76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate universe: Mike chooses Scientology over TM in 1968 on: January 08, 2016, 11:18:57 AM
I only know of one pop group that embraced Scientology: Canadians Edward Bear, known in the US for their 1972 hit "Last Song". Their followup album in '73 has a blurb for Scientology on the back.

I see Chick Corea has been a Scientologist since 1968:

The Incredible String Band got into it in the late '60s too.
77  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rocky Pamplin book about The Beach Boys? on: December 29, 2015, 04:43:01 PM
But the real reason, he confessed to me, was because he didn't want to go into the recording studio with the Beach Boys... said that whole thing gave him bad vibes!

I would certainly be interested in hearing more about this, if you'd care to expand on it at all.

Blame it on Microsoft.

This is often a fair policy, and provides me with a great excuse for my earlier comments.  On the minus side, I now find that I am substantially less excited by the new Beach Boys CD.
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BEACH BOYS’ PARTY! Uncovered and Unplugged on: December 29, 2015, 03:21:46 PM
My favourite aspect is the fact that all of the dialogue tracks are listed on the sleeve as "dialogue" in the version of English that all good British citizens (except Andrew Doe for some no doubt important reason) use.  Please tell me that this is how it's printed worldwide (it certainly seems to appear that way on the sleeve graphic shown on Amazon.com) and that it's not just a regional variation, for it has made me quite happy in my foolish UK-centric way.

Mind you, the back cover does also say "One Kiss Lead To Another" and is perhaps over-insistent regarding Mike's vocals on "Alley Oop", so maybe it will not be winning any awards for Proofreading Pedantry.

As for the musical contents, I like the stripped-down album a lot, support the release of archival projects, and am glad this exists, but I'm going to confess that I haven't enjoyed the session material as much as I'd hoped to.  Burn me at the stake for saying it if you must, but I did find that I tired of the Boys' company after a while, especially when they were mucking about.  Possibly a sense of humour mismatch.
I expect I've made the mistake myself, but 'dialogue' is the proper spelling for British and American English, for now. I imagine Americans will use 'dialog' increasingly because of 'catalog' and 'dialog box.'

Wow, I'd got so used to seeing "dialog" everywhere that I never imagined that.  Certainly if you rip the CDs then all of the "dialogue" tracks get auto-titled as "dialog", so somebody should have a word.

81  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: BEACHB-oysters' (sand-corny) POETRY PEARLS - YULEtide-edit... on: December 28, 2015, 05:26:15 AM
The concert really did get a bad review----even from band members ("Brian might as well not have been there!")----but I loved every minute of it. So did this Japanese guy sitting next to me. He was a serious Wild Honey fan and I'll never forget the expression on his face when they launched into "I'd Love Just Once to See You"... (Jacques Cider was that evening's sponsor.)

I was at that one too, and to be honest I don't remember it being that bad either (though I certainly did partake in the silly cider, which may have made a difference).  "I'd Love Just Once To See You" was a particular delight (though I think I was the only person in my immediate vicinity who knew it).  I've been to worse, anyway.
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Randell Kirsch on: December 26, 2015, 03:38:10 PM
It's the Yoko thing and it's inane. All the people around them have influence on their decisions; hopefully they respect their wives and their wives have influence on their decisions; but in the end, their decisions are their own. Even if their decisions are to do exactly as their wives say, it's still their decision.
Jacqueline Love would only be responsible if she was in a management position that would allow her to hire and fire band members.
And I agree that both seem to be doing well so both seem to be making pretty good decisions.

Quite. Sadly, it happens with almost every male musician -- their wives get the blame for anything the fans don't like. I've seen it happen in the Monkees and Zappa fandoms too.

Oh God, it's completely toxic in Zappa world, you're quite right.  And for whatever my anecdotal evidence is worth, I met Gail (may she rest in peace) and she was absolutely charming.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Workshop on: December 25, 2015, 06:47:41 AM
To add my own 2-cents, where if anywhere do you think this was supposed to go? After Fire like Carol Kaye said or perhaps after Wonderful? That poor girl's innocence was taken from her...she needs someone to be around to pick up the pieces of her broken heart, amiright? Can anyone think of another way that isnt how it's done on BWPS/TSS? Just looking for new ideas.

The BWPS sequence may not be authentic, but I adore the "I Wanna Be Around" / "Workshop" / "Vega-Tables" sequence beyond reason.  I recall the feeling of sheer delight the suddenly-appearing intro of "Vega-Tables" stirred in me when I first heard it at one of the RFH Smile concerts.  And there's something profoundly satisfying about following the song that begins "I wanna be around" with the song that begins "I'm gonna be 'round", the latter resolving the longing of the former.  I'm sure this was nobody's plan during the original sessions, but I love it and I will not be moved on this.
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: ***ANNOUNCEMENT***- New Mod/Rules on: December 19, 2015, 01:27:52 AM
A quick query about the rules.  When a poster quotes another poster, but alters the quote to say something different (whether for malicious or comedic purposes), is that an offence?  I'm sure that at least one of the moderators has said it is in the past*, but it's not in either the old or the new rules as written.  If doing this will lead to sanctions, could this please be written down, and the parameters laid out?

* Found it:

A very eloquent and gracious post. I'm impressed.

Really, really nice. I'm proud that Mike wrote such a nice thing about his cousin.

Look out - nothing sends this board into meltdown faster than when Mike Love says anything about anything.

Fixed that for you Grin

DON'T EDIT QUOTES OR YOU'LL BE BANNED WITH FIRE

Sooooo true. Kinda amusing that when runners has edited people's posts he gets banned, but I've seen so many other people do that on this board without a peep from the mods. Interesting.

runnersdialzero recently wasn't banned, but warned a few times not to do that again. And the one time he as actually banned for doing so was for a logical reason. Btw, that ban only lasted for a few hours, iicc. After a short mod-discussing, it was changed in a warning as well.

But you're right, sweetdudejim, I probably didn't warn everyone who modified quotes (I miss a post here and there, you know), although in this case the only reason responding a little late is me being away for a few days. There is a difference though between someone modifying quotes with the obvious addition that it's meant to be a joke, or if it's not obvious at all and the original poster is clearly not amused by it.

But for equal treatment reasons I'll say it again:

@ zachrwolfe & MessOfHelp101: please do not modify quotes, even if it's meant to be funny.

Can't we just listen without all of the drama and snark?  Being polite and listening isn't condoning anything.

I just wanted to say that, while I normally disagree with absolutely everything you have to say, I think that this is right on, and I felt much the same when Lorren Daro was here.  It's important and interesting to hear about events from lots of different perspectives, even if you find some of them contemptible.

Guys, you don't need to rush out to hang Mr Pamplin.  He has plenty enough rope to do it himself.

87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Party unplugged and uncovered thats not on Unsurpassed Master 10 on: December 09, 2015, 01:37:31 PM
HULLY GULLY - there's an incredible out-take with plenty of riffing and improve, with the band singing "Peanut... peanut butter" in place of the regular chorus, which is great musically, and absolutely hilarious.

For those not in the know, "Peanut Butter" was a real song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJaw61RfTzQ

The "Come on take a lesson now" lyrics from 'Peanut Butter' Brian also sings in the song The Baker Man... Interesting how everything ties in together...

"Come on, take a lesson now" seems to be a common lyric of several essentially identical songs: "Hully Gully", "Peanut Butter" and indeed "Everybody Monkey" (by Freddy Cannon, of "Palisades Park" fame).  It must be part of the DNA.

This thread has inspired me to post "this is real music, not like Justin Bei Bar and Lady Ga Ga!" on every BB-related youtube video.  Got to fight the real fight.  If No Pier Pressure hasn't gone triple platinum and Joe Thomas isn't next in line for Dictator Of Earth by xmas day, then I'm calling shenanigans.

I'm calling "PaulTMA".  You were better on the radio.

Saw it this evening in London's fashionable London.  As a somewhat fussy person when it comes to film, I think I could have taken it half an hour shorter, but there are some truly remarkable performances in there, and oh my, those studio scenes, good Lord.  I'd say more but I see that it's currently the 'in' thing to maintain an air of aloof indifference.

Well Wait;  It's Wednesday here and it's already Friday  there?

Just the UK being ahead of the curve as usual.  In fact it was a private members-only strictly-by-invitation elitist insider old-boys-network nudge-nudge-wink-wink-say-no-more sort of an advance screening.  I'd feel smug about it if it weren't for the fact that everyone in the States saw the thing weeks ago.

When Brian played there in 2005, it was voted the set of the festival and drew an enormous crowd, some of whom were 'surfing' as he played.

Like, literally. Two dudes were crowd surfing... on actual surf boards ! Possibly the most bizarre thing I've ever seen at a festival.

I suppose it's too much to hope there is video?

Can't help with video, but as one of those "dudes" passed right behind my head I span round and took a photo.  Unfortunately you can't see the surfboard due to the angle, so you'll just have to take my word for it that she was standing on something.  I'd have taken more photos but I was too busy going hog wild.

I don't know what you do Clack, but I work in the industry and see "what's floating" in 2015 -- I've found to my surprise that nobody behind the scenes gives a s  hit about the things music fans think music makers / labels /publishers give a sh*t about. I absolutely love the Byrds, I wish that catalogue was worked better, but a band like Love, or the Springfield is on nobody's radar (that I've found) other than their fans.

Just another note: The band Calexico played the set before Brian, and they did a very cool thing: They dedicated their cover of Love's "Alone Again Or" to Brian. They have a trumpet player, and that song was/is a perfect match for them.

Just something that jumped out at me.  No disrespect meant to Howie.
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: One good album of the 2nd half of the 70s: on: May 14, 2015, 01:09:52 AM
Taking tracks from 76 thru 79, my list would be: 1 back home 2 let us go on this way 3 roller skating child 4 johnny carson 5 shes got rhythm 6 pitter patter 7 good timin 8 shortenin bread 9 keepin the summer alive 10 some of your love 11 school day 12 sunshine.

And if they'd released that, you'd be posting 50 times a week until the end of time to tell us that if we really thought about it, we'd see that this isn't a proper album because it's just a collection of rehashed older songs and cover versions, and that the only real Beach Boys albums are the ones from Surfin' USA to Holland, even the ones that contain rehashed older songs and cover versions.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike the dominant creative force when it came to conceptual content? on: May 10, 2015, 11:37:18 AM
Sure Mike is a bragger - if I'd co-written 4 US #1s I'd be braggin too! Is he not allowed to take pride in what he has accomplished when giving interviews?

On this point, it is sort of amazing that someone who for more than fifty years has had the job of singing the words "Well I'm not bragging babe so don't put me down" night after night still hasn't picked up on the causal link between his bragging and other people putting him down.
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unusual words that made their way into BB lyrics... on: May 07, 2015, 09:34:01 AM
"pudgy" (find me another band, famous or otherwise, that has this in a lyric)

In total honesty, the word "pudgy" appears in the Frank Zappa song "The Illinois Enema Bandit", already mentioned twice in this thread.  Honestly, it's like some of you don't know it or something.

[paraphrased; too lazy to get the book and find the passage] "When I woke up this morning I went over to the piano and started writing a song. I don't know why, but it gave me a hard-on. I had to go into the bathroom and masturbate."

A-ha! Here it is, page 36:

"You know, I was at the piano this morning, kind of writing a song...I don't know why, but I got a hard-on. I had to go to the bathroom and masturbate."

Saturday, June 14, 1986

I wonder what song that was.

"Woody Wood-pecker Symphony".
