Any help with the lyrics and writing credits is appreciated!

Run James Run

I got a pretty good job and a fascination
For the souped up ‘32
There’s a line outside
And they wait for a ride
Just to see what she can do

She’s an easy rider
When you sit beside her
She’s a real heartbreaker
You try to pass her but you never can shake her

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Fast as you can go
Find a ride (run, run, run a little faster)
Get inside

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Take her by the hand
Find a ride (run, James, run a little faster)
Be the man

You can stop and stare but she really doesn’t care
If she’s running really loud
She’s a top and a closer
And a real good short
When she’s hanging with the crowd

Her wheels keep turning
As the wood keeps burning
Goin’ faster, faster
You can catch her but you’ll never outlast her

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Fast as you can go
Find a ride (run, run, run a little faster)
Get inside

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Take her by the hand
Find a ride (run, James, run a little faster)
Be the man

(Guitar Solo)

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Fast as you can go
Find a ride (run, run, run a little faster)
Get inside

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Take her by the hand
Find a ride (run, run, run a little faster)
Be the man

You’d better run James run
A little faster
Fast as you can go
Find a ride (run, James, run a little faster)
Get inside

Wow. Some interesting stuff, but definitely needs proofreading, as GM stated.
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Blondie Facebook Q&A on: September 04, 2017, 06:28:42 AM
I was wondering that too, but I'm not sure that the response was aimed specifically at Carl after re-reading it. The fact that he referred to the band as "any of those guys" and spoke about Carl during his favorite memory may indicate that he had a falling out with the band, or some members of the band, but not necessarily Carl.
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Heroes and Villains Live Iteration on: September 04, 2017, 05:28:41 AM
Mike does not have a lot of vocals during songs like this, so rather than just stand there like a tool, he injects snippets of BV to stay busy vocally, I guess. I don't mind it at all as many of the song parts like this (and bicycle rider) were not even known by the public back in the 70's.

Interesting how one might think, "WTF is Mike singing that for?" or "why is Carl singing about bicycle riders!?" - only to find out years later when SMiLE material was released, that it was indeed part of the original concept. Or one of the original concepts. For me, it was the "you're under arrest!" part that grated on me and sounded goofy and out of place when I first heard it, as I had only heard the single version up until that point.

In fact, I used to have a quarter taped on the stylus because I thought the record skipped at about 1:25 just before the "la la la la la ... stand or fall" part. It wasn't until I replaced the 'defective' album with another one and it still sounded like that, did I realize it was intentional. Embarrassed

I love Al. He seems like a great and humble man and his voice is still amazing. But a close-up, black and white set of images in that lighting is not doing him any favors. His forehead looks like the cracked desert image from the Surf's Up album sleeve.

It is a good interview though and he sounds like a guy who really appreciates working with Brian and still sounds like he is leaving the door open if a reunion opportunity presented itself.

Interesting to hear Brian is thinking about doing a Rock and Rolll album Grin

That's the first we've heard about that. Grin

I have the 1971 Anthology Album and side 4 sounds a lot like what is described in the article from what I remember. It was humorous, but pretty odd compared with the other three sides of that album. Is that what the Filet Of Soul recording was supposed to sound like? Although it is compared to Party! I found it disjointed and forced, unlike Party! which flowed smoothly.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's songwriting: do his songs sound \ on: August 18, 2017, 05:45:38 AM
I always thought that Dennis' songs sound unfinished because they were unfinished. Other than what was released with Dennis' permission.

Maybe not all were unfinished, but instead were unpolished? We've heard demos or alternate versions of songs that sound nearly identical to what was released, but they lack "a certain something" that the released version has.

Consider the instrument only version of Sloop John B from Stack O' Tracks - then listen to the final version from Pet Sounds. A simple technique like just dropping the instruments for a short time and letting the beauty of the boys acappella voices shine makes a huge difference. Dennis may have had some changes in mind to enhance his songs even though they were nearly complete. A few lyrical ones perhaps?
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Most Challenging Song (Instrumentally) on: August 12, 2017, 10:33:26 AM
Point taken. Maybe I should re-title it to "most unusual"? In fact, that is exactly what I meant, thank you  Smiley
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys Most Challenging Song (Instrumentally) on: August 12, 2017, 06:29:55 AM
Hopefully this makes sense, but what is the most challenging song Brian has composed?

I play guitar, but I am not great at it. When trying to pick out chords on a lot of their songs, I find that there are a lot of unconventional chords, or chords that you would not expect to be occurring in their music. I assume it was because the songs were written on piano where they make more "sense" but it got me to thinking what the most challenging songs were.

By that, I mean songs that use chords or techniques that may not be 'expected'. Key changes. Pitch changes beyond the usual 1/2 to 1 step. A song where something sounds right when listened to as a whole, but when listening to the music itself, you wonder how they got away with it. Barring the modular concept of assembling a song, of course.

As an example of this, I love This Whole World because the key changes are all over the place, but the vocals flow so well that it is not jarring or disjointed in any way.

I do not mind self-indulgent! The music box melody intro actually reminds me of the Beach Boys song Wind Chimes, specifically "whisperin' winds send my wind chimes a tinklin' part. I dig the third part "Who Cares?" as I am also a huge Electric Light Orchestra fan.  Afro   <-- Jeff Lynne

I like all of the incarnations including Gary Cherone and Wolfgang, actually. They all brought something fresh to VH and Ed playing with a renewed vigor each time is a beautiful thing.

Sammy had a great voice and brought more of a pop sound to the group but I did not care for a lot of his lyrics. "So good. So Nice." Really? Just seems like there are better adjectives out there. I have a bunch of his solo stuff as I am old enough to remember I'll Fall In Love Again and Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy when they weren't oldies. And I have a soft spot for Trans Am as I had a Trans Am  Grin The Live Without a Net video was great and the guys were having a great time then. The music following 5150 with a few exceptions got more serious and strayed from the fun party feel of 5150. That happened with Dave too with Women and Children First and Fair Warning, but Dave's lyrics work better with the darker music for me.

Gary came in I thought it was great. I grew up in Massachusetts and Extreme was always on the radio, so as a guitarist, I was a big fan of Nuno already. I bought all of Extreme's stuff and they have some great music. Then their biggest hit is an acoustic song. LOL. I really felt that Gary was going to pull it off as he could easily sing both Dave's stuff and Sammy's stuff. Plus, he is a great guy - you listen to interviews and he does not say a bad thing about anyone, even when baited. He has a distinct voice and I am still not sure what happened there - I think Ed melted down and Alex just goes along for the ride. I like Gary's voice with the band but his writing can be too political for me to enjoy. I did really like Without You but it sounded like an Extreme song - and Fire in the Hole which sounded a bit like he was channeling Sammy and had a kick-ass opening riff.

When it was announced Wolfie was in the band, the first thing I did was roll my eyes. Not for long though. His vocals are certainly not Michael Anthony-level but this kid can play! When they first released the She's the Woman video, I think the guy recording it was by the bass stack and you can hear him playing some fine bass. We would not have A Different Kind of Truth if not for Wolfie so I appreciate that. The kid just has zero stage presence. But the idea that there was a new Van Halen album in 2012 AND a new Beach Boys album that same year made me a very happy guy.

I really miss Michael. His voice and personality are not something you can replace. Although I think that his vocals are best when used as background vocals. He is featured singing on some YouTube videos and it is unremarkable, but there is no denying his contribution to the BVs. Mikie's the man! I hate some of the things I hear Ed say about him, too.

Sammy keeps fantasizing about getting together with them one last time. Do a couple of Dave songs and a couple of Sammy songs. I cannot say that it would not be the coolest thing ever to have the current line-up with Dave and Wolfgang sing a few then Sammy and Mike get up with Ed and Al and sing a few. Maybe get together at the end and have a finale with all of them. It would be huge and the extra voices may drown Dave out a little, which would not necessarily be a bad thing.

You are right! The whole is greater than the sum of its parts though, and it is so obvious to EVERYONE.

I wish they would put out an album of new music - nowadays they do not even have to be in the same room at the same time. Tour less, record more is my motto for the boys. It was magic to listen to them again on TWGMTR and despite the auto-tune, they sounded great, if not a little like a Brian Wilson solo album at times, but I mean that in a good way.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: California Girls duet with David Lee Roth and Mike on: August 04, 2017, 07:56:51 AM
If you have not heard the isolated vocals from Dance The Night Away, they are here. I think that Dave redeems himself from Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love. They are drenched in reverb, but the harmonies are absolutely beautiful! Ed and especially Mike are, well On Fire. Unlike the harmonies in 2015 on In a Simple Rhyme here which you can never unhear. Ed is lucky he is a guitar God and his chops are still intact.
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone - 12/1999 - Lawyer: \ on: August 04, 2017, 07:42:04 AM
Still reminds me of getting together with your old group at a high school reunion, and one guy is still single (pretending to be happy) has not grown up and is almost exactly the same as he was 20 years ago, while the rest of the group has matured, married and raised a family.

The Wilson's could all move forward and do outside projects with other musicians. So could Dave and Bruce. Mike isolates his head and stays in his safety zone. (Hey, that should be a song lyric!)

As much as I like Al, he basically does the same thing and it is sad because some new music with his freakin' amazing voice would be cool.
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: California Girls duet with David Lee Roth and Mike on: August 04, 2017, 07:33:10 AM
LOL! Yeah and he chose that particular concert to release. Imagine what the other ones sounded like? The isolated DLR vocals are hysterical but where else area you going to hear "Goddammit baby you know I ain't lying to you, I'm only gonna tell you one time aaaahhhyyeaaaah" like that? I use that vocal to practice over. Love that you can hear the slide whistle so well and surprised how dry the vocals were. I expected more reverb.

Probably my top three favorite bands are the Beach Boys, Van Halen and the Kinks. I like that they intertwined. I wish there was more interaction between the music of Brian and Ray.

It was, ironically, Carl in that translated 1989 interview who correctly predicted that Mike would be the last one still standing and touring after everybody else was gone for one reason or another.

I am wondering if that was a dig.

The man wasn't necessarily blessed with superb vocal talent, but it's hard to argue that David Lee Roth is one of the best frontmen of all time.

Hahaha. So true. His vocals and lyrics were perfect for Eddie's guitar. When you listen to some of the tracks without vocals, you see that Dave had a lot of talent for fitting lyrics into spaces - and making them work - where others were not as successful. I never felt Dave's vocals were lame or sound dated. Other great musicians with less than stellar voices? I have a Rolling Stone live album where Jagger is panned hard to one side. When you flip the balance control and isolate him a little more, it is cringe-worthy. Jimi Hendrix is another musician where his voice was not exactly that of a songbird, but it fits his music and mood perfectly. David Lee Roth and Mike probably share a similar ego, but I remember seeing this and thinking it was lame until the third or fourth time when it started to grow on me.

Love the "live" Hawaii version of California Girls. Listening to the ending chord/bass progression brought Your Imagination to mind instantly.
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: John Stamos: Love Him or Hate Him? on: July 30, 2017, 05:19:33 AM
I have always liked John Stamos. While I cannot say that I loved his version of Forever on Summer In Paradise, I did like the 'duet' part with Carl after the solo. When it was on Full House (the first time) I thought it was great. It is unfortunate that Full House became a bit of a stigmata for him. He is a talented musician who can sing and play multiple instruments. I doubt he will ever be a virtuoso with any of them. He can act in campy roles quite well, and I actually enjoyed his portrayal of Dr. Brock Holt in Scream Queens. For the Beach Boys curious, he puts a recognizable face to the band. Leave his past out of it, and he is just fine in the band from time to time. The girls had eye-candy with Dennis and John helped bring that back. It sure ain't Mike or Bruce or Foskett or ...you get my drift. Grin
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Focus and Patience of Brian in the Studio on: July 30, 2017, 04:54:04 AM
Every time we get a new release, or when I just feel like going back and listening to the Beach Boys building songs, I am confused by a few things. We read how tedious it was to do multiple takes of songs, or different variations to get the right 'feel' but the boys seem very relaxed and focused while doing this. Brian exhibits so much patience and softness when directing the Beach Boys or the Wrecking Crew and there are only a few times when he seems to be impatient.

I think one of those times was during God Only Knows when the suggestion is made to make the drums more staccato just before the vocal interlude. Brian seemed to get very excited - but never rude. Even during the Help Me Rhonda sessions with Murry he never seemed to lose his temper.

I am not sure why, but one of my favorite moments was during the recording of And Your Dream Comes True (under the working title "You're So Sleepy - Wish That He Could Stay")

"Wait a minute. Get the key Brian on the piano. Get the key."
"I got it. That's good enough."
"No it isn't! "
(plays three notes on the piano)
(sings) You're... (spoken) "well, you were right."(laughter)

I can't help but think these guys respected each other and enjoyed what they were doing most of the time. I rarely hear any negativity that is talked about come through on the bits that are released to us. Are there more tapes with negative attitudes captured?

Brian's ability to do more than 20 takes of the same song and have such a calm demeanor never ceases to amaze me. I would have killed half the people in the studio. He is so gentle to everyone - even the people who keep screwing up his takes.

98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / I'm Wondering If This Was An Intentional Joke by Brian? on: July 30, 2017, 04:16:21 AM
Brian caps off this interview, with a great response. I love his sense of humor because it is often so deadpan. But do you think it was intentional? I read that he was a good baseball player, but still... and he had the beard first.

Quote
Today, Brian lives a sober and settled life in Beverly Hills with Melinda and their children, aged between seven and 20. He starts a typical day "by watching the morning news" before going to the deli for breakfast. "I can usually get myself calm with a good walk... Some days I find my way back up to the piano." I wonder what would he have liked to have been, if he not a musician? He muses, "I would have been a baseball player, you know."
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Tapatalk, anyone? on: July 29, 2017, 07:28:28 AM
Definitely do not do it. Although it makes it easier for the user, I run a board that had a serious security issue based on the Tapatalk extension. After some research (and a Google search) all of my issues pointed to Tapatalk being the source of the breach. Tapatalk basically denied the problem was them, but it was painfully obvious that the extension was allowing new users to bypass the required admin approval for new accounts. Spammers were able to log onto the board without me enabling the account and post all kinds of crap. Once the Tapatalk extension was removed, the hole was closed and the spam posts immediately stopped. Tapatalk updated the extension so this particular issue may no longer exist (even though they denied it did in the first place) , but I will never add that back to my site again.
