I completely agree with the idea that as long as people pay to see Brian perform, then ultimately that is the marker.
I saw him in '99 and it was amazing, even though not perfect...just never thought I'd see him live Seen him maybe 4 or 5 times since. For me, in recent years, it just got uncomfortable watching him live so I don't go to see him anymore.
I always find the 'control' theories interesting. Since he is a grown ass man, even if he was being controlled, then that would kinda be his choice....
I must say though, it would have been interesting if there was one time in Brian's life when he was completely unattached. No Murry, no Marilyn, no Landy, no Melinda...just to see what choices he would have made, professionally and personally.

An added plus for me is that the movie kind of kickstarted me into poking around into all the crazy stuff happening at the time, especially in terms of Manson, and how immersed he was in the scene, which of course, really makes a lot of Bugliosi's tight little story farcical.
Read an interesting story about Mark Lindsay and Terry coming up with Good Thing, sitting on the couch in Cielo, under the beam where Sharon would be tied up. And Mark walking into the kitchen one time while Terry and Dennis were conferring with some 'Suits' and seeing Charlie sitting on the floor against the fridge.
It also has me really looking into Mama Cass connections. An aside, I read that she swapped her gold record of Monday, Monday with Bruce for his Good Vibrations award, anybody know if that's true?

IIRC, Al's new vocal for Isn't It Time (single version) was recorded in his hotel room in Norway, but I may be wrong.
As of now, might that be the last Beach Boys studio recording session for a new song? For it to be in Norway of all places, odd... And while this is sort of a different category, didn't Mike have someone do some post-2012 overdub for the otherwise vintage "Going To The Beach"'s "debut" on MIC? Yes, Scott Totten did a guitar overdub on "Goin' to the Beach", for what reason I can't fathom, as the backing track seemed complete enough. I think that took place post-C50, in 2013 probably? As for "Isn't It Time", it must have been a very late decision to do an alternate single version of the song, and they were already touring Europe by that time. I think they must have devised the new version/arrangement while on tour in the US, as I believe it was on some mid-US tour dates that they first started doing the alternate version? I'm trying to recall. It's also weird to think of the timeline of when Mike was already planning/booking M&B shows... was Al aware of the fact that C50 was dead tour walking and the reunion was basically doomed when he sang those lines in a Norwegian hotel room? It feels like a scene from an eventual scripted C50-themed movie. Also, I think Mary-Ann sent an email just after saying 'No MORE LINES FOR MR. JARDINE!!!'

Regardless of the amount of dialogue or limited screen time these characters have in the movie, they are integral to the idea of a shifting Hollywood, and the role that the main characters find themselves playing in changing times. Tate, and Bruce Lee especially are great characters to reflect the Hollywood structure - they are in the upswing of their careers, unlike Dalton and Booth, but like these guys, won't ultimately achieve their Hollywood dreams.
And the Manson tie in really does work, especially with the Ranch scene.

This has been an intriguing thread as I am a big fan of Melcher’s surf/hot rod work (as well as that with The Byrds) and I have to take umbrage with some peoples’ views that he had a mediocre voice. Just listen to stellar Rip Chords and Bruce & Terry tracks like Don’t Be Scared (RC), My Big Gun Board (RC), Hey Little Cobra (RC), Three Window Coupe (RC), Halfway (BT), Summer Means Fun (BT), Girl It’s Alright Now (BT), Custom Machine (BT – a rare track that eclipses a Beach Boys original) and Four Strong Winds (BT) and there’s proof that here is a lead vocalist who not only can hold a tune, but belt out some stunning songs.
He helped turn The Rip Chords from a mediocre doo-wop group into a pop-busting chart-making group, not only due to his production abilities and contacts in the business, but because of his prowess as a gutsy singer, who could belt out some classic tunes.
Obviously Bruce played a part as well, but as seems to be the case with him, he was relegated to a secondary role behind Terry himself and even behind the other Rip Chords, although his stunning falsetto was well used – just see how many lead vocals Bruce took during The Rip Chords and Bruce & Terry careers… just a handful. I always thought they should have been called Terry & Bruce, which would have been a fairer reflection on the that duo’s dynamics.
One final point, why did Bruce & Terry cover Here Comes Summer and sing it from a girl’s perspective (although I believe it was only a demo)? It’s a nice song, but sounds weird when Terry sings the lines “and then he’ll kiss me’, etc…
I think there were instances where Bruce was definitely schooling Terry in the studio

Reminded of this by the thread just started on Terry Melcher, but the film does spend a convincing amount of time focusing on The Byrds, specifically Mr Tambourine Man, as one of the hallmark recordings that changed the game, bringing poetry and the new folk-rock scene into the Top-10 singles charts and therefore the public consciousness. Yet unless I missed the references, they barely mention Terry Melcher's contributions as producer to those hallmark Byrds singles that became smash hits.
Just thinking out loud how it may have been a more accurate balance if they had leveled up McGuinn's credits with Melcher's and given Terry more screen mentions, since ultimately they both were responsible for bringing *that sound* to one of Dylan's folk songs in order to get it on the radio and in the charts. I'd wager if Terry were not producing those early Byrds hits, they would not have had the same impact. I doubt they would have done what they did with McGuinn's Rickenbacker sonically if they had an old-school staff producer on those sessions, for one example.
So if you take what you are saying here, and cross reference your earlier comments about Don't Worry Baby also adding to the propulsion of the Byrds sound, and of course, the relationship of Terry and Brian pre dating it all, does the Melcher influence loom even larger??

There is a lot to like on Terry's two solo albums IMO. Is it true he didn't like performing live? Always wanted to see a B&T set list from the shows in Hawaii with The Beach Boys And one other thing, I swear I once saw a Dean Torrence designed album cover for a Terry Melcher album titled 'Damn Everything But The Circus' -any Intel?

I was at the concert in Het Nieuwe Luxortheater in Rotterdam yesterday (July 3rd). A good and solid show. See setlist below. I thought both Mike and Bruce's voice held up quite well. And Brian Eichenbacher and Christian Love leads were good imo. The number of leadvocs by John and Scott seem to decrease... Nice to hear Mike speak fondly on his memories of their stay in The Netherlands while recording the Holland album. The Dec. 1970 night concert in Amsterdam (which was delayed almost 5 hours due to fog) was mentioned as well. They do remember those bits of history. The band (and families) are enjoying a free day today (very appropriate on July 4th). Tomorrow another show, near Rotterdam on the Tweede Maasvlakte. The exact location is unknown, but it's most probably on the beach. When travelling by car one apparently simply has to follow the signs when arriving in the area. From the parking lot busses will transport us to the venue. It's a concert with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. A relatively short set - 2 hours (starting at nine o'clock) including an intermission. Probably no rarities to be expected. But special nonetheless. This concert was organised by cruise company Spido to celebrate their 100th anniversary. https://www.spido.nl/en/tochten-cruises/consert-the-beach-boys-en-het-rotterdams-philharmonisch-orkest (no English page available with general info or for buying tickets) https://www.rotterdamsphilharmonisch.nl/en/agenda/176/The_Beach_Boys_en_het_Rotterdams_Philharmonisch_Orkest/100_jaar_Spido_The_Beach_Boys/Setlist Rotterdam, July 3rd 2019:First set: 1. Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Honkin' Down the Highway Single/LOVE YOU Marketing

Neil Young once said (in reference to his own output) that he thought some albums should be promoted, while others should simply be released.
Now, he also said that Geffen buried his 'Everybody's Rockin' album by giving it zero marketing support. But I can't see any amount of marketing making that a hit album. And I'm not comparing it to Love You by any stretch, but Love You was just never destined to have any commercial appeal. But what a great album. Hey didn't they say that The Velvet Underground with Nico only sold like 15,000 copies when it came out?
On the flip side, I remember reading somewhere (Mansion on The Hill book perhaps) where Springsteen's label absolutely committed to making Born in the USA the album that took Bruce from star to superstar. They promoted the crap out of that album. Now that is a very commercial album to start with, but they pushed and pushed. Makes you think.

Watched most of it and it wasn't anywhere near the train wreck I was expecting. Al's voice is a National treasure, and the band is really good.
Keep Brian in the mix and double his leads where possible. A lot of people think it's time for Brian to step away, but hey, it's show business-if people continue to pay to see him, and he wants to do it, keep going.

Feb 28 1964-The BBs played an afternoon show at Cupertino HS, Cupertino, CA without Brian. The big man joined them, however, for an evening show at Santa Clara Fairgrounds in San Jose, CA with the Rip Chords, the Dartells, The Surfaris, Bruce (Johnston) and Terry (Melcher), Chris Crosby, Ramona King and The Preps
Ever stumble across any set lists for Bruce and Terry shows? I know they did a couple of shows in Hawaii with The Beach Boys as well. I don't assume their touring history is overly large. I think I read some where that Terry wasn't particularly found of performing live.
