The term "pounded" has a few meanings in the States as well.
True! In this case, however...it means getting hit over and over again with jobs I don't have time to finish! I work in advertising. That said...the day is ALMOST over...and I've got "Love You" blasting over the speakers right now...so things are shaping up for the better!!!

I've been getting pounded at work today and the Boys have kept me company. I've listened to 20/20, Sunflower and Surf's Up and currently I'm into So Tough. I'll get through Holland before I'm done. Man, what a solid run of recordings. I know they've been mostly ignored by the general public and even many music fans...but these recordings represent a vital band...hitting on all cylinders. Yes...I could get nit picky and pull out a few clunkers...but by and large these are such great recordings. I know this has been said probably countless times before on this board...but it's worth saying again!!!

It sounds like I need to look around a little more! The local Best Buy did not have a single one. I was in the local Barnes & Noble about a week ago...but I couldn't drag the little guy past the "toy area" without him throwing a fit...so I never got to the back of the store...which is where the music area is. I'll try and make an effort to hunt around a little bit this weekend. The Milwaukee area really suffers from a lack of good, independent record shops. The Exclusive Company is the last real independent left. I used to just about live there in the 1990s when I was a teenager...but like many Americans...I've gotten "lazy" as music has become so easy to obtain digitally. Thinking about it now...there is something lost when you think about how it used to be...rushing out to the record shop as soon as it opened when a new record was released (or cutting class!). Now...too often I just roll out of bed...open the laptop and load up Amazon.

Just curious...but has anyone actually seen physical copies of the new remasters in any actual stores?? I'm in Milwaukee...and I'll admit I haven't had much chance to really look around (two small children!)...but I've made an effort to look for them whenever I'm somewhere compact discs are sold and I've not seen a single copy. I'll admit that I buy 98% of my music digitally these days...but something like this is a case where I'd want the physical recording in hand. I'd prefer not to order from Amazon...as I'd rather support a local business...but so far...that has been fruitless. I'll eventually just give in and order them online.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the band missing the oportunity for a release timed to coincide with the holiday shopping season. I don't know if this is a function of a decision they made or if the matter was taken out of their hands entirely. If the latter, you'd think the band and their representatives might be pretty bummed, no? January just seems like such a queer time to put out as sizeable a release as this is purported to be (as opposed to just a few weeks sooner when folks are more flush with cash and are actively shopping for gifts).
I made the same point a couple of months ago. Why would they want to miss out on the holiday shopping season? Let's release it in January when everyone is tapped out...

What do people think of 'When Girls Get Together'?
Personally I find it very rich in its texture and the lyrics do have significant meaning (though corny at times). I really hope they release a clean 1970 version. IMO the overdubs made for KTSA didn't do the song justice. Do people agree on that or differ?
I've always felt that it didn't sound like it fit into the context of KTSA. You can tell it's an older song.

Man, nobody has mentioned "Life Is For the Living", yet! I don't know why...but whenever I hear it...I feel happy! Maybe it's the jaunty Dick Reynolds horn charts...or Carl's swingin' lead! Or maybe it's because I can imagine the look of horror that must have crossed the face of Michael Edward Love the first time he heard it!!

As was previously mentioned... it was never officially released. The chances of it even existing in the digital realm are slim to none... especially since most BB fans consider it to be a piece of garbage. I have a VHS copy taped off of the television when it originally aired somewhere in our basement. That said... good luck in your search... but personally... I think you might be chasing your tail. I just don't think it's out there to be had.

I know he ended up as the Gotham City police commissioner.
Hah! Can't remember the author off of the top of my head... but there was just a book released about "the Wrecking Crew" and their was an entire chapter devoted to Gordon... much of which talked about his actual work in the studio. Might be a good starting point.

My mom and dad went to see a free concert in a county park (the county park system puts on free concerts during the summer) this past summer. In fact, it was the day before I went and saw the 50th Anniversary show. The show they saw was some outfit billing themselves as a Beach Boys tribute band and from the way my mom described it... it was absolutely horrid. Glad I didn't go!

Kickstarter could be an excellent route to go. You should look into it. As Mark said... you essentially collect donations from people to finance the book. I know of several musicians who have used similar approaches (not sure if it's the same site) and it's worked out great (Juliana Hatfield and Ben Folds Five). I would have to believe that there is another interest in the BB that you could raise the necessary funds... and with the world wide web... you can reach interested fans in all sorts of countries. I, for one, would love to kick in if you went this route. We've been blessed by several great, new BB books in recent years... and there is always room for another. I can think of few fan bases who care as deeply as Beach Boy fans!

Just to throw my two cents in...
This is probably more smoke than fire. I'm not saying that there aren't ill feelings going on between members of the band right now...but as has been mentioned many times before: this is the plan that was in place for after the reunion shows ended. More than anything else...this has just been poorly played from a PR standpoint...and the blame for that can be pointed at several factions.
Yes...from a personal standpoint...it would be sad if everything just returned to pre-2012 terms...but if that's what it is...I'm thankful we had this spring and summer. It was magical.
The biggest concern for me is time. They don't have a decade to "do their own thing" again. Heck...even five years is pushing it. I really hope that things are just being blown out of proportion and that behind-the-scenes things really aren't that fired up. I guess time will tell!

I did try to explain all this to people over at the Pollstar article ... which is the source for a lot of this crap. Don't know if it worked, though.
Someone just needs to post a version of this on every one of these stupid things. I'm a media person, and I hate the media at times like this ...
No one wants to listen to the truth and everyone wants to hate Mike Love. Yahoo! news, known world-round for their quality and dedication to the facts, are a more reputable sources than someone who's actually been following the story for half a year now. Seriously, some kind of statement needs to be issued over this. The people behind these "stories" have sunk really, really low in order to attract attention to themselves. You are exactly right. Someone from BRI needs to issue an actual statement to set the record (whatever it is) straight. It's kind of sad that after all of the "good" Beach Boys stuff we've been blessed with in 2012...this is how the year is ending??

Good point. The person who would stand to lose the most is Al. Brian has proven himself to be a very viable solo commodity. There is no reason to think that he couldn't simply revert to what he was doing last year... and the year before... and on and on. Al Jardine, by himself, isn't the live draw of Brian Wilson or even of the Mike/Bruce lead Beach Boys touring band. In fact, it would seem (to me, at least) that Brian holds most of the cards. Brian can command higher ticket prices than anyone else (correct?). Mike and Bruce WITH Brian could command higher ticket prices than they could alone. The issue is whether or not Brian wants to do that.

Mike has never shied away from the fact that he likes his current tours to be quick, dirty and cheap. Adding Brian and Al (and even Dave) would definitely add to the expense. That said...they would be able to charge more for tickets and play larger venues. The last time I saw the touring band was for free at a local county fair.

As someone who has struggled with mental illness (mild compared to someone like Brian...but a struggle none-the-less) this thread interests me. No, I don't think Dennis was bipolar. Brian is, Dennis is not...but Dennis clearly had his own mental demons. It's hard to pin-point what kind of diagnosis he would have been given had he actually been treated by a mental healthcare professional.

I'd think Brian is in a good spot...he's going to collect touring revenue from the Mike and Bruce Show AND he can still go out and do his own thing...with the possibility of still working with Mike and Bruce again. Does Al have a similar agreement? Does he collect a percentage of the touring band's revenue? Dave kind of gets lost in the shuffle. It's really sad that after all these years they just can't let it go. Why does there still have to be so much drama? It's really too bad. It's a fine line in regards to the touring band. Mike puts on a good show. His current band is good. It's a genuinely fun experience to catch him live...but is it the Beach Boys? I remember the last time I saw them live pre-reunion and while I was having a great time (heck, it was summer...we were outside...and the crowd was really into it)...I couldn't help but think wow...Brian Wilson is not on stage. Al Jardine is not on stage. Carl and Dennis have both passed away. It took a bit of the shine off of the evening for me. Maybe the real question is what is their legacy worth? Is it enough for Mike and Bruce to simply carry on the name...churning out show-after-show...or does their legacy demand more? Is it sacred enough that it shouldn't be treated as a commodity? Should there be some sort of understanding between the surviving members in regards to everything they have created...all the good memories...the incredible music...and how they want to be remembered?

I've said it before...but I almost have to laugh when I read all of this nonsense. They have been one of the longest running soap operas in rock history. Their story is full of petty squabbles...backhanded business practices...mud-slinging...court battles...and on and on. The fact that they've managed to continue making incredible music (most of the time) throughout is pretty amazing. A part of me thinks just wrapping it up cleanly after the reunion tour would have been too easy for this group...too out of character. Personally, I wish they could have just truly buried the hatchet and gone out on a high note...but if this is not going to be the case (and it looks that way right now) then maybe collapsing back into name-calling and finger-pointing truly is how they're supposed to end. Very sad...but when have they ever done anything cleanly?

It's just sad that they're willing to apparently throw away all of the goodwill they generated through the reunion tour. Everything has to come to an end at some point. The question is do you push on until the engine finally blows or do you retire gracefully to the museum. The group has been presented with a golden chance to retire gracefully. For years we've had Mike and Bruce, Brian and Al (with David truly being the "lost" Beach Boy). In 2012...all of the differing camps were brought together and the Beach Boys lived again (as much as they could without Carl and Dennis, that is). They released a solid LP...they put on a solid tour. Let's face it...the clock is ticking. They're not going to be able to do this for ten more year...even five starts to really push it. Do they want to go back to the Mike and Bruce show...and the Brian Wilson show...and the Al Jardine show...all touring by themselves? They all have a right to do what they want. Personally...I wouldn't mind if they'd go the route of the Stones. Let it be the Beach Boys ONLY when the five living members decide to get together for a tour or an LP. Anything else should be done under a solo banner. If they had not gotten back together this year I'd have absolutely no problem with things remaining the same...but because they did get back together and because they did remind us what the Beach Boys could still be...it's going to be a bummer if this is it. Of course, if they end up getting back together again they could still make this right...but knowing the history of the band and considering the ages involved...they cannot afford another period of bad blood. Time just won't allow it and what we saw in 2012 will be it.
