1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Australia TV Interview...Trouble in Paradise on: June 18, 2018, 10:55:20 AM
The next morning, Carl Wilson was forced to publicly apologise for his behaviour, claiming he’d taken two Valium that day, and had consumed two Mai Tais that evening.

I find it incredulous that anyone would have the balls to order a Maitai in Perth. ‘Whadayaaaa....?’  Grin

Standard question for any Australian interviewer. ‘What about that Perth concert in 1978?’

Seems he is. See the Australian interview thread.

Nothing new really but apparently Carl and Dennis took heroin in Perth in 78,  ‘World Tour’ mentioned on the back of the RSO album (believe it when I see it) Brian still in hospital.

Three shows with each getting a slot? I don’t know the format unfortunately.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike, Bruce and Al Host 3 Part Radio Series From Today on: June 16, 2018, 05:39:38 PM
Just noticed this. It’s the 17th in Australia today so figure it out for your location. Will post a link for any replay if possible. Unlikely to be anything new but the group does seem to be hitting the radio airwaves a lot at the moment. Go Jerry!

The Beach Boys are set to host a series of specials on smoothfm from this Sunday June 17.

Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and Al Jardine from the iconic band are hosting one-hour specials from 4pm each Sunday.

Band co-founder Love returns to smoothfm having hosted his own show back in 2015.

This time he teams up with Johnston and Jardine to chat about their 57-year history and their new album The Beach Boys with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to share with our fans in Australia and we really appreciate the time we are spending on smoothfm,” said the band.

“It’s the greatest way to really get in depth into the songs and what you feel about them and what inspired them, and all kinds of different things can come out on radio.”

The Beach Boys are just the latest in a who’s who of music legends to present on the channel including Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Elton John and Blondie.

The Beach Boys will be heard on smooth 95.3 Sydney, smooth 91.5 Melbourne and on smoothfm DAB+ from June 17 to July 1 from 4-5pm.

All who were involved in this project should be fired.

Sadly this album cements the fact The Beach Boys are has beens.

I think you have missed the point. Despite all the talk of the album as ‘art’ and ‘new audiences’, it boils down to making money at the end of the day. I don’t think any legacy artist thinks any differently.

It’s the 8th here so yes, probably after 12.

Here’s a link that works for me as a test.

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Baywatch OST - \ on: June 07, 2018, 02:16:45 PM
Just to clarify. The way I read it was Carl wasn’t at the shoot, Dave was. Brian wasn’t at the Cerritos show that night, Carl probably was.
Reading the pro shot thread, Dave did attend ‘some’ shows at that time so ‘may’ have been at Cerritos. It would have been weird saying ‘we need you at the Baywatch shoot as a band member but not onstage later as the real thing.’

Am I on the right track with this?  Huh
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Album Discussion Thread on: June 07, 2018, 01:20:08 PM
Album now on Spotify here in NZ. Will have a listen soon.

Edit: Individual songs on YouTube also.

Another story, with news for fans of vinyl...

Jardine will also celebrate the re-release of his 2010 album "A Postcard from California" on vinyl in two months.

"We just closed the deal today," he said. "Vinyl is popular again. So it will be great for people to be able to hold the record in their hands and see the artwork on the cover."

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Times article: The Beach Boys — yes, they’re back on: June 05, 2018, 03:09:34 AM
This?

Asked how his bandmates have changed, Jardine says, "Mike has taken it upon himself to carry the flag for the group. Come hell or high water, he's gonna be the last man standing. It's his purpose in life just to be there. Brian's given him this wonderful, amazing opportunity. The lead singer always has the power, in any organization. He develops this condition we call LSD – lead-singer disease." He says this with a laugh, not with resentment. "Mike never played any instruments other than the little bit on the saxophone, so out of necessity he invented himself. He created himself as the lead singer."

While the video for the TWGMTR single had every beach cliche going, the quality was pretty high IMO.

I also thought the various reunion shorts were well done also.

Oops, misread the thread title, thought it said Summer in Paradise back on the Billboard 200.

I think it ‘sold’ 200!  Grin

First review in.....A positive.

The Beach Boys With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra:
The Beach Boys With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
(UMC/Virgin 6765746)

There are few catalogues more beloved than that of The Beach Boys, and subjecting their iconic songs to symphonic makeovers adding new arrangements from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – conducted by Steve Sidwell & Sally Herbert under the production of Don Reedman & Nick Patrick – is a bold move, even though it has paid off handsomely for similar projects revitalising the catalogues of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison. 17 tracks are included, spanning the years 1964 to 1988, and they have won the unanimous approval of The Beach Boys themselves, with Brian Wilson ‘proud and humbled’, Mike Love judging the project ‘a phenomenal thing’ and Bruce Johnston complementing ‘the beautiful fairy dust of the orchestra’. As one who came to the project with mixed feelings, I am pleased to report that overall, it seems to have worked well. I particularly enjoyed the treatment given to the collection’s earliest song Fun Fun Fun, whose original surf guitar intro now follows a lush orchestral intro, which then melts into it. 1968 hit Darlin’ is also given extra depth and resonance by an intelligent and sweeping arrangement that envelops the band’s classic harmonies and adds extra sparkle. The already symphonic elegance of God Only Knows and Good Vibrations is probably less well served, especially the latter, whose instant familiarity is held at bay by a superfluous 25 second intro, and whose textured soundscape is a little compromised. I would personally rather hear the tracks as originally recorded but as an alternative it’s fine – and anything that brings new converts to the music of The Beach Boys has to be good

Is there a reason this thread is promoted to the top of the board despite no posts for over a day? Just curious.

I guess we take what we can get and thanks for reminding me about that NPR recording. I think it was mentioned back in the day but DIA and Isn’t It Time we’re just the 2011 re-recording and album version.

It would be great if someone could do a ‘best of’ fan mix. (NPR, Chiba,  BBC Radio 2, Live Album etc) to get most, if not all the songs of the tour. Come on you young tech wizards. Help us old geezers out!  LOL
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys in Glastonbury comeback talks after not so Good Vibrations since 2012 on: May 19, 2018, 06:22:29 PM
I agree with KDS. As long as Mike is "still tourin'" with his band, there will be no such release of a C50 project. The reasons should be obvious.

And for another reason, in terms of marketing and potential audiences and buyers, the more casual fans who bought the official C50 live release will possibly not want to buy another, thinking they already have a live C50 release. Think outside the more invested fan base of diehards who follow this stuff daily, and the reasons there will be clear too.

Just look at those last shows of C50, played in the UK, and put the quality of those performances up against the other stuff including the current Beach Boys tours. If they released a full, complete show from that leg of the tour when the band kicked it up a few notches and delivered some amazing moments on stage, the same issues and questions that pretty much shattered and split the fanbase starting in Fall 2012 and linger today will come back and I doubt certain parties would want to revisit all that again.

I think someone in 2012/13 suggested the footage from London or the Hollywood Bowl if unused (as now appears to be the case) could have been given to the touring party as a thank you gift. If so, feel free to share!  LOL

A new album is hypothetical as the same story tells of Mikes preference to tour. A Brian story from last year (unsure where) said he wouldn’t do a C50 style tour again. Basically both a tour and album are off the table IMO.

But anyway, TWGMTR was 50% magical for me because of Brian’s songs. The rest? Meeh! Given time and commitment I still think a PS2 would be feasible. Low sales but a slow burner. For that reason labels wouldn’t be interested.

Count me in for a reunion.  I'd like them to take one last shot at it in the studio and the road.  I would buy a ticket.

I’d like them to take one last shot in the studio only.
