Forgetting the alcohol/ Mike thing for a minute, I just googled ‘Hit Songs 1988’. As well as Kokomo, ‘Simply Irresistible’ by Robert Palmer came up. Just how successful would a aftershave or cologne be named after a 35 year old song? Every year hundreds of products are released using much more relevant artists and they still fail. The young liquor buyer will see a name that means nothing to them with a picture of some old guy who they don’t know and walk right on pass. I also don’t think October is the season for this product and I doubt it will be around next summer. Just my 2 cents.

More members of Brian's band are tagged on the post. Darian is at the keyboard, percussionist Jim Laspesa is there. I'd bet there's some sort of BW project going on. Kind of doubt it would be an album, but who knows?
Might be bringing back his annual Christmas song?

Club Kokomo. The brand I thought was dead is now back on life support! https://clubkokomospirits.com/Crafted and produced in San Diego, California and founded by Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Club Kokomo Spirits focuses on providing consumers with a top shelf sensory visit to the islands of the Caribbean. Years ago Mike enjoyed a particularly well-made Mojito as he hummed the chorus of his co-authored hit song Kokomo. His penchant for wordplay took over as he uttered the word, “Kokomojito”. Ever since, Mike’s dream has been to share the spirit of Kokomo to the world. From that original state of mind to a present day reality, Welcome to Club Kokomo.

. But this time I caved, having just ordered the Limited Super Deluxe vinyl edition simply for the lithographs and Holland book (call me a sucker), and I will no doubt get the CDs for most of my actual listening.
I think you have answered the question yourself. It’s all about maximising the return for a business and I don’t think the Beach Boys and the label are any different.

Interested if any ok had to be given by Jagger/ Richards over the inclusion of Jumpin Jack Flash ‘Live’?
Given the amount of live covers the Stones have done over their time, is the process complicated?
Thanks
In terms of audio releases, as long as proper royalties are paid (which of course the label handles) and the song has already been published/copyrighted, no clearances or permissions are needed. Audio releases like this just pay a flat royalty. Where it gets complicated is the rights to put a song into any sort of video/film. There, permission needs to be sought and the owner of the song can ask for any amount they want. A million dollars per second if they want. So if they had a video/film of the BBs doing the song, then that would become immensely more expensive. Though, in that case they'd only have to pay for the composition, whereas movies that want to use the song *and* the original Stones recording would have two levels of negotiation/payment involved. This explains why "tribute" albums are plentiful, but putting songs (and even more so original recordings) into movies and TV becomes much more involved. There are more Beatles (or whomever) tribute/covers albums then there are movies and TV shows with Beatles songs in them. This is why a Beach Boys documentary or concert video/film can also become a costly proposition; the BBs and their various entities own some of the recordings and some of the publishing, but not all. This is one of the reasons something like that "Live at Knebworth 1980" DVD or the 50th Anniversary Tour "Live in Concert" Blu-ray only have partial setlists. Thanks HeyJude. Unlikely to see JJF in any Box Set video promotion then. 😉

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Revealing Interview

For someone who has praised TM and positivity for over 50 years, Mike sure gives a negative interview. ☹️
Even though he repeatedly praised Brian as a vocal arranger in that interview, and a great collaborator. Even though he said Carl sang Good Vibrations beautifully. If I hadn't listened to the interview myself, I would have thought - going by the response here - that Mike spent 15 minutes saying "Carl smoked himself to death, Dennis drank himself to death, and Brian is basically comatose today because of all the drugs he did". Actually, I think if Mike were to really let loose on how he feels about working with Brian today, you guys would be even more enraged. I'm reminded of a comment Carl made about Brian back in 1981: "he doesn't hurt anybody, but he likes to hide a lot". That's why he has people around him to handle the stuff he doesn't like doing. Or maybe I got that quote wrong; maybe it was "he doesn't hide anybody, but he likes to hurt a lot" I stand by the post LS. I think you know I refer to interviews in general rather than just this one.
