl Don't Tell Me" either. A great selection of songs.

Band terrific, Brian in good mood, audience enthusiastic though not ecstatic.
I'm prepared to accept the show as possibly the last time I'll see any of the Beach Boys on stage.
