Were The Beach Boys on crystal meth?

Add this song to the endless amount of songs that they somehow decided not to release.

It's mind-boggling, isn't it. What a fantastic song.

I'm not sure this MIC vocal isn't the same as the bootleg...it's so drastically slowed down from the booted version that maybe that's why BW's voice sounds so different?
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about Still A Mystery on: August 29, 2013, 02:11:38 PM
I don't think Jeff was involved with the Beach Boys in the mid-90s
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Question about Still A Mystery on: August 28, 2013, 07:10:04 AM
I've had the bootleg of this for years and always wondered this...

Who sings the high lead vocal on the chorus? The "It's happening again...." part.  It sounds like Bruce a little, Brian a little, or maybe Bruce and Brian together. I just can't tell. It's almost too smooth to be Brian which is why I think maybe Bruce.

Any ideas?

This pic may be my favorite post on this board, ever.

Guess you don't read the board very much, eh?  Roll Eyes

I read it everyday, actually. God forbid someone have different tastes in what humors them. Condescend much?

Good job following the rules of spoilers. Roll Eyes  Why don't you just post the setlist in the thread topic?

LOL...are you serious? Nobody posted spoilers at all. Oversensitive much?
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your Personal Beach Boys Story on: August 25, 2013, 07:29:40 PM
I haven't met any of the Beach Boys, but at the C50 show in Cincy last year Scott Bennett walked by where I was sitting on his way to the sound board (about 45 minutes before the show), and I stopped him, shook his hand, and chatted for about 15 seconds.

Kind of lame, but it was memorable for me. I think he was surprised I knew who he was.
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 25th Annivesary of Rock and Rolle HOF concert airing on Palladia on: August 25, 2013, 07:09:54 PM
Yeah, no Beach Boys live on that concert, but it is a stellar concert to watch/hear...some really great collaborations...Jackson Browne w/ CSN, U2 with Fergie and Jagger on "Gimme Shelter" is absolutely killer...Sting with Jeff Beck...good stuff.

They should've invited the boys to reform for this...Mike could've had another chance to insult and alienate the entire industry.
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Sunflower actually overrated? Defend the album. on: August 25, 2013, 07:04:33 PM
I find it a bit overrated as well. I actually like all three of the albums that followed it better, but I still like it quite a bit.

I have never understood the love for "All I Wanna Do." It's ok I guess, I just don't like the muddy production and Mike's vocal gets on my nerves. And there's some pretty worthless tunes on this record, which is what overrates it for me....

Stone Cold Classic:
This Whole World (probably my fave BB's song)

Great:
Forever
Slip On Through
Add Some Music
It's About Time
Cool, Cool Water

Ok/Good:
All I Wanna Do
Our Sweet Love (stellar CW vocal lifts this out of the next lowest category for me)

Take it or leave it:
Tears In The Morning
Deidre
Got To Know The Woman

Garbage:
At My Window (who's decision put this on the album? Blech)

This is probably my 6th-7th favorite album the band made.
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Any Idea What Keyboard Carl Is Playing Here? on: August 24, 2013, 06:26:57 PM
Whatever it is...it kills the song! I hate those cheesy 80's electric piano sounds...they resemble a piano about as much as Bruce Johnston resembles Oprah Winfrey.

Wonder how his bank account compares to Oprah's....probably closer than it should be
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would Surfs Up have been the Greatest? on: August 24, 2013, 12:46:35 PM
It's worth noting for clarity's sake that the correct title is "Sound of Free," and not "Sounds of Free."

Thanks. Sorry to be anal about one letter, but it actually makes a significant difference in the title to me.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: WIBNTLA Reviews on: August 23, 2013, 11:08:59 AM
I'm not sure when I'll be able to afford the box set, so I went ahead and listened to it.

Would've been great on Surf's Up LP. Not quite up to the hype, but still very, very good. It's truly amazing a song this good has been in the vaults for 40 years. Most bands would've made a career on a song like this, and for our boys, it's gone unheard for all this time. Crazy.

Relieved to finally hear it.
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys iPhone App on: August 21, 2013, 05:38:01 AM

How 'bout a Murry app that randomly spits out advice: "Be happy!" "Forget who you are!" Loosen up!"

How about "I'm a Genius too." Or maybe "Well since she put me down...Bo dee be do bop bop be do."

This is pretty cool overall...lead vocal is much better than Carl's on the album version (not hard...Carl's weakest vocal performance, imo).  It is rushed...it would have rocked harder if it was slowed down slightly. Also, Mike really, really sucks at playing the theramin. I mean, I know it's not an easy thing to play, but if it's going to be that out of tune, leave it out of the performance altogether.

I follow him on twitter, because I'm a little bit of a fan, but he comes across as a giant pretentious ass on there. Actually, he comes off that way NOT on twitter most of the time too.
95  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys Survivor #1: Surfin' Safari on: August 16, 2013, 03:55:41 PM
Moon Dawg

Bad choice, friend.  "Moon Dawg" is one of the few real surf songs on the album.

It was a toss up between "County Fair" and "Little Girl You're My Miss America", both of which feature rather insipid lead vocals, but I vote for "County Fair" as worst track.

Um, well, being a subjective thing and all... Roll Eyes

97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tongal Contests: California Feelin' & Goin' to the Beach on: July 31, 2013, 06:43:50 PM
I just listened to CF for the first time...gotta say, I'm not anywhere near as impressed with it as a lot of people. The harmonies are really nice and Bruce sounds good, but I really don't care for Brian on this, and honestly, Carl sounds terrible on this.

It is still better than the Classics version...I don't know that I rate it any higher than Al's Postcard version. Al's voice is really strong on that, the BGVs are solid and the gospel piano is rocking....

Just not overwhelmed with this version.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MiC up for order on Amazon, August release on: July 26, 2013, 06:11:37 PM
To be fair, that review could have been written by any fan before hearing the boxset!  LOL

Yes, it's pretty much a review of the press release and tracklisting.
You listen to a 7.5 hour box and have nothing new to say?
Nothing on the 65 unreleased tracks to comment on?
Thanks for publishing that, Examiner.

Examiner isn't exactly known for its useful, reliable reporting.

I am.

I didn't mean to offend what you did. I enjoyed reading your article.
I'm just saying that most of the articles on the website are very speculative and not entirely professional.

Yeah, why would anyone take offense at that?  Roll Eyes
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Captions anyone? on: July 26, 2013, 10:29:21 AM
Just for clarity, Stamos is playing congas, not bongos...the percussionist in me wants everyone to know the difference.

Oh, and that Jools Holland clip is FANTASTIC. That's one of the best non-Carl Wilson versions of that song I've ever heard. Brian's voice is so beautiful in that clip. Thanks for sharing.
