I love this stuff.  It's crazy that this is only a bonus track.
27  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What songs do you want to hear in the NPP tour setlist? on: March 29, 2015, 03:34:29 PM
Since he's touring with Al and Blondie, I think it's a safe bet that they'll be playing "Sail Away" at every show.  I'm going to guess that most or all of the other songs where Al Jardine is a guest vocalist will also be played.

I'm not so sure about the other songs on the new album, mostly because of the guest vocalists.  There are quite a few of those songs I'd like to hear live, but some of them might require some re-imagining without the guest vocalists.

Apart from the new songs, I'm guessing "Wild Honey" and "Sail On, Sailor" will be played a fair amount in addition to the usual suspects ("Good Vibrations," "California Girls" et. al.).  But here are my probably unrealistic personal wishes:

"Aren't You Glad"--No reason they'd play this one, but as it's probably my favorite song…
"Busy Doin' Nothin'"--I think Al could do a good lead on this one now
"Time to Get Alone"--Blondie lead.  Maybe a crazy idea, and probably unlikely in the extreme as Brian doesn't play this one.
"I'll Bet He's Nice"--As with "Aren't You Glad," this one will always be on my wish list.  It also has a nice trade-off for three lead vocalists, and I think Brian doing Dennis' lead, Al doing Brian's, and Blondie doing Carl's middle-eight would be nice.
"Strange World"

I'd also really like to hear "Runaway Dancer" and "Saturday Night," but without the guest vocalists I'm not sure they'll play those.  Especially "Runaway Dancer."
28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: LISTEN TO THE LAST SONG & ON THE ISLAND!! BBC RADIO on: March 29, 2015, 12:46:12 AM
I really like "On the Island"--very nice and laid back.  I think Runners is spot on with the "Busy Doin' Nothin'" vibe this has.  Great choice of collaborators for this one.

I may be about to get myself into trouble, but "The Last Song" is the first song I've heard from this album that I'm not really into.  Maybe I'll warm up to it after a couple more listens but for now I find it… cloying.

Furever
Kokomeow (we can henceforth use the term "Kokomeowist" instead of "Kokomaoist")

Like "The Right Time," this is one that seems merely pleasant and enjoyable on the surface but on closer listen reveals much more depth in its harmonies and instrumentation.

I promised myself I wouldn't get my hopes too high for this new album until I heard the whole thing, but that's awfully hard to do at this point.  To my ears, everything released so far has been terrific.
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interview/Article - Vulture.com; If Your Dad Were Brian Wilson... on: March 27, 2015, 12:13:45 AM
So I was surprised by a couple of things in this interview--notably the fact that he wrote Runaway Dancer in 1998 before recording it with "whatshisname" (Sebu).  I'd assumed that that one was (a) written more recently and (b) was collaborative with Sebu from the get-go because it's such an unusual style for Brian but is stylistically similar to Capital Cities.  It would be interesting to hear if there was a demo from around the time it was written to see how much it sounds like the version we have now.

I'm a bit confused as to why they backed out with Frankie Ocean because Ocean wanted to do rap.  What kind of music did they think he wanted to do when they first contacted him?

Anyone else not able to load the video?  Whenever I try to click on it, it says "This video is private."

Aren't You Glad!
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Preview No Pier Pressure On Google Play! on: February 18, 2015, 02:53:41 PM
So, five Al leads/co-leads, eh? A quick lookthrough of the def vocal credits list done by this board some years back gives that there never was a BB studio album with more than that. (But Surf's Up, MIU and Still Cruisin' have five as well).  Cool Guy

I was also just thinking that it was kind of funny that the upcoming Brian Wilson solo album has more Al leads than the last Beach Boys album did.  I'm glad, though--his voice sounds great.
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Preview No Pier Pressure On Google Play! on: February 18, 2015, 04:27:27 AM
This is totally different from what I was expecting.  It's very strong production-wise, as all of Brian's recent work has been, but he really seems to be playing around with different musical styles.  I'll wait until I hear the album in full to decide whether it's the best of Brian's solo career, but from the previews it definitely sounds like the most adventurous.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's 1975 recording of \ on: February 11, 2015, 03:33:27 AM
Great news, but why not stick these on the US/Euro/AU versions as well?

It's generally cheaper for Japanese buyers to import albums from other countries.  The sole reason for Japan-exclusive bonus tracks is to give them incentive to buy their domestic pressings.

I don't know if this is a factor as well, but due to the prevalence of CD rental stores here, very few people actually buy CDs, it seems.  Unless they're specifically trying to push their favorite band's newest release to the top of the charts.
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Capitol to Release Brian Wilson's 'No Pier Pressure' April 7: press release on: January 29, 2015, 02:30:02 PM
I'll get the Deluxe version.  Why put the bonus tracks in the middle of the album?

I was wondering the same thing.
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love: Q&A request on: January 29, 2015, 12:47:07 AM
Would he do a Q&A on the blueboard immediately afterwards?
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did we learn at the Q&A? on: January 27, 2015, 02:37:38 PM
I really enjoyed the questions everyone asked, and found it interesting that Brian said Van Dyke was his favorite collaborator. This may have been a dig at Mike, but I liked that answer!
If he just wanted a dig at Mike, why not answer Joe Thomas or Scott Bennett, his most recent collaborators? I think he meant what he said.

I would have first laughed and then felt very depressed if he had answered "Joe Thomas."  But I liked his answer, as well as VDP's response.

Thank you, guitarfool (and Billy and Smile-Holland) for setting this up so that we can post our questions ahead of time.  I was seriously considering getting up at 4 AM for this session, which would be rather brutal for a weekday.
41  Smiley Smile Stuff / BRIAN WILSON Q & A / How does your original conception of a song change in the process of production? on: January 25, 2015, 11:47:51 PM
Hi Brian,

Since you are (rightfully) famous as both a composer and a producer of music, I was wondering how integrated the two steps were in your creative process.  How does your style as a producer influence the way that you compose music (or vice versa)?

Thanks, and I'm really looking forward to your new album!

42  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The 1980's Appreciation Lounge on: January 22, 2015, 03:57:37 PM
R.E.M.'s first five albums: Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Life's Rich Pageant, Document (also the EP Chronic Town).  With the exceptions of Automatic for the People and New Adventures in Hi-fi, hardly anything else in their discography even comes close.
John Lennon/Yoko Ono: Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey.  I like the homespun quality of Lennon's songs here and prefer them to some of his more famous work in the 1970s; I like quite a few of the Ono songs as well.
George Harrison: Someone already said Cloud 9, but I'll throw the wrongly vilified Gone Troppo.  Also The Traveling Wilburys Volume One.
Stevie Wonder: Hotter Than July and Characters.  Admittedly a much less impressive decade for Stevie than the 70s was, but these are still two great albums.  In Square Circle has some pretty great music on it, too, but quite a bit of mediocre music as well.
Marvin Gaye: In Our Lifetime and Midnight Love.  The former may be my favorite Marvin Gaye album, (particularly "Love Party," dance music for the apocalypse).
Van Dyke Parks: Jump! A great blend of musical styles and one of the most effectively narrative albums I've heard.

And then, of course, the pinnacle of musical achievement, Lookin' Back with Love.
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: Daro thread pulled ? on: January 22, 2015, 06:22:36 AM
This is so interesting!  Some of you have questions regarding exact dates/times etc?  You obviously know your stuff, but how often does a fan know more about the details of their idol than the idol themselves does?

You'd be surprised. One of the band - no names, no pack drill - was, until someone played him the album in question, convinced that a certain song was never released - which it was - and swore black was white that he didn't sing the lead on it - which he did.

Did he forget that he sang the lead vocal on it when he re-recorded it for his own solo album as well?
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: Darro thread pulled ? on: January 20, 2015, 07:22:57 AM
Also, I see a lot of comments about what a despicable human being Loren Daro is, lower than the low etc. - pretty heavy stuff. Really? Because he called someone he once knew a cow and is willing to explain his reasons? Because he called Brian an idiot savant?? Because he laughed whilst describing Brian's bad trip on Beautiful Dreamer???

All those posters who are such a great judge of character and who are able so confidently to assess Daro's moral worth - have you ever met or spent time with the guy? Again I see a lot of hypocrisy and double standards here.

Nobody on this thread that I've noticed has said that he's lower than low.  What they said is that he took the low road.  That's a very big difference.  Saying someone is "lower than low" is a judgment of character; saying that someone "took the low road" (or the London underground or whatever) is a judgment of specific actions.  In this case, those actions are ones that everyone who saw the thread witnessed.

And call it a double standard if you like, but when someone shows up and says that everything we've been told about Beach Boys history by everyone else is wrong because everyone else is a liar and then starts spewing ad hominem attacks against everyone he can think of in lieu of providing evidence for his new history, my instincts tell me not to trust him.  That in addition to the fact that he was responding to criticisms that no one on this board was making until he showed up and began "responding" to them.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: Darro thread pulled ? on: January 20, 2015, 06:14:51 AM
Wonder if it's worth directing any questions direct to Daro's blog then posting the responses here, just minus the defamatory stuff?

Would there be anything left once you edited out the defamatory stuff?
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: Darro thread pulled ? on: January 20, 2015, 02:22:58 AM
I was also a bit surprised to see it gone.  Not that I think removing the thread, or at least closing it, was a bad idea; he did, after all, start spewing false information and ad hominem attacks (against Marilyn Wilson, of all people!) from his first post.  I was just a bit surprised that it vanished without warning; for a moment, I wondered if I'd imagined the whole thing.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hi from Brian on: January 19, 2015, 04:11:07 PM
Hi it's Brian. Just wanted to say hi. Exciting news soon. Love & Mercy.

The fact that you're posting on here is already exciting news.  Can't wait to hear this upcoming exciting news, though.
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Have Any Pet Sounds Piano Demos Surfaced... on: January 19, 2015, 02:22:53 AM
Interesting wider point - given their prodigious output in the 60s, there are very, very, very few demos of anything, period. That we know of.

This is perhaps an ignorant question, but is it possible that nobody foresaw a need to record demos, or to keep those recordings, because of the relatively short turnaround time between writing, recording, and release?  And that people (not sure who) only decided it was important after Brian's contributions to the band became less reliable?  For example, perhaps the reason someone thought to record the Love You piano demos was that they weren't sure Brian would see the songs through to the recording and thought they might need the demos if they decided to record the songs without his input later.

Just a thought.

Ooh, burn

I'm surprised this is the first response you made here

It's all just very silly.
Glad to know you still care about me, though.

I care about everyone  Grin
Even me?? Cry Cry Cry

Even though you annoy the heck out of me, halblaineisgood, you can't be too bad.  After all, we both can say that the BB are the main reason we're here right  Wink?

Perhaps this purrito will change your mind!

Must you go offtopic and derail this thread?

Anyway, it would have been great if a few Dennis songs were added onto In Concert. As much as I like the album, aside from the newer Holland-era material, the majority of the album consists of earlier pre-SMiLE songs. I wouldn't say drop tem entirely, but at the same time focus more on their then-contemporary material, or even more stuff from 20/20-Surf's Up. At least it wasn't exactly old yet in 1973.

Thank you.  It sucks this happens so often.

And yea you would think that they would've at least included "Forever" on there.

I don't think it's that surprising of a setlist: it focuses on the songs everyone knows them for and songs from their latest album.  Much as we all like Friends and Sunflower here, I don't think it's too surprising that they didn't include anything from albums that were a few years old and didn't sell very well at their release.  I do agree, though, that which Holland tracks they decided to include on In Concert seems a little odd, and I, for one, prefer "Only With You" to all the songs that they did include except maybe "Sail, On Sailor."

On the other hand, we did get a nice recording of "Only With You" on Made in California last year.  In fact, even if it doesn't speak well to Dennis' recognition in his own time, the fact that four of the fifteen live tracks on the box set were Dennis songs is a pretty good indication of the fact that his music is getting the recognition it deserves from fans (and box set compilers) now.

Friends.  Would sure miss Sunflower, "Time to Get Alone," and "Til I Die," though.
