LOL Oh man, I needed a good laugh this morning.  Bruce laying some funk on the bass...

Could the last six pages or so of posts be moved to a separate "lol mike love sucks" thread?  I'd hate for, you know, actual "studio news" to slip through the cracks and confuse everyone.

California Girls from the Sea World soundcheck, with Scott Totten singing lead.  Kind of cool.

Just posted on the BB Facebook page:

You are correct that it was Mike who vetoed the track from TWOTS. He said it was a downer.

Glad he let the feel-good, fun, fun, fun 'Til I Die stay on there.
106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M & B Tour 2013 on: April 08, 2013, 11:28:44 AM
Just wanted to add a couple of more comments that I forgot to add last night:

- I don't want to be that hard on Christian Love but I don't think his vocals sound at all like Carl Wilson and I don't think he sings with an energy; also his body language doesn't portray an energy either; he's right up front BUT HE BARELY MOVES!

I couldn't agree more.  I've said this before, but Christian does have a really good voice (sort of similar in tone to Carl, but of course nobody can match Carl), and if he actually even pretended to give a sh*t, he'd sound so much better.  He just looks like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world.  The rest of the band is having a great time up there, but he's kind of a buzzkill.

And I kind of wish they'd go back to opening with Surfin', I thought it was a pretty cool.  As much as I love Do It Again, I've never thought it was the greatest show opener.
107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M & B Tour 2013 on: April 08, 2013, 06:43:41 AM
That is pretty wild.  Here's hoping they're still feeling adventurous with the set lists when they make their way to my neck of the woods in August.  Has the M&B band ever done Wild Honey?  Come to think of it, when was the last time it was performed?
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: April 07, 2013, 08:51:55 PM
Indeed. Any idea why he stopped?

He had a baby.
109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M & B Tour 2013 on: April 07, 2013, 08:40:33 PM
- they left the stage at the end, only to come back for one more song/encore - "Fun Fun Fun" - so I thought; so they come back onstage and launch into this scorching version of "Wild Honey" with John Cowsill on lead vocal; flat out best version of the song I ever heard; I sat there stunned; 99% of the audience didn't know what the hell they were listening to

For real??

And who sang Brian's lead on Isn't It Time?
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Follow-up on: March 27, 2013, 07:30:12 AM
while Bruce will go all "Hendrix at Monterrey" on his keyboard.

I would pay serious money to see an 80 year old in yellow shorts drop acid and light his keyboard on fire while Surfer Girl plays in the background.
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Follow-up on: March 24, 2013, 01:57:59 PM
Actually Bruce did have a bit of a presence on the album. He did the lead for the chorus of "Isn't It Time" and he had a part during the verses of "Spring Vacation".

That is true, but I was thinking something along the lines of She Believes In Love Again.  He could at least get a verse or two of a song, rather than just a couple of lines.

And I have to agree about Al.  I know he's never had many leads, but I was just hoping this time around he would, considering he has (arguably) the best-aged voice in the group.  But who am I kidding, I really couldn't care less who is singing lead.  If we got a new album, I'd be happy with just about anything.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Follow-up on: March 24, 2013, 10:22:35 AM
I'd personally like a mix of all three, as long as they would make a coherent album.  And in all honesty, if they do make a new album, I'd expect more outtakes and the like than 100% new stuff.

What I'd really like is for the lead vocal duties to be distributed a little more evenly.  Yeah, everybody loves Brian, but I thought he took a few too many leads on TWGMTR.  Al should have had at least one or two more, Mike should have had a couple more, and hell, even Bruce should have had something.  Maybe not an entire song, but at least something.
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New official site on: March 24, 2013, 10:12:02 AM
Yeah, it was Bruce. I didn't want to say who because it was a private conversation, but he was definitely of the opinion that they didn't count.
Personally, I consider them members because they wrote, sang and played on three albums (plus a track or two on Fifteen Big Ones in Ricky's case) and were credited as members then, but I suspect it woudn't be politic for them to be listed as equal members.

Not to mention that in the few years Ricky and Blondie were in the band, they had a hand in writing almost as many songs for the band as Bruce did in all his years as a "legitimate" member.
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New official site on: March 22, 2013, 05:39:07 PM
Good call.  The House of Blues would be perfect venues for them to play some deeper shows like they do in the UK.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New official site on: March 22, 2013, 05:19:44 PM
'The Band' section shows the full group...

I like that you can click on each member to visit their website, but when you click on Bruce and you get his wikipedia article.

There are some nice pictures in the photo section, and a few I've never seen before.  Hopefully they update it.

That was freakin' hilarious, I nearly pissed myself at the finger snapping.  Almost as funny as the Kiss shreds video.

For anyone interested, Mike's facebook page just posted a link to the new band website: www.thebeachboys.com.  Looks pretty good.

Chill pills all round?

+1.  Really wish everyone could be cool with everyone else's opinions, regardless of what you may think of them.  It is possible to respectfully disagree with someone without being insulting.  Everybody here would do well to remember that.
119  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: March 19, 2013, 05:59:23 PM
Is Country Love/First Love ever gonna see the light of day? I actually really enjoy First Love.

I do too.  Very nice late-70s, laid-back california sound to it.  It deserves a proper release.  I could live without Country Love, though.
120  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank The Tracks #28: Stars & Stripes, Vol. 1 on: March 19, 2013, 01:23:07 PM
For whatever reason, S&S vol. 1 is the only Beach Boys album I've never owned.  Not that I have anything against it, I've just never come across it, and really have never felt compelled to seek it out.  The few promotional appearances with the guest vocalists I've heard seem alright, maybe I'll pick it up someday.
121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Bruce an original member? on: March 18, 2013, 07:12:50 PM
Does anyone remember that video someone posted a while back where Bruce makes a daring leap during (I think) a C50 performance of "I Get Around"Huh

Edit:
Nevermind, found it.

122  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank The Tracks #27: Summer In Paradise on: March 15, 2013, 11:30:32 AM
I think SIP's reputation is a bit overblown, it's not THAT bad.  I've liked it ever since I got it for a (surprisingly) reasonable price on ebay a number of years ago.  In fact, I think a handful of the songs are BB classics.  Yeah, I said it.  Anyway:

1.  Lahaina Aloha - great vocals from both Mike and Carl.  Just a great song.
2.  Strange Things Happen - great (but short) Al vocal, too bad he isn't featured more on the album.
3.  Summer In Paradise - odd lyrics aside, great song.  I really love the chorus.
4.  Still Surfin'
5.  Under The Boardwalk - I actually think this works really nicely, drum machine and all.
6.  Island Fever - OK, not great.  I prefer the US version over the UK one.
7.  Slow Summer Dancin' - Another great Al vocal, but one of Bruce's duller songs.  (And this is Bruce we're talking about here...)  Nice, but forgettable.
8.  Hot Fun In The Summertime
9.  Remember (Walking In The Sand)
10.  Summer of Love - this is so dorky, I can't help but like it.  Definite guilty pleasure.
11.  Forever - yeah, it's stupid and pointless, but I have fond memories of this from Full House (which I loved as a kid, and I still love today, damn it.)  That said, I really like Carl's harmony part during the last verse.
12.  Surfin'

So yeah.  I'll always stick up for Summer In Paradise, even if I'm one of the few out there.  If people could get past the early 90s production and keep an open mind, I think they'd find a lot to like.
123  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the Tracks #26- Still Cruisin' on: March 03, 2013, 04:22:42 PM
This ought to make for an interesting thread...

1. Somewhere Near Japan - My favorite 80s BB song.  I wish the alternate version from the music video was available on CD.
2. Still Cruisin' - It's cheesy, sure, but I'll be damned if it isn't catchy as all get-out.  I may be one of the few that was a little disappointed it didn't get played at the C50 show I went to.
3. Kokomo - Again, I know it's cheesy, but I love it.  I have fond childhood memories of the Muppets performing it, and I still enjoy it.
4. Island Girl - I don't really care for it, but Carl's vocal saves what is otherwise a pretty forgettable song.
5. Make It Big - I dig the big 80s synths, and I like Mike's part in the song.  Other than that...it's ok.
6. Wipe Out - I can't get past the video.  The Fat Boys are actually pretty cool, but I'd rather forget this collaboration ever happened.
7. In My Car - What an awful song, made even worse by completely inappropriate production.  The drums are so over the top and I just can't stand Brian's voice in this era.
124  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Just got barred from the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fanpage on Facebook on: February 28, 2013, 09:15:47 AM
It was a head shot in profile if you want to take a look, however all the 'contentious' comments have now disappeared as they banned us. I will post the full text of their ranting later when i have more time but they actually said that anyone sympathising with those banned will also be banned. A friend of mine posted that he thought they were being a touch childish. Yup, you guessed it, banned 30 secs later.

I guess it's their page and they can run it how they want...but good lord.

I can't believe I'm just seeing this now.  That has to be just about the coolest thing on the internet.
