1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: December 02, 2021, 10:50:14 PM
I'm gonna say it, I wasn't blown away by this film. It was nice to see some "new" Brian today footage but aside from that it was pretty much a rehash of every other documentary out there. I'd really looked forward to this and was underwhelmed to say the least.

I know, I know - there's only so many ways you can regurgitate the same history but I thought this documentary was gonna be something different, new and up to date. More irrelevant  "talking heads" than there is Brian interaction (Nick Jonas? Come on, really?). I enjoyed watching Brian talk about Dennis and listening to POB for the "first" time, recording the new tune in the studio and I was really moved on Brian discovering that Jack Rieley had passed away some years ago, but that was it really.

Maybe the extras which I haven't seen yet will add some extra flavour but I really don't think hardcore fans are missing anything by not seeing it.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys as part of a wedding on: May 17, 2020, 04:53:27 PM
My wife and I got married on April Fool's Day so we left the church to "Why Do Fools Fall In Love".

Our venue tables were named after our favourite albums so the top wedding party table was "Pet Sounds"

Our first dance was "Wouldn't it Be Nice"

Sorry I've had to resort to this - I've used the search feature, Google etc before coming here.

Someone posted a while back that Brian is releasing a solo Best of this year (or at least that's what I remember reading here).

Is this true? Do we have any further details / track listing / label / formats etc?

Thanks,

Zander

Can I just say thanks to the Uploader - I actually had this Forrest Gump CD-Rom 20 years ago (?) and it never worked from day 1 so I have never been able to see this clip until now!

Was just about to post in the Insignificant Questions thread but searched Forrest Gump instead Smiley

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson biography due September 29th on: October 09, 2015, 03:30:40 AM
Really nice looking book but slightly disappointed.

Over 250 pages and the last 10 years of Carl's life are crammed into 2 pages! No content from immediate family members, so I suppose it's what you'd expect.

Love the thought of the Adult Child article - has there been a Spring article?

What about the Hawaii trip in '67? The run of shows in the 70's where Brian took Mike's place?

The Bedroom demos from the 70's?

just throwing ideas about...  Smiley

12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tony Asher guests with Mike, Bruce and Dave on: July 15, 2015, 05:13:20 PM

Couple of points. Mike also said in 12 that the C50 band shouldn't be over exposed and he could be up for getting back together in a "few years" or the like. I have said since the end of the C50 that PS50 may work. Some form of celebration should be in order especially as Brian has hinted he is pulling back. Probably not to the scale of the C50 but a few select shows.

It would be nice if the UK was given a few nationwide concerts (Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham) rather than just 2 London shows as on the C50 - that really was "select" back in 2012!

Is there a boot or live footage which features an acapella version of "America The Beautiful" as featured for a nano-second in the Endless Harmony documentary? What years was this performed live?

Cheers folks...

Other than "All This Is That," are there any songs with Carl doing falsetto?

Surf's Up (1971) and live

IIRC, Glen was quick to correct an interviewer in Stomp who thought that he, rather than Carl, played the intro to "Fun, Fun, Fun."

Really? I KNEW I shouldn't have let me STOMP! subscription lag years ago...!
Anyone know what issue that was?

I've read it recently, can't tell you the issue number off hand but it was an oldie - possibly late 90's when Glen came to the UK promoting something...
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: striped shirts still in 65' on: April 14, 2014, 10:42:40 PM
The Beach Boys occasionally wore a thinner striped shirt in early '64 but the classic Kingston Trio type striped shirts  as seen on the cover of the Beach Boys Concert LP didn't appear until  summer '64, and they wore both blue and red variations of the striped shirt including a wider striped version, until fall '67 when they switched to the white suits.

They also had a yellow striped shirt, there's a small picture in the Greatest Single Ever edition of Mojo (1997?) - looks like they were on a TV show.

That picture in Mojo shows them wearing just plain yellow shirts, without stripes.

I wasn't far off then! I haven't seen that picture in years but I knew it featured yellow which I haven't seen anywhere else? Do we know what show that was from?

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Better Holland outtake: We Got Love or Hard Time? on: March 13, 2014, 04:13:49 PM
I really like Holland. But I think the album could be better.

Yeah, Hard Times was made after Holland was delivered. But I still prefer it over We Got Love, hands down!
And Carry Me Home is excellent as well, though I still prefer Hard Times. Though maybe it's because Carry Me Home sounds very incomplete and the quality of the bootleg is horrible.

What I'd change about Holland is adding the three songs mentioned, use the unreleased version of Big Sur instead of the bad one that made it to the final version, cut out Beaks Of Eagles (California Saga was so unnecessary!) and Steamboat, keep Sail On Sailor intact and remix and shorten every other remaining song!

Congratulations - you've just turned the band's best non-BW album into something that would majorly suck. As for "Hard Times" being recorded after Holland was delivered... since when did October 4th ever come after October 9th ?

Amen! Holland is amazing, We Got Love should be additionally added to it to make it even better...
