Went to the Chautauqua, NY show last night. Sold out show (the 10 of us had 2nd and 3rd row seats). I've seen the Beach Boys, Brian, Mike & Bruce, whatever, 35 times dating back to the early '70's and this was one of the best shows I've seen. They were on fire! Mike was spot on and having fun; Bruce had the lead on numerous songs and was in top form; Jeff, Scott, and Bryan ("Ike") were great; and John Cowsill was fantastic (including his show ending drum "solo"). The concert itself was an amazing 51 songs, lasting 2 hours, 55 minutes (with an intermission). It had to satisfy those who want the hits as well as those who like some "rarities" from a deep catalogue not often heard. The set list:
Surfin                                        Cailfornia Dreamin
Catch A Wave                             Sloop John B
It's OK                                       Wouldn't It Be Nice
Don't Back Down                         Then I Kissed Her
Little Honda                                California Girls
Do It Again                                 Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring (nailed it)
Goin To The Beach                       Warmth Of The Sun
Surfin Safari                                Disney Girls (Bruce sounded great)
Surfer Girl                                   All This Is That (a personal fav)
Wendy                                        All I Wanna Do (Mike sounded great)
Farmer's Daughter                       God Only Knows (Carl video)
You're So Good To Me                  Pisces Brothers
Good To My Baby                        Good Vibrations
Why Do Fools                              Do You Wanna Dance (nod to Dennis)
When I Grow Up                          All Summer Long
Darlin                                         Help Me Rhonda (we did our traditional strut)
Be True To Your School                Rock and Roll Music
Keep An Eye On Summer             Barbara Ann
Let Him Run Wild                         Surfin USA
Please Let Me Wonder                  Kokomo
Kiss Me Baby                               Fun, Fun, Fun (with Cowsill a "dumming maniac" at the end)
I Can Hear Music
Ballad Of Old Betsy
Getcha Back
Still Cruisin
Don't Worry Baby
Deuce Coupe
409
Shut Down
I Get Around
**Intermission**
Great show, great performances.......thanks to Mike, Bruce and the band for a fun night!

Just want to mention that Carl's works on the Beckley Lamm Wilson CD - especially I Wish for You and Like a Brother - are sometimes forgotten but so very good too and a recall what a great voice he was.

"Johnny Carson" on Sirius XM. Today is his birthday and Pat St. John (very big BB fan) played it on "60's on 6" (even though its from the 70's).

Regarding Carl, I went to see the Beach Boys as the New York State fair in Syracuse, NY on 8/21/97 (America opened the show). After a brief rain delay, the BB came on. IIRC Matt Jardine was also with them (and he sounded very good!). Carl looked a bit "bloated" from the chemo treatment I'd imagine and his beard gray-ish; but his voice was as strong and sweet as ever. Midway through, he sat on a stool for a bit. At one point during the show (encore?), the other guys (including Mike) did the bit where they knelt and bowed to Carl (in homage) while he played a guitar solo and he did the guitar line dance bit during Barbara Ann. From our seats, there didn't appear any issues between the band-mates.

As to the item about Al, I thought someplace on the board and in the books, it was said that Al had started to make plans and try to book some shows for a "symphonic" concert (not sure if only PS) without Mike et al. knowing and this, plus some other personality issues at this time, was the reason that Dave was to have replaced him. I'm just stating this from general memory and might stand to be corrected. Somewhat interesting in retrospect is that with the supposed Mike-Al tension at this time, Matt was touring.

Saw Matt perform with the group in Carl's last year and I agree that he was excellent. I remember thinking that hopefully he would become a fixture there.

Following up on the comments regarding the audiences at the various shows: when our group (usually 10 - 15 in number) attend their shows in our neck of the woods (Western New York to Toronto area), for us and our observation it has been that the M&B shows have been more of a "sing a long" while the attraction at the BW shows is more the artist. That holds true especially when BW has a "theme" show (ie. Pet Sounds; Smile; etc.) whereas at his "Greatest Hits" shows, it also tends to be a "sing a long" event.
Nothing wrong with either because the bottom line is we get to see the music performed!

Anybody see this somewhat recent picture of Phil Spector?

Holy moly....

I'd have to go with the Beatles next. Then really enjoy Three Dog Night; The Guess Who; America; The Turtles; The (Young) Rascals; The Who; The Moody Blues; Fleetwood Mac (and then just about most 60's groups).

Moon Dawg - We recently saw America play with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and they sounded very good. Should be an enjoyable concert - good harmonies throughout the day!

BTW, years ago we saw America and The Beach Boys at the NY State Fair just a few weeks before Carl passed away. His voice was still so wonderful. A bittersweet memory.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Warning: may change your view of Stamos ! on: July 22, 2014, 06:20:55 AM
Yes, thanks for posting.
I've also seen over the years Bruce assist up to the stage "challenged" individuals during the encore.

Also reminds me that back a few decades when recovering from an operation, I constantly had the Beach Boys on my cassette player in the hospital and which helped keep the spirits up (the doctors and nurses liked it as well!!).

A similarity that I find between the Beatles and the Beach Boys is the variety and diverseness of songs and music that both groups have in their respective catalogues. Styles, themes, arrangements, whatever.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's sick to death of hearing about the beatles....!? on: February 08, 2014, 11:32:13 AM
Not at all. I enjoy their music almost as much as the Beach Boys as well as the music from the "English Invasion" that followed their arrival to the U.S.

Sorry but a bit off topic - this reminded me that Alan Jardine was on Cousin Brucie's Sirius show last night (Sunday). I couldn't listen; did anyone catch it?

Not in the least and proud to be one!
Best US music group of all time and in the top tier worldwide.
And, to a good extent, they epitomize rock and roll - the great music (and on so many levels; moreso than many other groups); the drama; the personal misfortunes.
And, those who are not too acquainted with all their works and who have open minds and are willing to "be educated", often become fans or at least have a better appreciation of the group afterwards.

I am in total agreement with the comment by Mike's Beard! OSD's age and longevity as a fan should have nothing to do with it and that's said by a fan since the mid-60's. This board has been a nicer and better place since and with the information and discussion on various topics not getting derailed (as often) as a result.
Back to the point by the original poster; yes, this Board can be a wealth on information about the group, the individual members, the music, and all things related to the Beach Boys. And we are very lucky to have knowledgeable contributors (who actually participated, still participate, or are learned in all things BB) visit and participate from time to time. A special thanks to all of them!

If one can step back for a moment from being a BB fan and look at this subject, you'd come away saying something like that would make an interesting fictional plot line for some type of show - its got to be made up! Unfortunatly, the basic underlying facts are true (forget about trying to ascribe motives to individuals and all that stuff).

This would make a great fact pattern on a state bar exam!

Two observations to some of the recent posts:

1. The highlighted text in the paper's summary said BW was found not liable for "punitive" damages. That is not the same as direct damages so one cannot conclude that BW was found not liable.
2. "Facts are facts". That is entirely correct and magazine and paper articles, summaries etc. are not always entirely correct in their reporting. I don't think we have (may never have) all the facts (for this issue, the C50 issues, so many other controversies) so the ongoing arguments that go one about these are likely not correct - from either perspective.

Yes, PLMW was also played in Toronto on Saturday night. Sorry about the omission and thanks for the correction!
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: October 27, 2013, 08:34:08 AM
A group of us went to the Toronto show Saturday night. Nice venue (Sony Centre) which looked sold out (couldn't see the balcony). Crowd seemed about 50/50 split as to there for Brian or beck. Regardless, it was an entertaining show. From my recollection, set list and performances were identical to that posted for the Detroit show, except they did play CAW and no Pet Sounds (IIRC).
We've seen Brian every time he's up in the Buffalo - Toronto area and this was, by far, the most relaxed he's been (maybe because he's not the entire show with Al and David there and leads passed around so less pressure to perform?). He looked like he was enjoying himself during their set and more "animated" (ie. "into it"); made introductory comments (not just a few words) to more of the songs than usual; and, as some here have suggested his voice seems better than it has been in 10+years of touring again, perhaps because he is performing more. Al's voice is just so solid and david did a great job on Little Bird. Darian, Scott, Jeff all did great on their leads as well.
While I'm more a vocals and harmonies person than instrumentals/solos etc., Jeff Beck was outstanding and his guitar on Surf's Up almost sounded as it was singing (in addition to the guys doing the BVs).
One observation - IMO there was less  crowd energy - maybe due to the mixed crowd - than at a usual BB/BW/M&B concert which usually wind up with the up tempo crowd pleasers that has everyone singing and grooving to the music. That's not to take anything away from last night's show which we enjoyed very much.

Regarding the litigation, I have a question as to the chronology which might, in part, assist in understanding some items - and I ask this innocently without siding with either BB. Was Brian's action against Irving-Almo after his "treatment" by Landy was over? If Mike had sued, Brian would certainly have been deposed and be a witness and if the case was while Brian was "under the care" of Landy, that situation might have been used to discredit Brian had he testified in favor of Mike (didn't Brian testify somewhat in Mike's favor in their case?). Also, Mike likely had counsel review this whole issue at earlier points (that would be consistent with his oft-cited litigious nature) in which case one might surmise he was probably advised not to proceed at that time for whatever reasons.
It is difficult to speculate as to courses of litigation without knowing all the details, facts, strategies considered.

Taylor Mills made a guest appearance at Darien Lake (near Buffalo) in mid-2012 for the C50 Concert and sang the intro to Marcella.
A funny aside - in the comments introducing her, Brian said that she had just had a baby which, IIRC, was not the case.
Yes, she and her voice and a certain "something" to a song and a show.
