1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / what did Glen Campbell do on stage with the BB's? on: September 02, 2018, 02:00:13 AM
I've never seen any videos of Glen C. with the BB's, and I'm curious about what he did onstage. Obviously, he was technically replacing Brian, but...

1).  Was he playing bass?  I'm just wondering because he was normally a guitarist.  I suppose that they could have had Al play bass and Glen guitar. In one of the few pictures I've seen with them on stage, I can't see the instrument well, but from his fingers, it looks like he's playing a chord, which would suggest a guitar and not a bass.

2).  Did he sing Brian's leads?  After Bruce joined, they seemed to have Bruce sing Brian's falsetto backup vox, but Al or Carl handled his leads.  Does anybody know if they did the same with Glen?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Weird BB's dream on: January 23, 2017, 10:51:27 PM
So, I had this weird dream the other week involving the BB's...  it started as like the touring BB's were going to play Trump's inauguration, but Al stepped in and somehow got them to stop, due to some legal issue with BRI.

Of course in real life, that would have ended up in a huge, bitter battle, but as dreams are illogical, it instead wound up being a recording session reuniting the original members, in which I played some bass (also illogical--no-one would use my sloppy playing!).  We were recording a Brian Wilson song called 'I Will Die,' which was kind of a depression anthem.  Maybe a subliminal reaction to Trump.

Anyway, when I woke up, the song was still going in my head, so I hummed and sang it into my phone to preserve it for posterity.  I have a chorus with a U2-like bassline, a descending slide-guitar part, and a single melodic hook.  It's probably good enough to expand into a whole song, so there's that!

Hilariously, Mike not only has NOT mentioned this gig on his Facebook page, but today he posted a "Throwback Thursday" bit about the 1977 CBS Convention gig.

whoever's running Mike's fb page has also censored comments/visitor posts asking about the Texas inauguration ball & sharing the news link. Angry

eta: don't know if it's a facebook glitch (other pages seem ok) but I now seem to be blocked from liking or posting on his page.

Wow.  Sounds like they are just censoring anyone who posts anything inconvenient...
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Short New Interview w/ Mike on ABC News Website on: January 18, 2017, 10:07:23 PM
On one hand, I've long felt that Mike's role in the band has been denigrated by some.  Granted, it's not as important as Mike himself seems to claim, but it's still hard to imagine the BB's without him. I also think he's sometimes been unfairly blamed for certain things--the failure to complete Smile is probably a good example of that.

As such, I've long tried hard to find it in my heart to love Mike Love.

But man he makes it hard sometimes.  And now is one of those times.

I think in Trumps eyes, Paul McCartney ='Beatles', Don Henley ='Eagles'.

He's not going to get either of those guys; both are lefties.  And neither is in any need of money.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike is kind of playing the inauguration.... on: January 18, 2017, 09:44:39 PM
And see, by doing it like this, he's supporting Trump but less overtly. Clever.
I think they will actually play the main event too  Sad
Especially since the Bruce Springsteen cover band that was set to perform backed out.

So a Springsteen cover band backs out, and a Beach Boys cover band steps in.....

Post of the year LOL

LMFAO.

Beatles? Really? Is there a time machine involved? Perhaps a seance?

Ditto for The Eagles--they have been pretty clear that they are finished now that Frey is gone.

Sounds like a fantasy to me.  But who knows?

Nice to see the setlists back up to 38 songs...  maybe Brian is feeling better.

I find it a bit sad that they seem to have dropped 'One Kind of Love'--that was really great when they played it in Osaka.  Maybe they can bring back another NPP song, like 'Sail Away' though?
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike, Bruce, David, and b.v.s on TWGMTR on: August 10, 2016, 04:08:57 AM
Good thread!

As explained well by others above (especially Hey Jude), Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce and Jeff are audible on all songs, to varying degrees.  I've also heard the part about Dave being on the title track, and it does seem audible if you pay attention to it.

I wouldn't mind some of the Still Cruisin songs cracking the setlist at a Mike and Bruce show.

I think they did Still Cruisin at the RAH show at the end of C50.

They actually did 'Still Cruisin' a number of times (at least several times) in C50...  they introduced it for a while, and it was appearing on and off, then it disappeared, and it came back at the RAH show when they did everything!

I'm a huge Ramones fan, and I've always loved their version of 'Do You Wanna Dance,' which is definitely based on the BB's arrangement as mentioned above.  'Souped up' indeed!

To be honest, I LOVE 'Do You Wanna Dance,' and really enjoyed it in C50.

I notice that he hasn't played 'One Kind of Love' for a few shows...  hope he brings it back!

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you ever get sick of The Beach Boys? on: July 18, 2016, 10:31:36 PM
Weirdly enough, I'm going through a phase right now where I'm not listening to the BB's, after a phase of listening to them 24/7 in the months leading up to seeing Brian, Al and Blondie and for about a month thereafter.  But that doesn't mean I'm tired of TALKING about them.

Come to think of it though, I'm just going to take a walk, and I'm going to bring my headphones and listen to No Pier Pressure while I'm doing it...  Not the BB's, but not too far from them either.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you ever get sick of The Beach Boys? on: July 17, 2016, 08:56:44 PM
I'm obsessed with a lot of different bands, and I tend to go through stages.  I stop listening to the BB's for a while, and then I start again.  So I can't really say I get sick of them, but there are some periods of time when I listen to several of their albums in a day for weeks or months on end, and then sometimes I don't listen to them at all for months on end.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: July 14, 2016, 02:10:16 AM
I'm not sure if this is actually an unpopular opinion or not, but I think that Brian's lead vocal on Surf's Up kills Carl's lead vocal.

LOL!
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: July 05, 2016, 10:02:17 PM
I'm not a fan of the 'Summer in Paradise' album at all, but I actually really like the title track...  though I wish Mike wouldn't use his trick of re-using past BB's titles so much.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: July 02, 2016, 10:56:04 PM
Looks like 'California Saga: California' has been added to the last couple of shows. That's a great one...  I realize that the setlist for the Osaka show that I saw was better than most, but it still would have been awesome to hear Al sing that!
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: June 21, 2016, 09:43:27 PM
I'm still a bit confused; were the Boston Pops at the Tanglewood show? The setlist.fm entry says so, and the similar setlist suggests it. But the review above of the Tanglewood show doesn't mention the presence of an orchestra, which would be a pretty significant omission for a show review.

The Boston Pops was not at Tanglewood, just the two Symphony Hall shows Fri and Sat.

Hopefully once they get back on the road at the end of the month, the setlist will get back to around 40 songs or so. It's a bit of a bummer to see a non-orchestra, non-festival show with no opening act only go to 34 songs as apparently was the case at Tanglewood.

Yeah, what's up with that?

For whatever reason, Setlist FM does say that Tanglewood was an orchestra show, but many that was just a careless typo.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - The Man - The Mystery on: June 21, 2016, 09:41:00 PM
Another mystery : why did Carl step back from the leadership position post-Holland? It was 7 years before he recorded another self-penned song, and when he did begin to write again his songs and arrangements seemed to have lost their adventurous edge.

He also handed off the main production duties to Al, Bruce, and sundry others, even when Brian was not interested or capable. Did Carl, like Brian before him, just grow tired of being the main guy in the studio?

I could easily see Carl finding it difficult to emotionally deeply invest in being the band's producer after having the reins pulled out from under him post-Holland and given back to Brian (and I say that as a fan of 15BO and Love You). Carl and Jack were onto something really deep before the Brian is Back albums.

Even if Carl wasn't necessarily consciously resentful of losing his position as a primary producer of the band's studio recordings, it's probably a case of what Brian himself felt after SMiLE: It's mighty hard for an artist (especially a sensitive Wilson) to emotionally invest themselves at the top level of which they are capable of, if their work isn't going to be appreciated or gets rejected in some way, even if that rejection is just due to circumstance, and not due to people not liking their work.

That, and the fact that Carl had to juggle being the rational brother who felt responsibility to keep his other brothers from going over the edge, never more so than as the '70s dragged on post-Holland. I can't imagine how that gigantic distraction, coupled with his own personal and drug problems, wouldn't impact his songwriting/producing game.

Carl worked extremely hard to revive the BB's as a contemporary artistic entity, and then that was all derailed with Endless Summer, and then 15 Big Ones, which to me (and many others) represented a giant step back.  He made it clear in interviews that he wasn't happy with the direction that the band was going in.  He may have just lost motivation to write for a while as a result.

Anyone here go to last night's show? I'm curious if they've finally been able to get back to their standard-length setlist.

Yep! I was there and can report back when I get home. Yes, it was a full setlist (more than 40 songs I think). Show was good - Brian's voice wasn't as good as last time I saw them (2015) and he needed help walking (he complained that his back was in pain). Al has a cold and his voice was raspy, but they did do Help me, Rhonda. Other interesting choices: Funky Pretty, Do it Again.
I was really hoping for Funky Pretty at the Brooklyn show... not to be. Glad that you got it!

The setlist on Setlist FM says 40 songs...  fairly standard, but 'You're So Good To Me' made it for the first time in the tour (I think).  There was also both 'Wake The World' and 'Cottonfields,' indicating that Al must be feeling a bit better!

You are correct, I believe. "You're So Good To Me" was done sporadically in 2015, though not very often. They did it in San Francisco in September. That's one I actually wish they'd give to Al to sing; he sounded good singing that one with his "Family & Friends" band back in 1999/2000. I used to think it was probably outside his vocal range, but then all of a sudden in 2012 he started doing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" again and sounding shockingly good, so I think he could do it.

Also glad to see the setlist back to normal length, and that Al's stuff is being added back into the setlist.

I'm curious now if "Monster Mash" will survive through the entire tour!

I saw him sing WIBN twice in 2012, and yeah, he sounded awesome.  I think it's his song, and I'm still kinda surprised that they are having Matt do it.  Not that Matt isn't awesome, but Al really has the intonation down--he sounds more like the old Brian than anyone on that particular song.

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did Bruce and Jack disagree over? on: June 07, 2016, 10:23:34 PM
I think that Bruce seems a bit bi-polar...  and that's OK.  I have read some shocking stories about his interaction with fans, but also a lot of nice ones.  He's just kind of an unpredictable guy, and you have to ignore him when he's in a weird mood.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: June 07, 2016, 10:16:24 PM
I hope Brian plays a longer set when I see him on Sunday in Brooklyn.  Either way, I'm glad to hear the Pet Sounds album played live but I was looking forward to hearing some rarities too.

Based on the sets so far, for a full-length show, you can probably expect to get somewhere between 38 and 42 songs.  If 'Wake the World' 'Wild Honey' 'Funky Pretty' 'Our Prayer' and 'Add Some Music' qualify as rarities (to me they are at least deep cuts), then I think you can pretty much count on them being there.  I'm not a big fan of 'Monster Mash,' but if they play that, I think it definitely qualifies as a 'rarity'!
