Actually, Joel, I have puposely avoided that show from the beginning. Of course bits of it pop up here and there so that I can't be totally unaware of it, but what I know of it is all second hand. As far as I can tell it's nothing but a glorified karaoke contest. I stay away from those too. That's all I know about American Idol and more than I ever wanted to know.
Of course its a glorified karaoke contest. That's why its fun to watch. I don't expect great art from it; just good entertainment.

Keith Levene on PiL's "Memories" That sound is psycho.
Robbie Robertson on "Tears of Rage" and "King Harvest (has surely come)" Very different sounds, of course. Tears being fed through one of Garth's contraptions, and King Harvest featuring some mindblowing minimalist lead guitar solo work, as well as riffs during the verses. Perfect interplay with the organ too (not that that matters here, but still...)
For some reason, I really like Beck's acoustic guitar sound on "Jack-Ass" from Odelay. A very full sound. Same is true for a lot of the Mutations album, though that is mostly played by Smokey Hormel.
I really dig some good surf guitar sounds too. I'm not an expert or connoiseur by any stretch, so I'll just go for the best-known, Dick Dale and Carl Wilson. I also love the surf-ish tone on George Harrison's solo on "Honey Don't". Great recording. Also, "Surf Rider" by the Lively Ones has a good sound, if I remember correctly.
Adrian Utley's sound on Portishead's albums and the Beth & Rustin Man album is spectacular. The heightened drama on the "Theme from 'To Kill A Dead Man'" may be my favourite.
While we're talking about Robbie, I've gotta mention Stagefright. Robbie tears it up in that one.

Nice tribute that smoothes over the rough edges (proving to disbelievers who need 'finished' recordings for their evidence that this is indeed a great Wilson song), but with them goes some of the pathos. The string arrangement's a bit lesser too, though the conclusion is very strong and original in compensation (if a little overextended.)
I agree with this completely. I find it quite enjoyable.

I don't think I've heard that one. I'm a relatively new convert to the Elvis camp. There is just so much live E from the 70s that it is hard to keep track. I've managed to get probably 30 shows on the Dime over that last few months. Even the sloppiest shows have moments that redeem the entire performance.

Just another mind-foda veil. Maybe his best.
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't take most of his stories to be, you know, the truth. Revealing was the part where Bob and Bono were sitting around drinking Guiness, and Bob says when they didn't know about something they would just make it up. I felt like a lot of the book was like that. Ian, as a musician, did his whole explanation of his guitar playing and singing method based on the number 3 make any sense to you? I don't play, and I couldn't really follow it.

Donald, I remember that part about touring the same markets three years in a row as involving his desire to win over a new fan base. The idea was that his old fans would probably only come the first year, and he wanted word of mouth to spread among his newer, younger fans in the second and third year.
I love Chronicles. I'd really love to hear Bob reading it out loud, as I can already imagine him saying most of the lines in the book. I mean, there are so many things in that book that ONLY Dylan could have written. His phrasing is amazing.
