My thanks Stephen and everyone. I had not heard about this.

Does someone have a link to the list ? I can only find 2016 not the one for this year, and the link in Stephen's message doesn't seem to work.

Best

I enjoyed this one too!  Just a shame they had to squeeze it in to an hour.  I would have loved to hear more of the interviews/performances from Brian demonstrating things on the piano.  Al also had his guitar but we didn't see him use it!

It was still good to see new interviews and Brian looked relaxed.  I've often wondered why he didn't use the alternate ending to God Only Knows and thought Mark was going to ask him.  It would have been the perfect opportunity.  Grin

I did ask him, but he said he didn't remember which is not surprising since it was over 50 years ago. Seems like God Only Knows turned out ok without it, and remember  there are other parts in the released version that are no longer on the multitrack so using that bg part would have altered a lot more in the vamp.

A quick comment.

In those days the setup for all the studios was pretty much always the same regardless of the session or who was engineering. at The engineers figured out how the room sounded best and stuck to that arrangement for the players. This has a lot to do with why F. Bowen David's engineering several sessions for PS in Studio 3 sounds the same as those engineered by Chuck Britz and to some degree why even those done at Goldstar (WIBN and IJWMFTT) and Sunset all sonically fit . It was the players and the room more than the sort of experimentation with engineering that began a few years later.

Saw this thread as I was passing thru. Have you listened to the Fun Fun Fun session and vocal tracks on the Keep An Eye on Summer release ? Should answer some questions...
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower on SACD on: July 09, 2016, 08:24:27 AM
In reply to an earlier question, I supervised the mastering of all the new reissues.  I recall that Sunflower required a couple of tries to get it to sound like the original vinyl LP which was what I compared the tests of the new version to before it was approved.

Your mileage may vary.

I'm also wondering if last year's weird, sketchy attempt to "Crowd Fund" a single-disc release of *some* of the unissued Morgan tapes may have helped spur BRI to sign off on just putting the whole thing out and then at least being in some level of control of it.

Does Bug/Universal (who, I believe it's mentioned in Murphy's book, bought the copyrights of the already-released "Lost and Found" material from Morgan) still own their stake in these recordings? I would imagine that, as BRI has some level of an ongoing relationship with Capitol/UME, this made the release relatively smooth this time around.

Despite about my numerous references to MANY other releases I'd rather see from the BB archives, I am glad this set is being released and it will all be out there for historians and scholars. I may not end up listening to it that much, and it's main purpose will probably end up being as a companion to Jim Murphy's excellent book, but I'm glad the material will make it out there.

As far as I know, BMG has no ownership of any of the Hite Morgan recordings.

59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Complete Hite Morgan Sessions Will Be Released on: June 29, 2016, 10:20:42 AM
Since several people have I asked , I thought it worth noting that this is a 100% legit release approved by the group and available from regular retailers. It was compiled and mastered this year and has no connection to the previous illicit attempts to release the material by bootleggers .
60  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds 50 track listing on: May 19, 2016, 09:13:08 AM
It is indeed from the master used for the 72 Brother/ Reprise release which was originally supervised by Carl. We used it for both the CD and BluRay on the box as well as the new vinyl release.

So far, Kassem is well pleased with the results. “We searched and tried to get all the masters we could. On the monos, everything was true masters. The old-school tip-on jackets are beautiful. Two-hundred-gram vinyl: they are the highest quality. I think we did a great job. I think the albums look and sound better than ever.”

I think that passage is as interesting in what it doesn't say as what it does say -- Kassem doesn't even mention the early stereo album masters.  It's my understanding that's where the problematic tapes that i've mentioned in prior posts lie -- incorrectly leadered tapes, etc. that don't appear to be the true first-generation master.

Yeah, agree with what you are saying, Lee, interesting perspective.  I actually found this and a few other bits of the article confounding and a bit wtf - what's a bit sus for me is the original project brief was all about the stereo masters and the inclusion of the mono masters was a later decision (post some kind of discussion with members of the M&B band), as the LP liners would have it.

Perhaps, depending on how you read Kassem's quote, he's implicitly aknowledging they couldn't get complete masters of the stereo (as per the notorious problems with ASL master).  I'm putting words in his mouth, but that may what he was trying to say, by not saying it Smiley.

drbb has raised a couple of times the ASL duds sound "correct" on the 2000 twofers - it would be great to hear if these presentations were "new" digital mixes, or whether a now unavailable safety or something was used.

I also found it odd that Mark "Linett says he can’t remember if he used true mono versions to build the stereo mixes on Today! or, instead, a process known as digital extraction from his 1990 remastering."  Really?  (I'm not dissing Mark in anyway, just he's regularly pretty thorough with the tech info).

This quote makes me wonder if more albums might be added to the project at a later date:

According to Chad Kassem, founder and president of Acoustic Sounds, the parent company of Analogue Productions, his Beach Boys reissue project began when he was approached by EMI, which owned Capitol Records (both labels are now owned by Universal Music). “They came to me with an opportunity, and they asked me if I wanted to do this and would I do this,” Kassem told me in a recent interview. “They knew that I could do it right. They wanted it to be the definitive reissue series. They wanted me to be the one to do the whole catalog.”

CD, again, a bit confounding - I'm thinking no to future releases, and it's pure speculation by me - If it was intended for A/P to do the full catalogue, I think that got squashed post the UMe take-over, and they've decided to go in-house.  That aside, I still wondering why the sequence jump post Smiley to Sunflower & SUP.

The quote about the stereo mixes in the article is incorrect. I think what the writer was trying to say was that I referred to the mono mixes when doing the stereo mixes but in the case of Rhonda on Summer Days and GV on Smiley Smile we had to use digital extraction mixes because either the tapes were missing (GV) or overdubs were done during the mix (Rhonda) making a mix from multi-track impossible. This proves why I always prefer to proofread articles for accuracy. Overall a nice one, however.

Cute mockup, except Alan didn't work on the PS Sessions box, tho I wish he had. That was before he joined the team.

I was referring to the new just released Ca. Feeling 2 which includes tracks by Carl B. Wilson, Neil Innes Jon Tiven, Mary Wilson and P.F Sloan among others.

Not sure what "mystery guest" you are referring to on David's album. Please explain........

I believe the good Professor was referring to you.  Shall we keep him guessing??? Smiley

Thanks for the clarification..Didn't realize he meant me.....Perhaps we should try Beach Boys Wheel of Fortune..... Here you go......

The Professor loves this David Mark's album. I wish they had done Summertime Blues for the 50th--way way better than the old album version. Your Summer Dream as Bossa? Brilliant. Beaches in Mind can learn a think or two from this album--a great chance to let Dave rib, and JT or whoever was producing failed to get the great DM sound we hear on this album on to Radio

Fantastic--listening non-stop--bluesy, smart, warm, deep, lovely, intimate--just great.

I'm glad people are starting to find and hear David's live in the studio album. It has some great guests including the late John Walker , the man who taught David and Carl to play guitar in his last recording.

BTW the album was recorded in Western (East-West ) Studio 1 just across the hall from Studio 3 where most of the B. Boys hits were recorded.

And it is on Ms Music the same table that just released "California Feeling 2", the songs of Stephen Kalinich with a great all star cast......check it out here:

Mark,

Let me add my kudos on the job you did in the film.  I could watch 2 hours of just that portion of the movie...

Are you able to comment on what changes had to be made to the appearance of Western 3 in order to turn back the clock, and do you know if EastWest is going to leave that vintage look in place?

Lee

It was transformed just for the film, and was back to "normal" a day after we finished shooting. The large Trident console in the control room was covered with a white formic top whhich amazingly made it look the same as it did in 66 when the Putnam tube console sat on a large white table top. We removed all the current outboard gear , and brought in the period console and tape decks . The set people rebuilt the back wall of the control room and also the lower part of the walls in the studio

I'm not as Beach Boys-smart as you guys, but I thought I'd give a shoutout to the OP. I LOVE this song (this is in the ranks of my top 20 songs by them and one of the reasons I love the 20/20 LP).

I also found a little cover by a local indie band (they do mostly gospel-y stuff, which doesn't "apply" to me, but they did open for another band I liked. They're fun.)
https://pacificgold.bandcamp.com/track/time-to-get-alone-beach-boys-cover
I think it's a nice little cover Smiley

and yes, the acapella tag version is great. Acapella tags are always great Tongue

To answer a question earlier in this thread, the acapella tag and in fact the entire mix on Hawthorne was created by Alan Boyd and myself specifically for that project.........

Thanks. It was a very interesting experience, and people I haven't heard from in years have been getting in touch to  praise the film and my small role in it.

And I don't think I have ever worked with a nicer group of people .

Needless to say Chuck is one of my heroes and someone who thru his work made me want to be a recording engineer in the first place.

I wish he were here along with some of the other greats, like Larry Levine and Stan Ross who figured into the making of so many great records, sculpting the sound that had me a kid of 12 fascinated by what came out of those 45 rpm singles i heard on the radio and bought at the local tv repair shop. I don't know that my work could ever equal what was created on daily basis at Western Goldstar, Sunset and so many other studios in Los Angeles in the 60's , but it has been fun just the same.

71  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Mark Linett Thread on: June 16, 2015, 01:11:40 AM
Thanks Stephen. That means a lot coming from you. I met Chuck a few times when we were doing the GV box. Great guy. I asked him why he. Had quit engineering records at such an early age. His response was " Mark I couldn't stand all that overdubbing"

Btw I was initially hired to provide all the original sessions and tracks for use in the film and to oversee the creation of the studio scenes. I must give praise  to the set and prop people who were able to make Western Studio 3 look almost exactly as it did in 1966.

My playing Chuck was a decision made by the director to have an engineer play the part rather than having me teach someone how to act like an engineer. Made sense since they hired musicians to play the Wrecking Crew.

Having worked with Brian for over 25 years I guess I had rehearsed the part enough. It was a unique and fun experience, that I would gladly repeat if I got the chance.

72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GV Box Set OOP? on: May 24, 2012, 09:14:55 AM
Just a quick clarification.

The GV box was not mastered using No-Noise. It was mastered digitally at Capitol Studios , who didn't have No-Noise back then.

FYI the only Beach Boys releases to use No-Noise are the first CD of Pet Sounds (I know) and the first round of the Capitol era twofers. The redone twofers (2001?) were done without No-Noise.

BTW speaking of Pet Sounds , the new MOFI SACD/CD of the stereo mix is the best mastering of it imo.

The Smile Sessions HD tracks hi res is sourced from the 88.2/ 24 bit HDCD master. It is not upsampled from the CD.

74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Child of Winter music video on: December 10, 2010, 11:30:35 PM
Child Of Winter has been released as a audio single on iTunes. There are two versions, though.  Child Of Winter - Single 3:09 and Child Of Winter-master - Single 2:58. Why 2 versions? The difference seems to be the former is sans kids on the spoken word part and the latter has them like the video.

The "master" version is the correct mix. The other unfinished mix was posted by mistake and should be removed soon....... till then its an exclusive rarity that lacks David Mark's guitar and the kid's parts.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBN and GOK stereo versions - vocal leads on: November 13, 2010, 10:53:52 AM
Maybe you should read the booklet that comes with it?

Glad you found the stereo mixes . I want to give a more detailed answer to your questions.

On WIBN Mike originally sang the lead but at some point Brian decided to sing it himself erasing MIke's vocal on the 8 track tape in the process. However, when he did the final mix Brian decided he preferred Mike in the bridge so he edited in the bridge from an earlier mono mix that had Mike's vocal. But since only Brian's vocal is now on the multi-track tape when I did the stereo mix we didn't have Mike's vocal. Since the stereo mix was never intended to replace the original mono one,  with Brian's approval we left his vocal in the bridge on the boxset. However when Capitol decided to issue the stereo mix on its own we used a stereo track mix and a small piece of the original mono mix syncd up to put Mike back in the bridge. This version can be found on the 40th anniversary set and I believe on the 2001 mono/ stereo CD. It is also the version used on all compilation releases of Beach Boys tracks since that time.

GOK is a similar situation. The vocals heard on the stereo mix are the only ones on the multi-track master , so the ending on the original record is from an earlier mix before some of those vocals were re-recorded. There are also additional vocals in the vamp on the 8 tracks that were apparantly recorded but not used and a mix with those vocals can be found on the boxset.

BTW the song "You Still Believe In Me" only contains a single vocal by Brian on the stereo mix , not the doubled one that appears on the mono. On this song Brian sang the double to his lead as the 4 track master was being mixed to mono so the double was not available for the stereo mix.

I suggest that you try and find an affordable copy of the box complete with both booklets . Together they provide the best history of the making of the album.
