Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: 'Anna Lee' Smiley Smile Makes Friends Thread

For some reason this topic always defaults its subject to a backslash, and I am not sure why... I will keep trying to change it back as it goes on. There's an old bug in the forum software which makes double quotemarks (regular "typewriter" or "ASCII" double quotes) in subject titles cause the rest of the subject line to be replaced with a backslash. So until that is fixed you shouldn't use them; use something else instead. Choices include 'single quotes' (apostrophes), or curly “typographic” quotes, or two consecutive single quotemarks (''to emulate a double one''). I would recommend single quotes for simplicity, since they are easy to type. Wishing prolific thread starters would learn this ...

they're wearing identical shirts to the ones the Kingston Trio sported on the "Close Up" and "College Concert" LP's. Not identical at all. On those album covers at least, the Trio wore shirts with stripes alternating in two different tones of blue on white, while the Beach Boys wore shirts with stripes in a single blue (or red) color on white.

From the 'Breaking down "In Concert"' thread: Despite Robert Kenyatta often being credited in connection with this album as a woodwind player, he is in fact a percussionist. The flute on CAROLINE, NO and the intro to SLOOP is played here by Ricky Fataar.

was confirmation from reliable quarters that it is indeed Mike blowing up a storm on sax on "What'd I Say" (Sydney, 1964). What confirmation? The mention in the 1981 Rarities sleeve notes, "This rare gem, featuring Mike Love on wailing sax", seems like a possibly mistaken assumption by the writer (McParland?), who (I think) also was mistaken about the lead singer. Regarding MBE's comment, "No it is them and Brian and I discussed it. That is Mike on sax", it looks like the "discussed it" comment doesn't necessarily refer to the possibly separate claim about Mike on sax, which might be just MBE's own opinion. And even if Brian did say that Mike played sax on "What'd I Say", he may have meant that Mike usually did, not necessarily remembering who played on the Sydney concert. Here, here, and here (one thread) are comments by Stebbins and others.

Emily, I don't think anyone here is claiming that Mike is the lead singer of the Beach Boys or that he should be recognized as such. You said: I've never understood the idea of Mike being the lead singer. but you can understand an idea, or try to, without holding it yourself, and I think most of the responses, including mine, have been trying to do that. And to understand an idea you have to look at those holding it, which I think mainly have been journalists writing half-assed write-ups. Which probably is due to the "what do we call him?" problem, as mentioned by Lonely Summer above.

To be honest this never should have even been a thread. Moderators have never started threads about anyone's banning until now. Moderators also don't owe anyone an explanation for their decision making. Make the decision, apologize for nothing, and move on. Trying to complicate the matter further isn't worth it.
But a whole thread of speculating about and throwing brickbats at someone who isn't able to defend himself on the forum seems off to me.
Well, had the mods banned him without explaining why, or even announce it, there would have been endless speculation about the reason. And hadn't they left this thread open for discussion, someone would've started another thread about it. Better to keep the discussion in the same thread as the explanation.

Also, I've never understood the idea of Mike being the lead singer. Pre-Pet Sounds, I think he and Brian had the exact same number of leads (42 each) on studio albums.
Mike was also the lead singer because he didn't play an instrument and was the MC at their shows. but... neither of those are related. Are you saying that he was accorded the title 'lead singer' to sort of make up for feeling belittled because he didn't play an instrument? Or are you saying not playing an instrument makes him the lead singer? I don't really get it. Emily, three or four things: On the very first album, Mike had eight leads, and no-one else had more than one. On the follow-up and breakthrough album, Surfin' U.S.A., Mike had four leads, compared to Brian's three (the rest being instrumentals). Mike also was the lead singer on eleven out of sixteen U.S. single A-sides pre- Pet Sounds, including the first four, and no-one else had more than one, if we don't count shared leads (based on info from Wikipedia). Of the group's two main lead singers pre-Pet Sounds, Mike remained the only one touring after Brian quit the road. Mike is the guy with the hand-held microphone, like lead singers tend to be (even though he has it on a stand much of the time). How many pictures can you find of another member singing in a hand-held mic ?
