OP link is indeed a great performance of the song, nearly ruined by the horrible offkey singing of a woman either filming or nearby the filming. Really distracts from the beauty of the performance. If you suck at singing, don't sing along at concerts. In fact, even if you don't suck at singing, don't sing at concerts...people paid to hear professionals sing, not you.

I've often wondered the same thing. The whole thing is odd...Brian and Carl in the video for Summer of Love which neither sang on, and then neither is in the rest of the episode, then David is there, Bruce on bass, Al-Mike-Bruce writing SIP outside on a picnic table. Weirdness abounds.

I'm pretty that I read somewhere that he sings on the alternate, a Capella ending to GOK

I've seen many negative Beach Boys reviews, but this tops them all.
Just my opinion, feel free to disagree.
In terms of the MIC review, my biggest complaint is his opinion that almost all their post-"Heroes and Villains" work is inessential and inconsequential. Their best era was from 1966 to 1973!!!
As for their commetcial downfall, not only was that only in America, but it was not because of their high-quality of their songs and albums, but it's because of their long-suffering image problem. Other than Mike Love, it's not their fault.

Wow. Scathing.  I wonder if Dave Marsh ever changed his opinion of the overratedness of the Beach Boys after 1979. Anyone know?

I understand how you feel, but I still say it's not objective...I can just as easily say that Lahaina Aloha (which I like, btw) is far more derivative than Soul Searchin. I find the late 80s/early 90s drums, driving guitar/bass and production to be incredibly derivative myself. Carl's vocal saves it from mediocrity, in my opinion, and lifts it to "pretty good" status.

I just fell in love with this song, it's so classy, not crassy, not 90s, Pet Sound-y, kinda fantastic all around.

Soooooo... is it ok to say that THIS IS THE BEST BEACH BOYS SONG OF THE 90s?!?!?!  I know it's not ALL 90s but pretty much?

#2 - Lahaina Aloha

No joke. Sorry folks. Of course what else is there? The rest of SIP, Problem Child, Crocodile Rock (other than S&S/Fun Fun Fun). THAT'S IT. So not much competition is my point.

Regardless of there not being much competition, "Mystery" and "Soul Searchin'" are just fuckin' miles upon miles ahead of the other stuff you named, Sweet Insanity, etc.

Look, I'm sorry, but Soul Searchin' is extremely derivative and unoriginal. There is nothing at all special about the song itself. I only appreciate it because it's an extremely rare specimen of mid-90s Beach Boys vocals. And I feel very comfortable saying that now that we know that it's an Andy Paley song. Lahaina Aloha is hands down a better song and a more enjoyable track (the second half of that sentence is IMO of course).

Actually, both halves of that last sentence are your opinion. They're both completely subjective statements. "Soul Searching" is a better song than "Lahaina Aloha" and it's more enjoyable. See?

Keyboards? There's a piano and organ on that song. Which did he play, or both?  Just curious.

99% sure it is a cover of the Carl & The Passions song.

Man, I hope this album doesn't suck get ruined by too many hands in the pot and possible covers/outside participation.

I know. I was under the impression BW had lots of new, original tunes to work on. Oh well. I do like that song if that's what it is.

I'll miss Brian's growl on "DAMN the thunder..."  but it's very cool that BC will be guesting on these dates. Hope someone records the shows with Blondie....those shows will have twice the number of Beach Boys on stage than an actual show by the Beach Boys. Life is odd.

for me it's "Summer of Love" and nothing else could even come remotely close to the awfulness of those lyrics. Not only worst lyrics, but worst song...not worst song of the Beach Boys, but just worst song. Ever.

This song, and a good recording of it, may be the absolute highlight of MIC. This song is as good as anything Brian and the boys created since SMiLE or at least 'Til I Die.

Alan Boyd, thanks for answering my original question in this thread. I am pleasantly surprised to hear that one of those voices is Carl. I really, really thought it sounded like Bruce. I didn't think Carl would be doing much falsetto singing by the mid-90s but it's really cool to hear that he did.
