When I was a teenager (late 70's, early 80's) absolutely nobody I knew listened to the BB's. No one. Completely off the radar screen. Everyone knew of their famous surf and fun songs, but I don't know of anyone who was even aware of Pet Sounds. I sure wasn't. I think you either need to be a kid or an adult to appreciate them. Teenagers are too worried about coolness, at least they were when I was a teenager. And for better or worse, the BB's have too much of a corny image to be cool. Kids (say, younger than about 14) are too young to care about that, and (most) adults learn not to care about it.
FWIW, around the time I was a teenager a lot of kids my age were sick of the Beatles. Lots of us might have liked them, but they received so much worship and attention from anyone and everyone 10 years older than us (which seemed like an entirely different generation) that they didn't want to hear anything more about them. Though I wasn't in that camp, I'd say they were only maybe my 4th or 5th-favorite band. I didn't really start to appreciate them until I was in my 20's.

Am I the only one who had his Beatles' obsession ruined by The Beach Boys? No, you're not. A year ago, if you asked me which band was better, the Beatles or the Beach Boys, I would have said, "Duh! The Beatles." Now I'm not so sure. However, it has not diminished my love of the Beatles, it's just that now I realize they had much better competition than I realized before. ;-)

I love Billy Joel.
One thing I really respect about him is, after he put out his River of Dreams album, he basically said, "that's it" and has never put out a studio album since (aside from the classical one). I recall reading somewhere that he said 'I've got no more songs in me' and that's what made him stop. A lot of artists would continue to write songs and put out albums long after they've run out of steam, simply because they can, or don't know what else to do with their lives, or some other reason. But I admire someone who knows when he's out of steam, and calls it quits before he starts producing a lot of mediocre stuff.

Surf's Up would have been a cool name.
You just wouldn't have had a band name like this in the early 60's. Of course I respect your opinion, but my opinion is as follows :- Anyone who doesn't find The Beach Boys a cool name is a nob-head Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with their name ... but I do think some names could have been better. I suppose you're right and a name like Surf's Up wouldn't be thought of in the early 60's. Maybe The Breakers, or The Waves, or even the Wipe Outs. The problem with Beach Boys arises when, they're no longer "boys." Maybe Beach Guys? Beach Dudes? Beach Bums? Anyway, the existing name is good-enough.

So, are we to presume, then, that Germans are a bunch of robots? Theyve said in many interviews how The Beach Boys were a big influence
Not so much musically, but the fact that they represented California the same way that Kraftwerk wanted to represent Germany
they said something along the lines of "if you wanna know what Califronia was like in the early 60s, just listen to the BBs"
they hoped to give the listeners the same experience of how Germany through their music

Surf's Up would have been a cool name.
Did anyone ever find out the individual(s) who changed their name, and if they considered any other alternatives?
If you mean in the beginning, wasn't it Russ Regan, the DJ, on his own? Or a similar personality? Too lazy to run to the book shelf to look up something I've known for years. I always thought it was someone at the record company. I could be wrong.

'When I Grow Up To Be A Man' - that's one coda that I wish lasted for a bit longer.
I was listening to California Girls today, and started to wish the same thing for that coda as well. At least another 15 seconds would have been nice.
