26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: May 24, 2017, 08:51:04 AM
Live In Hawaii:  August 1967 (Previously Unreleased)
(The Beach Boys recorded two complete concerts and rehearsals in Honolulu on August 25 and 26, 1967. Brian Wilson rejoined the group onstage for these shows; Bruce Johnston was not present. The following tracks derive from the original 1” 8-track master reels discovered in the Brother Records Archives.)
29. Heroes And Villains (Rehearsal) (4:45)

Hey, wait, hold on.  Forgive me if I've got confused, but could this be the version with the Mike monologue?

The version with the Mike monologue was recorded at Wally Heider's for the recreated "live" album, the rehearsal take is from the actual Hawaii rehearsal, and has been previously released (on the Concert/Live in London 2fer)

Thanks for this.  So, in conclusion, I was indeed confused.  Still, nice to get these things out in the open, eh?

I was reading some of the PS forum posts and a certain person there is claiming that a lot of negative opinions about Mike Love are based on incomplete information.

Surely Mr Love's autobiography could have been a great vehicle for conveying this missing information?  What a missed opportunity, if he failed to mention the specific facts that would inspire people to re-evaluate him!
29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love \ on: April 21, 2017, 02:20:46 PM
I'd like to know how a supposed Beatle fan  does NOT own anymore Wings albums than just "Band on The Run"...but knows "How She Boogaloed It"Huh

Hahahaha, right? and i know Noel by heart, that -really- took me by surprise, the only reason behind it is that Paul Weller must have mentioned to him

Another possibility is that he'd encountered one of those odd compilations that included it for some reason?  Like, er, Sunshine Dream (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_Dream) or something.  (Actually a really solid compilation, that, HSBI notwithstanding.)
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if Be With Me had been on Pet Sounds? on: April 15, 2017, 09:47:24 AM
Firstly, it never ceases to amaze me how good a song Be With Me is. I think it works on every level and is basically perfect - even with its vocal double tracking lyric glitch.

I never saw it as a "glitch" - I like to think it was intentional, like he couldn't decide between two words, so he sang both of them in that spot. Doesn't "Moonlight" from POB have a similar spot?

Interesting… Yeah, both songs have that "glitch", or "quirk"… I never thought that it could've been on purpose, but I suppose that's always possible. An interesting thought.

That effect - singing two different words simultaneously - if intentional - is a stroke of genius, or at least true inspiration. One of the many reasons I've always dug Dennis' stuff.

Maybe he'd been listening to "The Red Telephone" by Love?

Sensitive Music For Sensitive People should have a picture of Brian in a rocking chair on the front cover, and Brian in a wheelchair on the back.  (Subtitle: "The rock & roll album".)

And whether it's Carli Munoz on "Leaving This Town" on In Concert, Charles Lloyd stretching out on "All This Is That" in the late '70s or Blondie doing his intense open-ended noise assaults in 2016, I don't seem to ever object to the heavenly marriage of glorious Beach Boy music and ridiculous wig-out solos.
33  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: October 28, 2016, 03:51:37 PM
Can anyone remind me of the little song snippets they do for each member during the band intros?

Not comprehensively, but definitely "Smoke On The Water", "The James Bond Theme" and "Hey Bulldog" were in there.  And Nelson Bragg comes on to "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", complete with more cowbell.

How long have they been sticking a bit of "Rhapsody In Blue" at the end of "Fun Fun Fun"?  If they did that in the summer then I must have missed it.

Three brief notes after seeing my favourite songwriter in my favourite city:

1.  Thanks so much to acrossthesea for sorting me out for such a wonderful seat.  Really, really appreciated.

2.  Darian's back!

3.  Brian, before the title track of Pet Sounds: "When you hear these drums, you guys are gonna sh*t."

Forgive me if this has already been posted, I didn't see it anywhere.  A substantial piece regarding the current Pet Sounds tour in the Guardian, with snippets of new interviews (mostly Brian on muted form, sadly) and a nice extract from the autobiography:

37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love's Celebration... featuring Seasick Steve on: September 30, 2016, 08:07:24 AM
A little curio, this.  A biographer of the reasonably entertaining blues act, Seasick Steve, has uncovered his true history, which (needless to say) differs somewhat from the hobo existence which Steve has advertised.  Anyway, in a past life, as Steve Leach, it turns out that the Seasick one was once one of the vocalists for Celebration.  Fancy that!

38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Book Discussion Thread (and how it relates to the SS board) on: September 06, 2016, 10:58:16 AM
From the book:

Mike gets a phone call following the Tale-LaBianca murders.

Person on phone:" Prepare to die, pig."
Mike:" F--k you! Come down to Manhattan Beach, and we'll see who dies!"
No one came to visit, and he never called again.

That's telling 'em, Mike!

As stories go, beautifully unfalsifiable.  Has Mike ever mentioned this before?
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Book and the Smiley Smile Board...? on: August 30, 2016, 05:26:20 AM
Wait, if this means that Mike's book is going to have a multi-page digression about how discussing a topic is not the same as talking about it, then I think I'm out.

Mods, any chance of an official ruling with regard to posting quotes from this book?  (I'm talking about fair use of short passages in the context of commentary, rather than copy-and-pasting complete chapters or anything like that.)

I can't wait for the audiobook.  I predict that, as he reads this passage aloud, a few notes of barely-suppressed satisfaction, maybe even glee, will enter his voice.

Whoever thought of this is one sick puppy.

Puh-leeze somebody post about the first London concert or other reports about previous concerts!

This topic is supposed to be about the Love and Mercy Brian is presenting to us!

Don't worry guys, I'll take this.

Just back from the London Palladium.  Lots to enjoy.  "Add Some Music" was the first one that really hit me, but by no means the last.

Somehow one of my contact lenses contrived to fall out at the end of "Sloop John B", and I tried to put it back in but we were into "God Only Knows" and I found that there was some unhelpful water in my eye for some reason, so instead I just squinted at the stage, my one working eye marvelling at the miracle of Brian's one working ear.

Al and Blondie are phenomenal, and Matt J a remarkable addition.  I've seen Brian in better voice than tonight (C50 Wembley, to name but one) but please don't stick me in a box with the innuendo-spreaders for saying it, I still love the dude.  Nelson Bragg appears to have morphed gradually into Robyn Hitchcock, his shirt going some way towards sealing the deal.  I did miss Darian and that other keyboard guy but enough said.

Spotted in the audience: the actor Kevin Eldon.  I think the number of gigs that I've been to where I've seen members of the cast of This Morning With Richard Not Judy in the audience must now number in double figures.  This paragraph is unlikely to be of much assistance to American readers.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: May 16, 2016, 12:55:16 PM
I'm curious if Brian needs permission through BRI and/or Capitol to do a "Pet Sounds" tour? On the flipside, what would stop Mike & Bruce from billing their tour as Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary? I don't want to get into the appropriateness, but more the legality. Keep in mind I know nothing when it comes to "rights". Could there theoretically be dueling tours billed as "Pet Sounds" as long as Capitol signed off and appropriate fees paid?

I don't think any clearances are needed. I've seen club bands present a full album from artists and advertise it as such.

Certainly, Brian can perform the PS album in its entirety (or any other album). He can perform any song that has been published. His setlist is not bound by anything other than the song being published and standard royalties paid to all publishers.

Concerning advertising it as a "Pet Sounds" tour, I'm not sure any clearances would be needed. Capitol owns the original album, not BRI, so *if* permission were needed, it would more likely be from Capitol rather than BRI. And again, I think Paul McCartney could go out and do a "Paul McCartney Presents The MIU Album" tour and it would be fine. It's truly a descriptive tour title.

It would be fun to see Brian touring the 1985 album on that basis, as a test case.

A goat actually ate a radio?

Even decades later, Bruce Johnston never forgot the ill-tempered creatures. "The goats were horrible! They jump all over you and bite. One of them ate my radio. The zoo said we were torturing the animals, but they should have seen what we had to go through. We were doing all the suffering.

I for some reason find it hilarious that Bruce, whether he actually truly is or not, seems truly bitter about his experiences with some goats 50 years ago.

Truly Bruce Johnston is a man who has never known hardship.

47  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Ask the Moderators on: May 10, 2016, 03:00:16 PM
Seriously.  Imagine becoming a moderator here.  Imagine having a small army of back-seat moderators constantly badgering you to ban X, or reinstate Y, or step into a discussion, or close a thread, or move a thread from one forum to another, or to explain yourself, or do your job differently in any number of ways.  Imagine taking criticism for every act of moderation you make, because it's sure to have upset somebody.  Imagine being pulled to pieces for getting too involved, or for not getting involved enough.  Imagine your every action, either patiently explained in public or conducted discreetly in private, raked over for evidence of agendas, allegiances and biases.  Imagine board members trying to get you removed or replaced if they take against you for whatever reason.  Imagine the constant background hum of unanimous mithering that the board is spiralling into fatal decline and it's definitely your fault for not doing your job properly.

Imagine wanting to sign up for that job.  And then imagine still wanting to listen to the Beach Boys at the end of the day.

49  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: April 20, 2016, 02:09:01 PM
Quote
Just so I am straight on this; you are telling me that if AGD had zero or only one strike against him, then he would have received a finite ban, instead of a lifetime ban?

No, they both would've gotten lifetimes.

And it's hard for me *not* to take it personally; I feel like I'm being attacked, and that I could walk on water right this minute and still get crap. I'm this close to saying the hell with this board.
I will tell you why from my perspective. He is one of a handful of people here that when he posts, it has meaning to the thread. Usually, no horseshitting around. You can depend on getting a meaningful answer from him. There will be no one here on a regular basis to provide that function. That is a very big deal to me and should be a very big deal to the board. From all my years on the net, this is the only place that HAD a resident historian to draw from.

Man, I really don't get your angle here.  Say for instance that all of the revelations of this thread came out, but AGD was considered too great an asset to lose, and was allowed to stay.  Do you not see that he'd be damaged goods from hereon in?  How his version of history would be called into question?  How his "meaningful answers" and "no horseshitting around" might be somewhat undermined by the revelation that he's been spreading lies for, we're told, the better part of a decade?  Do you not see that every time that he might attempt to settle a dispute from now on by invoking some sort of confidential insider source, his credibility would be called into question?  (Hell, I think we should be going back to look at some of the older threads he's weighed into in that way, and checking that we got to the right conclusions.)

If you are bemoaning the loss of an important historian, then please realise that the actions under discussion are not the actions of a historian.  They are the actions of a liar...  or else, charitably, the acts of someone who isn't checking the information that he's receiving from third parties.  I leave it to you to decide whether AGD was the sort of person who checked facts or not.
