What would Brian look like if he grew a beard again?

+ = Huh

I've been of the mindset that a beard suits post 60's Brian better than being clean shaven but, I guess I never really put any serious thought on how he'd look with one now days.
3  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: May 04, 2016, 07:26:07 PM
It's sad that it came to this but, I also find it sad that in many communities/fandoms the more 'elite' members "can practically get away with murder" as they say (the Doctor Who fandom kind of comes to mind here).

I never had any run ins with AGD that I recall (and I'd like to believe even if I had I would keep feelings about that separate from this) and I want to stress as much as possible that I don't celebrate the banning of AGD, at least not on a personal type level but, I do applaud the mods for not putting an uber-fan ahead of the rules. Not enough boards and fandoms are willing to do that sort of thing.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Scenario: Let's say you get a time machine and travel back to about 1965.. on: May 04, 2016, 02:50:32 PM
And let's also say you end up with a pretty high position in Capitol Record's PR department. What sort of things would you have your PR department do and would would you suggest The Beach Boys themselves do to give Pet Sounds a much higher chance of being the #1 seller it should have been in '66?

While I'm at it: What efforts do you think you, your PR department and The Beach Boys would need to make to virtually ensure Heroes & Villains as a #1 single?

All within legal non-shady as possible bounds, please.  LOL
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's sick to death of hearing about the beatles....!? on: February 08, 2014, 11:59:01 AM
Kind of but, only in the sense that I'm sick of news about The Beatles that isn't accompanied by words like "to release Carnival of Light on (date)" or "catalog confirmed to show up on Spotify starting tomorrow". yeah, yeah, yeah important band, great pop songs, significant impact on pop culture, who knows what the music industry would be like if not for them, etc. now shadup about all-a that and let us finally get to hear any of their songs whenever we want via Spotify.  Wink

(do you think i'm going to be beyond miffed if this year passes by without a (good) deal between The Beatles catalog music and Spotify? gee.)

I listened to the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album for the first time earlier this week. It didn't even need to grow on me, I just immediately took to it. By the time I had finished it I, without hesitation, rated it a full 5 stars on allmusic.
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Beatles *sigh* on: August 30, 2013, 08:45:14 AM
Is it true that the lack of Beatles on Spotify is more down to the deal with iTunes than anything else? If you had to make a prediction for when The Beatles catalog might start showing up on Spotify, what would it be? I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment here but, if Apple Records/the remaining living Beatles & the estates of the departed Beatles wants to something big for next year (50th anniversary of the Ed Sullivan appearance, etc.) getting the catalog on Spotify would certainly do the trick. (Though I am more so hoping next year will get something akin to 'Anthology 4').

I've had fantasies of a Sgt. Pepper Sessions Box Set going through my mind and so I ask: Did the bootleggers get a hold of everything or is there a pretty good chance that if such a set was released that it would contain alternate takes and the like that even the most hardcore of Beatles collectors haven't heard? Also, would they be able to include vocals only tracks and instruments only tracks versions of all the songs (ala: Pet Sounds sessions)?
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MiC on Spotify now on: August 27, 2013, 02:17:16 AM
Now it's on Spotify in the US.

Thanks a bunch, man! I would have figured I'd get a notification on there about it being available as The Beach Boys are one of the artists I'm 'following' on Spotify but, nope, the first I hear of it being available on US Spotify is from you so.. thank you.

"In The Back Of My Mind" (1975 version)

I'm crossing my fingers that this shows up on the Love & Mercy OST.

My patience (aka: being too lazy to deal with the whole proxy thing) will be rewarded come Tuesday when MiC pops up on US Spotify.. r-right?  Cry

Why did it show up on Finland Spotify anyway? A screw-up or has the album for some reason been legitimately released there already ahead of the August 27th date?

I guess you had to be there in the early sixties... It sure is a nice song and production, and the echo is indeed luxurious, but I've never really got it's greatness, I mean it's not that amazing... River Deep - Mountain High, now there's a proper Phil Spector epic!

Ha. I was just about to reply with something similar. I understand why "Be My Baby" gets the recognition it does, it's certainly more well known and popular then "River Deep - Mountain High" and one could argue it's more 'important' as well but putting aside things like popularity and historical importance I simply think RD-MH is Phil Spector's greatest production work.

I love the track list. Mind you, if (god forbid) certain people end up being right that this will be the last time The BBs release something that has previously unreleased/extremely rare tracks I might look back upon on this with a slight bit of disappointment. However, I don't think The Beach Boys/Capitol are closing their archive vaults for good and more unreleased Beach Boys songs, live material, vocal only tracks, etc. will eventually see the light of day.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again on: June 05, 2013, 06:19:12 PM
I doubt I am the first to suggest something like this but, someone with a flute should record themselves playing it tunelessly & loudly for 30 seconds and then post it to various places on the internets as the leaked 30 second clip from WIBNTLA.
16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Bands/singers you've mixed up on: May 29, 2013, 07:09:59 AM
I've done this with Chicago and Three Dog Night. Specifically, hearing "Make Me Smile" on the radio and getting all giddy about discovering an awesome 3DN song I had never heard before.  LOL
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: May 29, 2013, 06:14:29 AM
So how high or slim are the chances that Brian Wilson will go the re-recordings of hit songs with various celebrities route like Davies, Fogerty, etc. have done?

I say it's pretty inevitable. Brian's people are probably in the middle of planning such an album as I write this, actually.  Two that I highly expect to see: "I'd Love Just Once To See You" featuring Britney Spears and "Hey Little Tomboy" featuring Marilyn Manson.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More studio news on: May 04, 2013, 05:31:42 AM
I keep getting excited and disappointing myself when I see words like "Brian's in the studio with Beck" as opposed to "Brian's in the studio with Jeff Beck". Not that Brian working with a virtuoso like Jeff Beck is a disappointment. Just that Brian working with Beck (as in "the Odelay guy") would be real swell too.

Really though, much like Lindsey Buckingham, Beck is a guy who certainly has pop sensibilities but has a panache for the 'weird' and I rather like it when people like that work with Brian.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More studio news on: April 21, 2013, 01:51:29 AM
If this new album ends up actually being a reworking of some older material, I'm hoping it'll be "Adult/Child" rather than "Love You"

Though, I guess I can kind of understand Brian's handlers wanting to steer him away from an album that would involve him recording Shortenin' Bread. LOL
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love Appreciation thread on: April 21, 2013, 01:43:42 AM
His lyrics on Today ("Kiss Me, Baby" has been mentioned. "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" and "Please Let Me Wonder" are really strong material as well.)
A high count of excellent vocal performances.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME WARNING

In a manner of speaking, he was kind of right when it came to Van Dyke Parks' Smile lyrics. Now before you sharpen those axes let me state: I love Van Dyke's lyrics and had Smile been completed I would have wanted it done with his lyrics as intended.
But Mike's right about it not being quite 'commercial' material. The H&V single 'bombing' the way it did I think could be mainly blamed on the lyrics. And hey, the lyrics to H&V, from my personal view, are some of the best written but if you try to see it from your average feller's or lady's view point the lyrics are a bit inaccessible.

Brian probably still plays it when he is home alone. Grin

Probably!

Oh man, this whole thing gets crazier and crazier (and pretty awesome too!). It's also now hit me that "Gettin' Hungry" uses the 'the heroes the heroes the heroes an' uh villains' melody. Wow.  Azn
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 09, 2013, 06:30:37 PM
Not really a real question but more of an observation that came about from listening to the SOT Smiley Smile:

Maybe my ears & memory are mixing up melodies but I do believe the melody being played during the bridge of the Smiley version of "Wonderful" is the Bicycle Rider Theme, right? I'm pretty darn positive it is and if so, oh my god. And even if we're 'supposed to' consider Smile and Smiley Smile separate from each other it makes me wonder if towards the end of the sessions Brian was considering working "Bicycle Rider" into the Smile version of "Wonderful".

Agree, has always been that way to these ears. And to these ears the closest thing to it is what we've come to know as the Vegetables tag employed in the new mix for TSS…

Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice…

I'm beginning to think of the Bicycle Rider theme as Smile's "Shortnin' Bread" riff.  LOL

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smiley Smile songs we would miss on: March 30, 2013, 08:01:46 PM
I very much miss the angry, bitter, drunken voice and piano version of "Caroline No" that Brian would definitely have recorded if he'd given up on Pet Sounds partway through the sessions and done something else instead.

Man, as much as I'm really in awe of fan covers of the entire Pet Sounds album and how close many of them are to the real thing, I'm hoping that someday a fan or so will veer off that sort of path and make Pet Sounds ala Smiley Smile (Pet Sounds ala Love You would be great too!).

On the opposite side of the spectrum someone doing the Love You album in the manner of mid 60's Brian Wilson production would be pretty groovy too!

Do You Like Worms and Holidays are definitely tracks I could see getting Smiley Smile versions in an alternate universe, they both fit the mood of the album.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike Examiner interview on: March 20, 2013, 02:58:56 AM
I've come to recently appreciate Mike Love a bit more than I had before. I had held the whole "greedy Mike Love" view but, you know, I got to thinking about things and in the end the only thing that really makes sense is Mike genuinely loves being a performer. Yeah, I know, he (well, 'they', actually) charges money for the concerts. I'm not advocating him for sainthood or anything like that.  Wink Although, it's probably not as good as Brian's, Mike probably gets a real nice check from Capitol (or direct deposit!) every month thanks to royalties & perhaps other things. He can certainly buy himself plenty of distractions so I kind of doubt Mike Love does the touring thing constantly because he doesn't know what to do with himself when he's at home. I know it's a rather morbid thing to say and I do apologize for doing so but I wouldn't be surprised if Mike's idea of a 'perfect death' would be to go out singing/performing on stage.

Forgive me I'm not very good at getting across my thoughts. I just mainly wanted to get across that, at the very least, I respect how much Mike Love enjoys being an entertainer. He could most certainly afford to live it up in retirement instead but he continues to do his Beach Boys thing. Hats off to him for that.
