Dear Juice Brohnston,  in response to your post on Dec 29 asking me to "see if you can get Stephen to come on board" and that you "found his comments on "Man vs Clown" insightful" First off THANK YOU for wishing me a HAPPY NEW YEAR... and the same to you. I truly believe it will be a happy and prosperous year! I did talk to Stephen about your request to come on Smile... and his reply was... isn't this the guy with the planet of the apes head and the face of Mike Love and the mash-up of a fake name for Bruce Johnson.. who has posted numerous negative posts on this thread? To which I replied ... YES... that's the guy! I do not wish to alienate you... you did wish me a Happy New Year.. but I must say I almost had Stephen talked into cumming on Smile... except that He is a very private person... and does not wish to be taken advantage of by people who might take CHEAP SHOT'S  at him. I can assure you that Stephen does not have a mean spirited bone in his body... or he probably would have used the physical skills he possesses, from having earned a Football Scholarship to U.S.C., in 1965 to kick his brother , Mike Love's, ASS for having wrongfully fired him as the Beach Boy Manager for not sending me home, from the Austrailian tour, for punching out Carl because Carl gave, the ever broke, Dennis $100 bucks he bought Heroin with, even though he was supposed to be a devout hardliner AGAINST DRUGS!  All members of the Beach Boy Tour were ISSUED a personal MEMO from Stephen...STATING... that NO ONE was to give or loan money to Dennis while in this foreign Country... for fear that he would get arrested for procuring ILLEGAL DRUGS... and cause an International SCANDAL... forcing the entire TOUR to be CANCELLED. Such were the everpressing concerns and fears of Stephens when it came to booking any tour with Dennis!!! The REAL reason Mike turned on Stephen was because Stephen sent Mike a telegram at an ashram stating "Now is not the time to be STUPID" you need to get back here to rehearse with the group before we go out on tour! Mike's last report card at Dorsey High School was all D's and one F and one A in P.E. (Mike tried out for the Cross Country Team... but QUIT after TWO weeks) (he also watched the Varsity Football Team practice one day... and said THAT wasn't for him)
Rock,
No alienation on my part. Great dialogue here. I actually have always had a keen interest in Stephen's time with the band,  and although I don't know all the facts, I tend to lean towards the opinion that he probably was justified in the actions that he took, on the business/investment side of management.
Curious though in what he would construe as 'negative comments' by myself in this thread. I went back, and looked over the few comments I have posted here, and couldn't find a shred of negativity. Any thoughts?

I have just composed my letter and will be mailing it to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.  Fingers crossed!
Nice! So what image should adorn said stamp? Surfer Girl cover?

What a good idea!

Maybe we can start an online petition

Why hasn't the United States Postal Sevice issued a Beach Boys commemorative stamp? I get that for most of the bands history, the USPS guidelines meant living persons could not be honoured, but those rules changed some time ago. You would have thought 2012 would have been an excellent time for issue. What gives?

To Big Daddy, just getting back to some of the smile readers... THANK YOU for the welcoming!

Rock, see if you can get Stephen to come aboard. I found his comments on Man v Clown insightful.

Happy New Year.

Guys I just want to put something on the record.  I know for a fact the members of the touring band as recently as 2014 are paid at least 700.00 USD per show.  They are also given a daily 50 dollar cash stipend, the only time they are not given a cash stipend is the few times a year they stay at a casino that has a hotel where they can eat and charge it to the room.  Also the band requires 50,000.00 USD to come and do a show.  If you want to book the Endless summer band (the band minus BJ) that is 25,000.00, subsequently ESB the per show is half of a BB per show.
Good Intel. Now find out what Bruce makes and report back.

What would the perks be?

I'd kick in $25 to get a genuine sock in the jaw by the Rockster himself.

What a great photo op at the book signings. You know how like if you get a picture with a famous boxer Cheesy

Apparently Carl refused to perform his community service as an orderly at a Los Angeles veterans hospital, due to the lack of quality Cold Cuts in the cafeteria.

As noted, an unquestionably important part of music history.  But for me, it's the window into her personality that reveals possible issues. And I get this strictly from her Facebook posts. Everybody is against her; The Wrecking Crew, the Banks, Politicians, even her own Facebook friends.

Much Thanks for the Intel!
587  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Who Did Bruce Call? on: December 15, 2015, 04:26:21 PM
I assume it's been discussed but, I have never heard who it was that Bruce called when Mike asked him to find a replacement for Brian/Glen.

I never understood the full accreditation of 'stars' on this board. Brian gets 10*, Honoured Guests 6* Mods 5*. Should we upgrade Rocky to a 2* Azn

The actor who played Mike has apparently initiated a lawsuit, seeking co-nomination.
590  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rocky Pamplin book about The Beach Boys? on: December 10, 2015, 05:07:05 PM
So...what is the status of the book? Stephen was discussing it in some detail a while back. Btw Steve seems to have a good life in Hawaii.
591  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's band on: December 06, 2015, 11:36:08 AM
This is going around in circles. Neither party is coming out of this smelling like a well-adjusted rose and you're feeding the idiots who like to pint fingers and be contrary.  Either piss or get off the pot.

The ignore function addressed the concerns, it's available for installation. if people need an online app to ignore something, there it is. Problem solved. When all this gets into trying to destroy someone personally over this stuff and ruin names for whatever goals are in play here, it's another story.

Meanwhile you're going to go around in circles rubbing salt in what is effectively, your own wound. Okay, I feel sorry for you, but is it going to go away because you're doing this? Nope. Sort it out with the other mods and set out VERY CLEARLY a new set of rules to adhere to and make sure they're followed by one and all and stop these ludicrous threads that exist only to underline that Mike is a dick because you know how they always end up.

Smilin Ed, I'll ask you in all seriousness, and with an eye toward suggesting how to respond in the future. The terms people posting here found offensive were written by the author of that published article, it was part of his piece. When it became an issue, people's message headers began to change to take out what they found offensive - you don't need a moderator to do that.

So this article rubs people the wrong way, but what would a moderator do if the article is posted with a link for discussion here among fans, and that's exactly what the fans here were doing: Reading, discussing, and debating. The first post in the thread was a link to a published article, not a blog or a fan essay. The title of the thread was a phrase coined by the author of that article, and when it began to rub people the wrong way, it was changed to something acceptable.

Should the moderators lock or delete a thread any time a published article critical of a band member is posted to this board, if the results are as predictable as you're saying?

I'm asking in all seriousness.

There's debating and there's being a parasite. I think you're being a little disingenuous here, in that you know that the level of debate is often crude to put it mildly when it comes to anything Mike-related and now we have people going of on an opposite trajectory, bad mouthing Brian, partly, I suspect because said poster thinks he's a bit of a gadfly. And some of the worst offenders have already been gloating or otherwise on this thread. Surely some of that nonsense can be reined in by being stronger with the worst offenders - after you've rehashed and re-established the ground rules and let everyone know where they stand? There's so much to learn from the people who contribute to this board.

So should the article posted have been removed, or the thread deleted before it had a chance? Or what could the standard be to make that call moving forward? I'm just trying to get feedback and opinions on things like this.

To throw my 2 cents back in (I think I'm up to $3.50 right now), I think action should be taken once members start attacking each other. Posts should be removed, member warned, ect. Original thread stays up.

Members including moderators? Who warns the mod? another mod? police

Hmmm before I pick my date, let me consult the Badman book for absolute historical accuracy LOL

You stumble upon a sandbox time machne, inside which, drawing a date in the sand immediately transports you to wherever Brian Wilson is on said date. What date do you choose? Old Man
594  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if the band had their own Geffen/Azoff/Grant type Manager? on: November 18, 2015, 11:07:45 AM
I think about their beginning at Reprise. I mean, Sinatra started the label with a vision that artists would have complete creative control, and yet Sunflower went through several rejections until the final product. Ironically a great album critically, but less than stellar commercially, which is what I assume was the motive for Reprise management(commercial sales). Would a Geffen type representative have been tearing Mo Ostin a new one?

The flip side is that history shows that Steve Love's attempt to move the band into real estate investments in Hawaii and Texas would have, produced spectacular financial gains. Apparently there was a less than enthusiastic response to these deals by the group...resulting in a messy extraction of Love management. 3D
595  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / What if the band had their own Geffen/Azoff/Grant type Manager? on: November 16, 2015, 01:34:21 PM
Like or loathe the management styles of guys like Irv Azoff or Peter Grant, one thing can be said is that they were willing to go to battle for their clients 110%.

No secret that the Beach Boys management has historically been, well, a tad unstable. Would the band have had a more successful career with a 'pit bull' manager who had the bands best interests as a sole motivator?

Or is this a case of a group that would have found a way to drive away solid management.

Curious, Steve and Mike are estranged, I believe. But what about Steve and Stan? And Mike and Stan?
597  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rocky Pamplin book about The Beach Boys? on: November 11, 2015, 12:52:28 PM
Steve was talking about it quite a bit a few years back.

335Steve Love on July 14, 2014

Yes, Rocky did indeed knock Carl to the floor in Melbourne, Australia in March I978, my last tour with the band. Rocky has written a book titled WIPEOUT in which he devotes an entire chapter to what we participants in that meeting in Mike Love’s suite with David Frost and others refer to as “the heroin incident.” Carl was drunk and surly and made the mistake of saying “f*** you, Rocky” in front of a roomful of men. Rocky wasn’t going to take that and leapt to his feet, bounded across the room and socked Carl hard in the jaw. The back of Carl’s head banged against the wall and he fell to the floor. BTW, it was the most picture perfect haymaker I ever saw. It was a stroke of luck that Carl’s jaw was not broken. As for the other incident you refer to, I have no knowledge of what transpired there.

Not only was I NOT the guy who karate chopped Dennis in the throat in 1974 at the Red Onion restaurant in Redondo Beach, CA, I’m the guy who knocked out the bouncer who struck a barefoot Dennis who attempted to push past the doorman to get to the dance floor. This incident is recounted in detail in Rocky’s forthcoming book WIPEOUT in the chapter titled “A Broken Spirit.”

As for Rocky and Stan beating Dennis up on Super Bowl Sunday in January 1980, Dennis was endangering Brian and had to be stopped. Although they were no longer in his employ as bodyguard-handlers, they loved Brian and wanted to protect him from his reckless brother. I don’t think they regret their actions; in fact, I think they think it was a well-deserved intervention.

Rocky is seeking a literary agent to represent him. His intriguing book is complete, has 36 chapters and runs about 300 pages. WIPEOUT is a most entertaining rock-and-roll memoir. If any literary agent out there is interested, please get in touch with me and I’ll connect you with Rocky.

WIPEOUT is Rocky’s story, told in his own inimitable style. It is replete with rather racy recollections of movie and rock stars, rich people, and royalty. It is a story of deceit and betrayal, the excesses of ego, where greed and jealousy run riot and family members are fair game. Part memoir and part expose, this is a book for the ages. Aloha.

Steve
