51  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Discuss, praise, ridicule, and/or mock American Idol performances here. on: February 23, 2006, 12:05:49 PM
Actually, Joel, I have puposely avoided that show from the beginning. Of course bits of it pop up here and there so that I can't be totally unaware of it, but what I know of it is all second hand. As far as I can tell it's nothing but a glorified karaoke contest. I stay away from those too. That's all I know about American Idol and more than I ever wanted to know.

Of course its a glorified karaoke contest.  That's why its fun to watch.  I don't expect great art from it; just good entertainment.

You know you watched it.

Nobody has blown me away so far.  That Pickler girl certainly didn't live up to the hype, but it's still early.

The little kid who looks like he's 12 was actually better than I thought he'd be.

Ace didn't annoy me as much as I thought he would.

Keith Levene on PiL's "Memories"
That sound is psycho.

Robbie Robertson on "Tears of Rage" and "King Harvest (has surely come)"
Very different sounds, of course. Tears being fed through one of Garth's contraptions, and King Harvest featuring some mindblowing minimalist lead guitar solo work, as well as riffs during the verses. Perfect interplay with the organ too (not that that matters here, but still...)

For some reason, I really like Beck's acoustic guitar sound on "Jack-Ass" from Odelay. A very full sound. Same is true for a lot of the Mutations album, though that is mostly played by Smokey Hormel.

I really dig some good surf guitar sounds too. I'm not an expert or connoiseur by any stretch, so I'll just go for the best-known, Dick Dale and Carl Wilson. I also love the surf-ish tone on George Harrison's solo on "Honey Don't". Great recording. Also, "Surf Rider" by the Lively Ones has a good sound, if I remember correctly.

Adrian Utley's sound on Portishead's albums and the Beth & Rustin Man album is spectacular. The heightened drama on the "Theme from 'To Kill A Dead Man'" may be my favourite.

While we're talking about Robbie, I've gotta mention Stagefright.  Robbie tears it up in that one.

Love the sound Lindsey Buckingham got on"Out of the Cradle".

I'll be buying this today.  I'll post my thoughts after giving it a few spins.

57  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ed Harcourt's cover of "Still I Dream of It" on: February 19, 2006, 11:42:36 PM
Nice tribute that smoothes over the rough edges (proving to  disbelievers who need 'finished' recordings for their evidence  that this is indeed a great Wilson song), but with them goes some of the pathos. The string arrangement's a bit lesser too, though the conclusion is very strong and original in compensation (if a little overextended.)

I agree with this completely.   Smiley   I find it quite enjoyable.

I just heard this today for the first time.  A nice version of one of Brian's best songs.

Joel, that is my brother's friends' band!

Your brother's friends' band rocks!  I like their newest cd even better than the first one.

As advertised on The Beach Boys 20 Super Hits.

That was not only the first Beach Boys record I ever owned, but the first record I ever owned, period.

I'll have to catch up with you guys tomorrow.  I'm heading home.  Think I'll listen to An Afternoon in the Garden in the car.

Cheers!

I don't think I've heard that one.  I'm a relatively new convert to the Elvis camp.  There is just so much live E from the 70s that it is hard to keep track.  I've managed to get probably 30 shows on the Dime over that last few months.  Even the sloppiest shows have moments that redeem the entire performance.

I think the fact that the Elvis In Concert album even came out is the most disrespectful epitaph for one of the greatest figures in Western popular music.

I haven't heard that one, the live '77 shows I've heard have been downloads.

I like some of the 1976 sessions, but the 1977 live material is almost unbearable. It's really sad how far the man fell in 1977.

I've only heard a few shows from '77, but I found them unbearably poignant.

I think you missing out there.  Check out the Jungle Room Sessions.  That's heartbreaking, soulful stuff.

Edit: I see Ian beat me to the punch.  Smiley

Just another mind-foda veil. Maybe his best.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't take most of his stories to be, you know, the truth.  Revealing was the part where Bob and Bono were sitting around drinking Guiness, and Bob says when they didn't know about something they would just make it up.  I felt like a lot of the book was like that.

Ian, as a musician, did his whole explanation of his guitar playing and singing method based on the number 3 make any sense to you?  I don't play, and I couldn't really follow it.
72  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Reopening Dylan discussions of all kinds on: February 16, 2006, 12:32:11 PM
Donald, I remember that part about touring the same markets three years in a row as involving his desire to win over a new fan base.  The idea was that his old fans would probably only come the first year, and he wanted word of mouth to spread among his newer, younger fans in the second and third year.

I love Chronicles.  I'd really love to hear Bob reading it out loud, as I can already imagine him saying most of the lines in the book.  I mean, there are so many things in that book that ONLY Dylan could have written.  His phrasing is amazing.

Man, I had no idea that song was about heroin addiction.  I just love the way it sounds.  I'll have to crank it up louder and listen to the words.

"Starting Over" seems the obvious choice.
