Why on earth did Mike decide to not release the re-record of Big Sur? Of all the cruddy remakes he has released recently, that's like the only one that probably could've stood a chance at getting some real praise from people in Mike Love "Reevaluation Mode". I hope he doesn't get the bright idea to re-record All I Wanna Do with special guest Gavin Rossdale.

This not surprising at all. I do not think Mike will release a re-recording of anything that does not meet his "sun in the fun" idea of a Beach Boys song. "Do It Again" and "It's Ok" are both upbeat, catchy and easy to sing. Kind of what you want from the general public who do not have a history of the band beyond the latest greatest hits collection. That seems to be who he markets to, so it makes sense from that perspective.

I am currently listening to the Big Blue Party wireless speaker from Brookstone. I think it is about $200 USP and I love it.

Although I understand what people are saying about the Beach Boys music, I was also around in the day of the mono car speakers.

Back then my first "stereo" was an old VOM turntable that my dad was going to throw away (16, 33, 45 and 78!). It has no speakers, so I borrowed a cheap pair of car speakers from a buddy and threw it together with some speaker wire. The bass was a little better than my old Dodge Dart and once I was old enough to work, I bought a Soundesign stereo with real pair of speakers. I could hear a little difference with each improvement. After that, I added a graphic equalizer and that helped mold my sound. By the time I made it to the Alpine stereos (back then with huge speakers, no less) music really started to feel as if was happening live. When you closed your eyes, the instruments felt like they were right in the room with you.

Again, the Beach Boys always sound great, but there were subtle changes to the sound which helped bring nuances the music that I did not notice in the past. Either low's that were not as audible on my old crummy speakers back then or parts that just seem to jump out more with the EQ. At that time the stereos had treble, bass, balance. I really miss the balance controls on most digital music settings.

I was really surprised at how small the Big Blue Party speaker vs. how good the music sounded. I lot of people are blown away when they come over and hear the BBP around the fire pit, horseshoe pit or pool. The cool thing is that you can go to any Brookstone store and tried the Big Blue before you buy.

I think I would like to interview the interview (Will Hodgkinson) and ask to him about Brian. I cannot imagine taking the time to write all of these questions out hoping to get some insightful responses, only to get some of those responses! Brian is hysterical, whether he means it or not.

Mike Love refutes the idea that he ever said "Don't f*ck with the formula" or some other iteration of that phrase. Clearly he remembers everything he ever said.

If the Brian would have made an 'about face' after Pet Sounds and went back to writing surf/car/girl songs and they score a few number one hits, I get the feeling that Mike would have said, "cousin Brian was starting to go off the rails, so I told him not to f*ck with the formula. I knew if we could just sit down in room together with no distractions, we could do it again. And I was right."

The powerful keyboard riff in Gettin' Hungry blows me away every time I hear it.

I think there may be some bias there.  Fans will more than likely find something to like because, well, because they are fans. We are fanatics about the music of the Beach Boys. Fans probably have more of an understanding of the mystery of the SMiLE stuff and Brian's condition throughout the years. That is a powerful story in itself. The troubled genius who makes such amazing music.

Fans look for new Beach Boys stuff. We post about it here before it comes out and anxiously anticipate every song. Then we dissect it and make alternate mixes and share it with the world. There is a lot to like about SMiLE.

Critics should be well-versed in the subject matter they are writing about so they probably understand more about the Beach Boys than the average listener.

Consider that back in the day with just radio, you listened to whatever came on. You could not really cherry-pick your music like nowadays. You could change a station, but that is about it until the cassette tape came along. Even then, you had to record from the radio (often getting DJ chatter and ambient room noise like telephone ringing) or you had to have a friend who had the album and you could record from that.

If SMiLE was played on the radio today like back in the day, I think a lot of people would be scratching their heads and the positive reviews would be fewer. It can be odd, but we fans find it endearing and quite powerful, and as such embrace it.

Look at the last three letters in the YouTube link for Fun, Fun, Fun. Even YouTube wants to know "WhY".  Places that should be quiet so various aspects of the music are accentuated, now sound too busy and unnecessary. Isolated vocals may have some cool interpretations. But just because you can add more instruments does not mean you should. And they shouldn't have.

As much as i'd love to see it, The Beach Boys 2012 tour was so close to perfect and at this point how many freaking versions of Fun, Fun, Fun or Good Vibrations do we really need?

Well, we have not had a new version of Do It Again in months now...  

Actually, I would be all in for a new album of Brian-written material (especially if it included the Life Suite stragglers) with Al, Bruce, Mike and David adding some touches. each of the guys could offer some lyrics here and there. Minimal auto-tune. It is only a matter of time before it will be impossible.

I loved the striped shirts. Instantly recognizable and in my opinion went way beyond the defines of a fledgling band. With the prolific album output their fledgling days were long over and they still wear the striped shirts.

A band that was so in tune with harmony wearing the same outfits fits seems to show almost a subliminal redundancy. The same with the late 60's white suits. Later on as the group was more diversified, they all wore their own thing. Again, it seems to be a reflection of the group itself, each wanting their independence and greater creative input. Now it is just a bunch of old guys in Hawaiian shirts.

Mikes attire was often cringe-worthy. Brian too, in the robe stage. Each of the boys have worn things that by today's standards do not look right, but even to this day if you see a group with blue and white or red and white matching shirts and white pants, you think "The Beach Boys". Very effective marketing if you ask me. The Beatles covered "formal" and outrageous was not right for this group.

Pat Benatar's version of  I Need A Lover is WAY better than John Cougar Mellencamp's rather monotonous version.

Davies solo stuff or entire catalog? Not much different, really. I like Other People's Lives and Storyteller. That bit about the solo in You Really Got Me was hysterical. I actually like Americana, but one of my favorite Kinks albums was Give The People What They Want, so you have to consider that. Even though he song-name-drops like Mike Love when he wrote Destroyer. 

Currently obsessing over Greta Von Fleet. Listening to them is great, but I do not care for watching their videos. I love the Zeppelin sound just like when I first heard Whitesnake's In the Still of The Night. In their case, I did like watching their videos, but for a different reason. Halestorm put their spin on In The Still of The Night and I like that too.

I don't mind Brian's Back at all. I never minded all Mike's song-checking and Carl's voice just makes this song. Kind of like Kokomo. I mediocre song made better by Carl

I am always blown away by how perfect the Beach Boys harmonies are. Not just the note-perfect harmonies, but the way they are blended. Part of the reason they sound amazing is that they sound so much like each other... but too much of the same sound doesn't work either.

Sometimes it is difficult to tell Dennis from Mike, Mike from Al, Al from Brian, Brian from Carl, Brian from Dennis, etc.  This is mostly in the vocal stack. But with all the similarities, a wall of Brians does not sound the same as the original blend. None of the touring bands sound like the 5 original guys. What nuance is missing?

Of course, the guys also have their distinct voices as well that are easy to pick out but it has always intrigued me how nobody can precisely match their sound even when singing note-for-note and sounding a lot like them.

Who Sounds Like The Beach Boys?

Nobody. Not Mike's band. Not Brian's band. They had a truly special vocal stack that has not been matched.

NOBODY wants a movie filled with session tape transcripts.

Unless the session tape transcripts state: "Hey Chuck! Is it possible we can bring a horse in here...?"

This dude can sing barbershop quartet. Most of the BQ songs I listen to on Youtube are quite sloppy, but this guy is crisp and precise. A fun (fun, fun) take on the song. Thanks.

Lydia Cornell... Well, I will just say that most guys were not watching the show for Ted Knight, although I did enjoy his acting style for sitcoms.

I really liked 1408.

In fact, 1408 and 409 are both guilty pleasures of mine.

I think Beach Baby sounded like a Beach Boys song. To those who do not study each note of every song the Beach Boys sang, that is.  It has the nasally lead and the stacked harmonies.

If you get a good copy and listen with headphones, you can hear the splices for the harmony parts for some reason. And for what it is worth, I think the band accredited to this song is called "The First Class" not "First Class".  Considering that they were a UK group singing about L.A. in a style much like another famous harmony band from southern California, I would say they were "borrowing" this style of song from The Beach Boys.

Why not? One could draw these parallels between Stephen King and the Beach Boys: The material came from a brilliant mind that have been to dark places. Like the Beach Boys songs, Stephen King's films could be broken down into categories where there are offerings that:

Are very good, but not as well-known (Stand By Me, The Green Mile, Misery and 1408);

Appeal to the mainstream audiences (It, Carrie, The Shining) and then;

Are intentionally less serious offerings (Creepshow, Creepshow 2, Maximum Overdrive, The Mangler).

The Beach Boys are referenced in his books and films. I am a big fan of both the Beach Boys and Stephen King. Maybe it is sort of finding a balance in life? To the casual fan the Beach Boys were upbeat and positive and Stephen King was dark and creepy. It is only when you delve into their work a bit more you find that they each wove in and out of their publicly pigeonholed genres quite a bit.
