701  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Billy Joel on: March 02, 2013, 07:57:40 PM
Maybe Billy's listened to too much Beach Boys and thinks we're just singing That Same Song.

When I was a teenager (late 70's, early 80's) absolutely nobody I knew listened to the BB's. No one. Completely off the radar screen. Everyone knew of their famous surf and fun songs, but I don't know of anyone who was even aware of Pet Sounds. I sure wasn't. I think you either need to be a kid or an adult to appreciate them. Teenagers are too worried about coolness, at least they were when I was a teenager. And for better or worse, the BB's have too much of a corny image to be cool. Kids (say, younger than about 14) are too young to care about that, and (most) adults learn not to care about it.

FWIW, around the time I was a teenager a lot of kids my age were sick of the Beatles. Lots of us might have liked them, but they received so much worship and attention from anyone and everyone 10 years older than us (which seemed like an entirely different generation) that they didn't want to hear anything more about them. Though I wasn't in that camp, I'd say they were only maybe my 4th or 5th-favorite band. I didn't really start to appreciate them until I was in my 20's.

Am I the only one who had his Beatles' obsession ruined by The Beach Boys?
No, you're not. A year ago, if you asked me which band was better, the Beatles or the Beach Boys, I would have said, "Duh! The Beatles." Now I'm not so sure. However, it has not diminished my love of the Beatles, it's just that now I realize they had much better competition than I realized before. ;-)

I love Billy Joel.

One thing I really respect about him is, after he put out his River of Dreams album, he basically said, "that's it" and has never put out a studio album since (aside from the classical one). I recall reading somewhere that he said 'I've got no more songs in me' and that's what made him stop. A lot of artists would continue to write songs and put out albums long after they've run out of steam, simply because they can, or don't know what else to do with their lives, or some other reason. But I admire someone who knows when he's out of steam, and calls it quits before he starts producing a lot of mediocre stuff.
707  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Name on: February 26, 2013, 09:45:57 PM
Surf's Up would have been a cool name.

You just wouldn't have had a band name like this in the early 60's.

Of course I respect your opinion, but my opinion is as follows :- Anyone who doesn't find The Beach Boys a cool name is a nob-head
Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with their name ... but I do think some names could have been better.

I suppose you're right and a name like Surf's Up wouldn't be thought of in the early 60's. Maybe The Breakers, or The Waves, or even the Wipe Outs. :D

The problem with Beach Boys arises when, they're no longer "boys." Maybe Beach Guys? Beach Dudes? Beach Bums?

Anyway, the existing name is good-enough.

From #47 on that list, one of my most-often-watched videos. Though this was filmed in '72.

Popularity isn't, by any means, the best judge of quality, but it's interesting to look at the top 100 lists for both years:

1965-67 in my book. If I had to pick a single year it would be '66.

So, are we to presume, then, that Germans are a bunch of robots? :D
Theyve said in many interviews how The Beach Boys were a big influence

Not so much musically, but the fact that they represented California the same way that Kraftwerk wanted to represent Germany

they said something along the lines of "if you wanna know what Califronia was like in the early 60s, just listen to the BBs"

they hoped to give the listeners the same experience of how Germany through their music

Not surprisingly, someone has already made an animated light display on their house using this song.  Grin

It's well past Christmas, but someone recently brought this to my attention.

Click on "Play Song"

Pretty funny!  Cheesy

Here's the lyrics
Quote
I I love the colored lights every year
And the way the neighbors stop their cars and stare
I strap a Santa Claus on my roof
Plastic candy canes and reindeer everywhere

I'm stringing up decorations
It's draining the power stations
Fake icicle'll light four nations
Imported from third world nations
I'm stringing up decorations
I'm freaking out fire stations
I'm pumping out radiation
My neighbors are out of patience

"Hey, pal, come on knock it off...It's three in the morning!"

Got to keep those yuletide decorations up all winter
God appreciates my plugged-in tribute to The Savior
God would love it if I could keep 'em up till well past Easter

Amen

Good, good, good decorations
I'm putting up a manger station
Three wise men's destination
Nutcrackers in full claymation
Little Drummer Boy animation

Fa-la-la-la-ho ho ho
Fa-la-la-la-ho ho ho
Fa-la-la-la-ho ho ho
Fa-la-la-la-ho ho ho

Good good decorations
I'm stringing up decorations
It's draining the power stations
Fake icicle'll light formations
From third world nations

Surf's Up would have been a cool name.

Did anyone ever find out the individual(s) who changed their name, and if they considered any other alternatives?

If you mean in the beginning, wasn't it Russ Regan, the DJ, on his own? Or a similar personality?  Too lazy to run to the book shelf to look up something I've known for years.
I always thought it was someone at the record company. I could be wrong.

'When I Grow Up To Be A Man' - that's one coda that I wish lasted for a bit longer.
I was listening to California Girls today, and started to wish the same thing for that coda as well. At least another 15 seconds would have been nice.

I don't know for sure, but I wonder if this is the longest internet discussion ever on the Beatles vs the Beach Boys:

BTW, I can't help but wonder if some of the BB's cried while singing some of these songs. Was just listening to this and Mike almost sounds like he's fending off tears during the refrain while singing the "If I've been the one you love" etc. lines. I know I sure would have.
722  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB songs that make you cry/choke up/shed a tear on: February 22, 2013, 03:05:47 PM
I have just decided, moments ago, that I cannot listen to Side B of "Today" at work (esp with headphones on) because most of the songs make me tear up, and it's a bit embarassing to start crying at work.

I've always liked the acapella vocals at the end of God Only Knows (alt.)
Agreed. First several times I listened to that I was in tears.

Coda, outro, ending ... whatever your preferred term is. There's undoubtedly technical differences between the terms, but I'm just referring to any kind of ending.
725  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's codas on: February 21, 2013, 10:08:36 PM
Forgot to mention God Only Knows, which is probably the Mother of All Song Endings.
