Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Summer Fiction

I don't know if this group has ever been discussed here, but I thought I'd write about them because the Brian Wilson influence is super strong and I think people here would really enjoy it. I had the pleasure of seeing them open for Mark Mulcahy (of Miracle Legion and Adventures of Pete and Pete's Polaris) in Philadelphia last month. They posted to the shows event page a link to the song Lauren Lorraine ( https://vimeo.com/209003794) and I immediately could pick up a Beach Boys/Brian influence. I purchased their album, Himalaya, and the influence is all over the place. Give the track Himalaya a listen and the influence is very clear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6ThVlZ0ahg. It's a very Smile-like instrumental with some harmonic "oooh's" over it. The piano on the track at about 0:45 even sounds like a slowed down version of the Piano Demo H&V from Endless Harmony/Smile box set. Definitely one of the best openers I have seen at any show, and I highly recommend you all give them a listen. I really enjoy the album I purchased (Himalaya) and their self titled album is good as well. They're available on Google Play Music, Spotify, YouTube, etc.

Yeah, I know. I guess I was kinda thinking of something like the Smile Sessions. Despite being an unfinished album, nowhere on the cover does it mention anything about being The Smile Sessions, it's just SMiLE by The Beach Boys. It gives off the impression that it's an actual album as opposed to a compilation album or whatever. Hopefully I'm making sense here, because it definitely makes sense in my head!
I see what you mean. Probably a little easier with Smile because the cover was finished.

Yeah, looking at the new cover again, I can definitely see its merits. I'm just not a fan of the small "(The Caribou Sessions)" underneath the title, it makes the album feel more like a compilation than an actual "finished" album like I'd want it to be considered as. Nothing a little time in photoshop can't fix though!
But it's not a finished album. I think the subtitle is appropriate given the circumstances.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why All The Hate Concerning Album/Song Production?
|

This topic made me listen to some albums I've basically skimmed over since becoming more of a hardcore fan over a decade ago. Specifically, MIU, LA and Beach Boys 85. What I found is that I did enjoy several songs despite the production. I found several tracks on LA and 85 that were extremely good- Where I Belong specifically sounds very 80s to me, but man, it's a great song and performance by Carl. MIU on the other hands, I found I didn't like most of the songs.. because they're just bad songs. But Won'tcha Come Out Tonight still is able to break through just fine. Even She's Got Rhythm has enough to enjoy. So I am convinced now- if the song is a good song, for the most part, the production doesn't matter.

Did the theatrical release have "one kind of love" seemingly playing over the car radio while Brian and Melinda were heading to his childhood home at the end? It's present in the Blu Ray release and I definitely don't remember it in the early screener that I saw at the Atlanta Film Festival.
Yes, I saw it in the theater and One Kind of Love was playing. I recall reading that they did change that from earlier versions. Speculation was that it was done so the song was eligible to be nominated for an Oscar.

Someone posted a video recently (on here but I can't remember where) of Brian on some radio show. They start playing the studio version of Surfer Girl, Brian sings the opening few lines in perfect unison with his younger self and for those brief few seconds life was just fine. Beautiful stuff.
Somebody have that link?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson on 'Kokomo'

I'm amazed sometimes at how many might disagree about the film driving the song, maybe it's a bad memory thing or something because if you go back and look at every release of the song Kokomo from the time the movie was in the theaters, the sleeve or cover art has Tom Cruise as the bartender character from the film. And it's on Elektra, which the Beach Boys were not signed to but who released the soundtrack. Every release from the records to the tapes to the CD-singles to the official sheet music had Tom Cruise on the cover. I'm not claiming the movie had nothing to do with the success of the song (I was 4 when the movie came out and can't speak to it at all), but in 2015 I don't think many people even think about the film when they hear the song. They probably know it's the Beach Boys though. I think the song is probably more remembered than the movie. Contrast that with Power of Love from Back to the Future. When you hear that, most people immediately think of the film. They might know it's Huey Lewis. Anyway, at least Kokomo is better than Problem Child.
