Full Sail is a great Carl lead but I'm into sailing so some bias there.

HCTN, aside from being far to long was 2-3 years late trying to get the disco crowd. The Four Seasons, also industry veterans, timed it perfectly with 'Who Loves You' 75-76.
5229  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Roger Daltrey to front Dennis Wilson doc on: December 10, 2008, 07:11:17 PM
The BBC Radio 2 homepage looks pretty comprehensive so I am sure it will be available at some stage.

I am interested in why Roger Daltrey? Not that there is any reason why not but did he know Dennis very well?

Bruce tells his story about Keith Moon and I have a book with Moon on stage with the band in the early 70s but what was the history with The Who, if any?
5230  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Roger Daltrey to front Dennis Wilson doc on: December 10, 2008, 12:08:47 AM
Oh yeah.... Cool Cool Cool

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/2008/12/roger_daltrey_to_front_dennis_wilson_doc.html

Roger Daltrey, frontman of The Who, will narrate a special one-off documentary commemorating the 25th anniversary of the death of Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson for BBC Radio 2.
Pacific Ocean Blues: The Life and Death of Dennis Wilson is a 60-minute documentary by Made in Manchester Productions, which will use interviews with family, friends and bandmates to examine every aspect of his personality and talent.

Contributors include ex-wives Barbara and Carole, surviving members of The Beach Boys and his closest friends, many of whom will be interviewed for the first time.

A founding member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was raised in the shadow of his older brother and musical genius, Brian.

As the only surfer in the group, he inspired many of their early hits.

He was also the band's pin-up who lived the rock and roll lifestyle that ultimately resulted in his downfall.

Among other things, Wilson starred in a cult movie, married one of his daughter's friends and lived with future serial killer Charles Manson.

Furthermore, he emerged as a musical genius in his own right, recording Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977, which is today considered one of the best albums of that decade.

The programme will look at his song-writing development using music, some of which had not been heard until recently. The doc will also chart the darker side of his life, as he spiralled into drug and alcohol addiction and his struggle to find happiness.

Wilson, who left behind a string of failed marriages and a number of children, drowned at Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, in 1983, aged 39.

Made in Manchester creative director Ashley Byrne said: "Dennis Wilson's story, which has never been properly told, is among the most interesting and tragic in rock and roll history."

Pacific Ocean Blues: The Life and Death of Dennis Wilson, was   produced by Matt Haslam, executive produced by Russell Crewe and Ashley Byrne.

It will broadcast as part of Radio 2's Christmas and New Year schedule.

Author: Rob Shepherd.

With no Beatles I think Brian would have followed the life style of the Stones and taken a sh*t-load of drugs, a teenage bride and eventually been fired from his own group... ehhh?  Huh
5232  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The last instance of Brian's \ on: December 07, 2008, 05:20:07 PM
Re the instruments. I think Donna Summer was next so may have been hers.

Multi tracked for sure. I prefer Graduation Day from 84 to display their live vocal chops at the time.

Hard to tell about Brian but they are all reaching for the high notes at the end.
5233  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Grammy noms are out. on: December 07, 2008, 12:47:22 PM
Like the Grammys ever really mattered that much.

For sure. But the band did think it was important to front a few years back for the wooden spoon. Or as I call it, the 'we have f**ked up by not knowing good music when we have heard it so give them the 'Life-time Achievement grammy'.

This just reminded me I read this on the BBBritain site this week. True? Who..eh..nose! Grin

Great quote from a Glen Campbell interview in the new ESQ.
ESQ - "Any memories come to mind about some of the other individual Beach Boys?"
Glen - " Carl Wilson was a really nice guy and a good player, good singer, good everything. He was just an all around musician. And the guy who sings through his nose - what's his name?"
ESQ - Mike Love
Glen - Mike Love, yeah. I always said to him 'If you ever hurt your nose, man, you'll be out of a job'"

as for those who'd rather discuss food with him - i don't believe you

Guess what? Its true. Not food for me but as I mentioned, travel.
So let me get this right. If you met Brian at the coffee shop he frequents and you struck up a conversation, you would encourage him to talk about music? Nice.
Just because it is the reason we are on this board does not mean Beach Boys music, Brian's music or the music of others would be of interest to Brian Wilson or any artist during their down time. In fact I would class it as rude.
The time for music is when they are writing it, recording it, promoting it or performing it. Outside of that leave it alone.

Given the state of Brian in the last 40 years I can not think of any reason he would want to discuss music out of hours. His short answers when he is on the clock confirm that.
5236  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could pick 5 albums to play for Brian Wilson... on: November 24, 2008, 06:34:55 PM
I think i'd rather eat a meal with Brian, and discuss food with him to be honest.

I agree 100%. Would anyone on this board want to discuss their work or career 24/7 ?

I'd sooner give him 5 travel books.

We had 37 years for a album that didn't exist. We are just warming up!
5238  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian to discuss 'Pleasure Island' this Saturday. on: November 23, 2008, 12:54:50 AM
I think it was because he was commisioned to write it and once he had signed a deal he was bound to it.
The good reviews in London made Capitol think it was a good decision to record it. Business, pure and simple.
5239  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian to appear on Late Night with Conan O'Brian this evening on: November 22, 2008, 06:21:36 PM
This is a weird observation, but you can usually tell how Brian's doing by how  the cuffs on his shirt are in proximity of his hands. If the shirt is too long, he usually will have a bad day. I don't know why that is.

That's genius. Cool

Also allows him to wipe is nose!
5240  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian to discuss 'Pleasure Island' this Saturday. on: November 22, 2008, 06:17:08 PM
Oh, and Pleasure Island - he's not writing the songs, just currently thinking about it. No mention of Pinnochio, rather a bunch of teenagers who discover an island...

In that case I'm Brad Pitt- not sleeping with Angelina, just currently thinking about it!

Brian didn't have a title for PS in 66. Mike came up with that but now he has titles before a note is recorded?

Yes it could be a answer for all those interviews.

Q: So what's next for you Brian?
A: Well I'm going to make a album called 'Pleasure Island'.

Now might be a good time to insert this thread from September when this project was first mentioned.

"There isn't anybody I know -- my publicist, my wife, my managers, myself, my current group -- I don't think any of us think there is any hope for a Beach Boys reunion," Wilson says vehemently over the phone from his home in Los Angeles where his neighbours include Robbie Williams, Paul Stanley and Avril Lavigne.

Saturday, November 22nd, 10am - 1pm: Brian Wilson
Michael chats with genius Brian Wilson about who he voted for in the recent election, plans for his next concept album ("Pleasure Island, A Rock Fantasy"), and his favorite records (which include The Doobie Brothers "What A Fool Believes").

Hmmm...'Best Behavior'.  Sounds like a perfect album title.

The other interesting possibility could be some new pairings. While comment both good and bad has been made about Al's writting ability, put him together with Dave for a few hours and anythings possible. How about Bruce and Dave? Also another Brian/ VDP tune  with band vocals isn't unrealistic is it?

One point not discussed. The roof-top reunion two years ago. Brian had a deal with Capitol for TLOS. It seems someone at the label has a soft spot for the band. They could say to Brian TLOS was ok but now they want a new Beach Boys album or nothing. Certain parties in Brians 'management' seem to like the spotlight Brian receives and it would be hard to say no I think.

Beach Boys Return To Capitol: New Album And SMiLE Boxset Soon has a ring to it that some folks on that roof-top in 06 may find hard to turn down.
