1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Promo video for the 50th anniversary on: December 10, 2016, 08:45:32 AM
What do you think about this aberration promo video for Pet Sounds' 50th anniversary? I was quite dismayed be it. Damn, the best album ever should receive better treatment.

On the other hand, it really has that buffoonish, silly, childish humor that only the internet age can provide us. So I made my own version, using Blank Banshee's track "Purity Boys" on the background. https://1drv.ms/v/s!AvpQYATUWD0xjMgUzuoLMv-Ucm1XJg Enjoy Smiley

^ Doesn't sound right to me. I have Gb9 (Gb left hand / Bb-Db-Ab right hand) to Db6 (Db / Bb-Db-Gb).

Can't figure out the rest.

Yeah that's more accurate

Ok so, the progression is Gb - Ab - Db, but with some movement inside the chords. The first one basically moves between Gbmaj7 and Gb6(9)/Db. The second one moves between Ab7 and Ab7sus4/Bb (Bb left hand / Ab-Db-Eb-Gb right hand - that's the chord which terrei referred to as Db6). The third one is Db, with some nice movement in the bass, maybe without the seventh, and it finalizes in Ao. I recorded myself playing it to confirm it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7-MLlpEFs_AN1IySGg3SXB1a3M/view?usp=sharing

I could't go to the piano to really work this out but it's definitively Gb - Ab7 - Db7/Co/Db7, with some color notes added for each chord (I'd say the 13th with Gb). It is the same progression for Love to Say Da-Da/Blue Hawaii (and Heroes and Villains, but with a different timing).

Just listened to it, ugh. There's no reason to do that, Love. Wall
By the way, I'm 99% sure that the intro is a the original recording, but half-step higher and with some frequency filtering on it. If you listen carefully, you can hear a quiet thump in the background, on the last beat of the first measure in both the original and Love's rerecording. There's also some conversation in the background, something that is not very likely to be caught in modern recordings. The characteristic hiss in the intro also stops once Love's vocals come in.

Has anyone heard of this group before? They're based in Tokyo, and they basically perform Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Glenn Campbell and other 60's music! Brian's songs include Please Let Me Wonder (video), When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), Darlin' and Guess I'm Dumb. They even perform "Don't Run Away" by Terry & Bruce. They have three released albums, all of them both in Stereo and Mono   LOL

I was (happily) surprised when I heard this. One of the wonders of recorded music is how it can make music reach people all around the world.

Yesterday I literally scared my roommates... I couldn't stop laughing out loud of the "awful cute"/"oh f* you" line in Palisades Park  LOL LOL LOL LOL

Just finished chapter 2. A great read so far and I think it is very Brian. The story a few weeks back saying he spoke to his co-writer over many months and many calls rings true. The story is all over the place but in a very good way. Chapter 2 alone covers (from memory) Hawthorne, St Charles, Kokomo (song and place) Holland, Landy, Carl's death, recording 'Surfin', his children, writing and recording many songs and albums, The Wondermints and first shows, present day in Beverly Hills...and probably much more.

Most bios I've read cover the early days till today chronologically but this is different.

A great motivational line from Ray Lawlor encouraging a nervous Brian pre-show in the early days of his solo career. I will leave it to the reader to find it themselves.

That is because it's a memoir, not a biography. Biographies need to be more accurate and, generally, follow a chronological order, while memoirs can have more subjective, non-rigid structures.

Just finished this book the other day. While many love (no pun intended) to bash Mike Love (i do in some cases, like the 1988 R&R Hall of Fame speech),i think this is a decent book.

The problem is that even Trump's book is decent, but by no means it gives him merit for anything but for his good writing skills or, more probably, for having enough money to hire someone who has.

I literally had a nightmare with Mike Love saying that Van Dyke's lyrics are "acid alliteration". That is one of the lowest points in Mike's long series of dubious, stupid comments.  Angry

A good song. Terrible lyrics, but beautiful melody and harmonies.

Rock n roll album? Boooooring.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love’s finest vocal moments on: September 16, 2016, 04:33:29 AM
Caroline  No.

Just kidding. Although I really hold many negative opinions about him, his personality, his lyrics and most of his "songs",  I pretty much appreciate every Mike's vocal PRE-74l, specially his mellower voice from the ballads. His vocal tone really improved from Today!, as can be heard in Aren't You Glad, All I Wanna/Want to Do, Pet Sounds material, among others.

Unfortunately, something happened in 76 that really screwed everything up. His voice became terrible.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Book Discussion Thread (and how it relates to the SS board) on: September 09, 2016, 09:21:57 AM
It's very quaint how pejorative his use of the term "hipsters" is.

I assume this is ok to post at this point in time since it is publically searchable but if not I'll take it down. I know Mike is much better at lawsuits than the rest of us.

Dear God, Mike will use every single opportunity he has to boast and elevate himself, even if involves sensitive matters like racism or the death of an innocent person. I mean, hasn't everyone already noticed that this is the point of the whole book? If it follows the same ways of his interviews, than he simply doesn't intent to actually provide interesting and reliable information to fans; it's just his tool to externalize all his ego-inflating feelings and, successfully or not, affect people around him.

Just watch the the the book promo video that was posted on the Beach Boys's Facebook page. No words for that.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Toronto July 4th concert VIP poster - where is it? on: August 24, 2016, 09:22:49 AM
Hi all!

Did anyone here attend Brian's Pet Sounds concert in Toronto, July 4th? I was told by the production staff that they were going to send us the promo posters by mail, but I got nothing yet.
 Huh Angry

Does anyone have any other info regarding this?

I'm praying he pops over to The UK or Ireland.

It's been just over a year since I've seen something BB's related live and I'm getting restless

Man, I haven`t seen anything BB`s related live in my lifetime!
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any possibility of a Brian internacional tour? on: October 17, 2013, 06:48:43 PM
He has kinda neglected you guys in South America, hasn't he? Only one show in 2004 during the BWPS tour and he didn't even play the album then. But it's all down to whether or not South American promoters want him...

Well, The Beach Boys had a show scheduled in Chile right after the 50th Anniversary Tour (maybe a good sign?)
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Any possibility of a Brian internacional tour? on: October 17, 2013, 06:43:24 PM
Following the hype of Brian`s new studio album to be released I was wondering if there are any chances of him doing a world tour and I`d like to know more opinions!

Well, I`m saying this because there were producers from other countries trying to get the 50th Anniversary Concerts, so maybe there`s still a chance to see Brian, no?   Roll Eyes

This is really cool. Are they on something? I don't think I've ever heard Brian's speaking voice from this period, quite different than I've ever heard.

I think the tape is actually running in a slightly higher speed than the original, making Brian's voice sound different.

Yeah, that's the LP I got. It's a lovely piece of work. It's even got the same style inner sleeve as the MoFi LPs have!

I would LOVE to own that pressing? Do you mind telling how much you paid for it?
