Ok. Bought the CD today (after looking at wal-mart, target and two best buys..bought the only copy at the second best buy. WTF?)....
Blasted this sucker on my car stereo and gotta say, the negative over-reactions to this album here are nothing short of ludicrous.
Yes, I agree they sound robotic at times and it's a little too sterile...and, I agree that there's more life and soul in the Chiba and Mermaid recordings, but...to say things like this album will be a PR disaster for Capital Records or that it's the low point in the Beach Boys Career, or that you're boycotting the album....all those things are ridiculous, bordering on asinine.
Is it disappointing they didn't give us a full show DVD or a CD mixed and produced more naturally? Is it still an enjoyable listen and a decent memento from a great time in Beach Boys' history? I say yes to both.
Highlights for me...Probably the best Disney Girls I've heard. In fact, it will likely be the only version I listen to (studio version is boring as hell anyway). David Marks is phenomenal on this album. I dare say this live recording is the highlight of his career as a Beach Boy. California Saga sounds wonderful.

People who can tolerate the sound of this album, particularly the vocal sounds, may like or at least be able to tolerate music that features autotuning used in a very gimmicky, obvious way. I personally hate, hate, hate it. It's one of the worst things about music for the past several years, that so many hit records feature it. It's in every example on this record, even the backing vocals. Robo-Bruce on California Girls. I'm glad someone likes it and someone may buy it, but it won't be me. The Beach Boys are not Katy Perry or Ke$ha and the way autotune is used doesn't suit them.
I agree that The Beach Boys should be above the gimmicks of modern pop music and it's not a great sounding album...I just know and despise the amount of condescension from the big-time posters on this board that is coming the way of those who might enjoy this album anyway. Like I can't possibly know anything about music (not even close to true) and also enjoy this album (true).

And so begins the condescending "If you like it, you're wrong/an idiot/on drugs/
That's an insult to people on drugs. In seriosuness, I agree with you. If you like it, you like it. It's usually those of us who work in music/ recording that find it intolerable. I'm envious of those with innocent ears. I'm actually a semi-professional musician with a great ear...I clearly hear the problem and yes it does bother me...I'm just saying it's not as bad as the overreaction on this board made it out to be. It's not unlistenable. They could do much better and much worse.

I agree with Waspinators...It's not THAT bad. It's bad, yes, and I definitely would have preferred a more natural recording, but it's still not as bad as some of you are making it out to be.
I'll buy it, listen to it and leave it in my car for an occasional listen after that. Being angry about it and comparing Joe Thomas to a pedophile really doesn't do anything except make people here look ridiculous.
When I want a better sounding show from this your, I'll just listen to the BBC Mermaid Theater show or the Japan show. Not that big a deal.

I guess I just don't take the whole fans of Brian vs. fans of Mike thing serious. it's very lame and bitchy to me. Many of the fans here probably argue more than The Beach Boys do. This whole justification of childish posts because "a fan of brianista said this" or "a mike lover said that" is worn out and old. I like and dislike things about all of The Beach Boys as I'm sure everyone does. Is there nothing more interesting to talk about?
I think it's a trickle down effect. I'll bet a band who all get on well and don't have huge rows, have a fanbase that behaves similarly. The Beach Boys have the fans they deserve. That sums up the Beach Boys, their fans and this board pretty much more perfectly than I've ever seen.

Consummate frontman? WTF? He's a dirty old (rich) man! Beach Boys never needed a "front man". Just get out there and play the crap outta the songs and skip all the corn fed banter. I'm not a big Mike Love defender, but I think you're wrong there...Mike Love is a great frontman. Cheesy? Corny? Hell yes...but that's been part of The Beach Boys from Day Freaking One....Mike Love and his slightly cornball personality has always been part of the band. You can't have it both ways: It's either The Beach Boys with Mike Love and all that comes with it, or no Beach Boys. Brian IS the Beach Boys. Yeah, I've heard that quote and agree with it to an extent, but Terry Melcher was right in Endless Harmony when he said "There's a definite Mike Love element to the Beach Boys."

I think an album made with 3 original Beach Boys (BW, AJ, DM) would be just a legitimate as a tour with only one original Beach Boy (ML)...why can't Brian, Al and Dave make a Beach Boys album? I'd miss Mike's part of the vocal blend (Bruce I don't care about so much), but it's not like Brian, Al and Dave aren't capable of carrying a band in the studio as much as Mike is on stage.

Very cool that they decided to not just make "greatest hits live." I'm very happy with Heroes, Sailor, Add Some Music, Pet Sounds, LGIOK, Marcella and others...also cool to have a few they didn't play when I saw them in Cincinnati like Getcha Back and LGIOK.
I also think there should be more Jardine represented, but I thought that about the whole tour in general. No CottonFields is very surprising to me, as it was a highlight at the concert I saw.

Definitely agree that Al's voice is by far the best of the surviving boys. I'd actually put it at second best overall in the history of the band for my tastes (2nd to Carl). He seems friendly and likeable, and his complete and utter misremembering and mangling of historical facts comes off as kind of quirky and almost charming at times. I also agree that Postcard is better than most people give it credit for. The version of California Feeling on there is a prime example of his strong vocals holding up...it's one of my favorite Al vocals in fact.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The last GREAT Beach Boys song in your opinion

Well, before TWGMTR came out, I'd say "Still A Mystery," which is one of the top-15 songs they ever recorded, imo. If that doesn't count since it was never officially released, I'll go with "The Night Was So Young."
Since TWGMTR, my official answer is that "From There To Back Again," "Pacific Coast Highway," and "Summer's Gone" are the last GREAT Beach Boy songs.
