Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Estelle Bennett. Slightly o/t

Just read in the latest Rolling Stone that Estelle Bennett, one third of The Ronettes, and sister of Ronnie Spector passed away last month from colon cancer. Seemed to have slipped under the radar. The small story said she had mental health issues that most, aside from family, were aware of and had often lived on the street after the group split in 1966. For those who watched their induction to the Hall of Fame a few years back may remember her only appearing at the end of their set and questions were asked why. Now we know she had her problems. Sad.

Not the Zombies concert apparently.
The Zep thing was just thrown in as a number for a reunion gig.
As has been stated many times, the BB's never broke up to most people and some kind of reunion may be of interest to the likes of us. (1274 members) countered by the Blueboarders who IMO would switch from being anti reunion to pro at the flick of a switch if Brian wanted it.

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,25181315-5003421,00.htmlMoon, who died in 1978 (bassist John Entwistle died in 2002), always had aspirations to be a singer, and Daltrey says Moon was never happier then when he was singing Beach Boys songs. "He was a mad Beach Boys fan. He would have left The Who at the drop of a hat to join the Beach Boys. "Even at our height, when the Beach Boys were on their way down and The Who were at the top of the world, if the Beach Boys had asked him to drum for them, he would have gone. We used to do Barbara Ann for Keith to keep him happy."

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys 50th Anniversary in 2011

There's been a push on Motown's 50th and Buddy Holly, 50 years since his death and it got me wondering. Any projects such as books, album compilations, movies etc for the BB's would surely be in the discussion stage by now.
Any word on projects, and just in case the powers that be are reading this, what would you as a fan like?

Wouldn't it be great to have a crystal ball?
I can only use a comparison to the likes of Eric Clapton being influenced by Robert Johnson from the 30s with his blues playing. Many years from now when a new vocal group comes on the scene, I see no reason why they would not be influenced by the Beach Boys style in the same manner as Clapton and others were with the old blues artists. The subject matter of the songs would be secondary to the vocal complexity and mix I would expect.

Good points about picking out Brians band-members voices but to be fair The Beach Boys all sang leads on record so the listener knew what they sounded like. Most of Brians band do just get lost in the mix on stage.
I also think if you were to ask Jeff and co in 1999 what they would be doing in the next 10 years I doubt they would have guessed the BW gig would have lasted this long and recorded, so called, new material. From memory the band was put together not to sound like the live Beach Boys but to replicate the band on record. Hence the high numbers on back up vocal plus the skilled musicianship.
I guess to make a real interesting vocal mix on Brians TLOS and SMiLE albums he could have got some Mike, Carl, Dennis, Al stand-ins and multi tracked them as he did in the old days but the intention was to tour those albums so it made sense to keep the recording in-house I guess.

I guess this goes on all the time in the music industry or any industry for that matter. We all want a bigger slice of the cake but sometimes the numbers just don't justify it. Brians solo touring career has at best broken even so any movement in costs etc can make a project unviable. I can mention a few years ago a senior member of Brians band did discuss exchange rates and how they can make a foreign tour uneconomic.
I also read a story about Joe Cocker being on the road and his normal piano player got offered more to tour with (I think) David Bowie. Now who wouldn't do the same?

Had the chance to watch the whole doco today. Great to watch but I still prefer my EH DVD. The line 'welcome to the world of the Beach Boys' followed by the interpretations on the 'Surfin USA' lyric is classic. No mention of David, Blondie or Ricky but good mention of the various BB factions and legal issues. VDP's and Manson well covered too. A mix of EH and this doco with extended tracks would be perfect.
BTW. Is it a contract requirement that when discussing the Beach Boys on camera, the interviewee must wear a loud Hawaiian shirt?

..and you are meeting Brian Wilson this Friday? Good news for Beach Boys fans ahead I think Jon. Whatever the project.
Could this Hollywood Bowl comment of yours come into the discussion?
I know for a fact that the Hollywood Bowl would love to host a Beach Boys reunion concert. A member of my family holds a perfect position within the Hollywood Bowl organization to make this happen if the BB's wanted it. In fact, this party specifically reached out to me last year to see if I could somehow assist them in gauging interest within the BB's family.
