Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love vocal problems

I always wondered if Mike's voice got even more nasal due to his voice changing with age. Maybe he found it easier to hit the notes by singing even more through his nose, as opposed to from his chest (like Carl). Could have been a stylistic choice like Andrew says, but I don't know why anybody would want to sound that nasal. I like Mike's voice a lot, but I find stuff from the early to mid 90s painful to listen to, with the Budokan show from 1991 or 1992 or whatever being particularly bad. I have to agree though, that from 2000 or so on his voice is perfectly acceptable, even if it's mellowed with age.

Funny this thread popped up, I was considering starting one like it. The other day I was being dragged through the mall by my wife and we passed one of those Curves workout centers. They have a big curtain up so you can't see the people working out, but I could hear the music they were playing loud and clear, and no joke, they were playing the Beach Boys version of Wipe Out with the Fat Boys. I stopped in my tracks, and listened for a few seconds to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me. Sure enough, it was Wipe Out.

Just listened to California Girls on rolling stone's website...Well, I'm usually pretty tolerable of any type of pitch correction/auto tune/whatever you want to call it, but that really does just suck. It is entirely possible to use auto tune and let it work its magic while keeping it pretty transparent. Apparently nobody told Joe Thomas that. I'll reserve final judgment until I get the CD tomorrow, but that clip sure isn't getting my hopes up. For a live recording it doesn't have much life to it.

I never thought Baker's falsetto was as bad as some here claim, but I do agree he didn't fit the BB sound. But really, I thought he sounded pretty good on some songs, and pretty awful on others. I feel the same about Foskett. Good on some, awful on others.
And hey, I like the stuff he recorded with Mike in the 90s. It's not like they replaced the originals or anything. Kind of fun to listen to every now and then.

That might not be the correct inference. Mike often steps out of the way, pretty respectfully for the lead singer to shine. If you see various clips where Mike does not have the lead, he steps back, and only steps to the mic when he has a part to sing. People are waving at him all the time; he is waving back. That analysis is such a stretch of the imagination. JMHO
I was just joking around, hence the

If we gauged Mike's interest by how often he points and waves at somebody in the crowd, he must really hate his life and all the songs the band performs. Sersiously though, and I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing that if Mike doesn't want to perform a song, they aren't going to do it.
