OK, I'll bite.
Friends, 20/20  = 60s.
Sunflower = 70s.

Even though a good part of Sunflower was recorded in 69.

Your move.

Sunflower has a 60s vibe to it, even though it was released in 1970. Just going by the overall vibe of each record, I would say
Sunflower=60s and Surf's Up=70s.
2953  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Radiohead - In Rainbows. How Much Did You Pay? on: October 19, 2007, 10:59:53 PM
Radiohead is a pretty good group, but not as great as hype would have one believe, IMHO. Maybe its just me, but I find a lot of their stuff to be really cold, distant, and robotic. Though I do listen to Radiohead quite regularly, I prefer The Flaming Lips or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco to Radiohead.

I guess what I really have to say here is that Thom Yorke's music pales in comparison to Brian Wilson's (but is still a million times better than Mike Love's).
I like SMiLE and Pet Sounds, and hell, even Summer Days a hundred times better than Ok Computer, but I would take a Radiohead album over Kokomo, Summer In Paradise, or Looking Back With Love any day of the week.
2954  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Band loses another band member. on: October 19, 2007, 09:29:54 PM
Per my handy AGD reference books, David Marks left the BBs August 1963.  Al played on the new songs that were on the fourth album, which was released October 2003.   Does that mean Al was part of the crucial year 1963?
2003? Don't you mean 1963?

The "4th album" refers to Little Deuce Coupe, right?
2955  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB relationship with Van Dyke Parks on: October 19, 2007, 08:06:18 PM
I know he's said he doesn't like Mike Love. The ironic thing is that he played accordion on "Kokomo".
2956  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Band loses another band member. on: October 19, 2007, 08:00:39 PM
Ricky said, when asked what it was like being a Beach Boy, 'That's ridiculous, i'm not a Beach Boy, you know'. He then subsequently argued how, as it was such a close-knit band, no one from outside could ever really penetrate it - which is probably why both he and Blondie both eventually ended up quitting, as did Bruce before them. Now if Ricky, who wrote, sang and played on two albums, isn't a Beach Boy, then these gurning blokes currently playing alongside Mike sure as hell aren't...!
One final point: If Mike were sick one night next week and couldn't play but the band went on without him anyway, would THAT still be the Beach Boys? If so, that's ridiculous! If not, end of argument.

Blondie and Ricky will always be in "my" Beach Boys, even if they don't consider themselves BBs.
2957  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: British Beach Boys-like band you should hear!! on: October 19, 2007, 07:55:29 PM

And if anyone else can suggest a similar modern-day group worth seeking out if you're a BB fan than please do...

The Flaming Lips-check out The Soft Bulletin

The Apples In Stereo

Barenaked Ladies (they even have a song called "Brian Wilson"-BW covered it for Live At The Roxy)

Wilco (they do a folky sounding cover of BW's "Love and Mercy")

And though I absolutely despise the All-American Rejects (formulaic top 40 emo-pop), I read an interview in Rolling Stone with their frontman, and he said he loves Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations".
2958  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Great song - coulda been better! on: October 19, 2007, 07:44:42 PM
About half of the Beach Boys '85 album would've sounded great with the BB's classic 60s sound instead of Steve Levine's dreadful production, with more creative input from Brian (unfortunately he was "Landy-fied" at the time), and with Mike Love sounding less nasal.
2959  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Band loses another band member. on: October 19, 2007, 07:32:57 PM

group hug For me the only members that matter are Mike, Bruce, Carl, Denny, Brian, and Al.  Bow Anyone else is just "filler".

What about Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar?
2960  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite obscure vocal part? on: October 16, 2007, 08:23:44 AM
Carl singing "and that makes all the difference to me" in All This Is That

Blondie Chaplin's background parts in "He Come Down"-I'm not a religious person, but I love the singing on that song, and Blondie's voice sort of gives it some authenticity

Brian's falsetto "oh oh oh" in the instrumental break on "Forever"

Though its not that obscure, Brian singing the bridge on the vocal-only version of "Wouldn't It Be Nice"

Brian singing Frankie Valli's "oooh oooh oooh" falsetto line from "Walk Like A Man" at the end of "Surfer's Rule" after the boys sing "4 Seasons you better believe it, surfer's rule"-to me it seems like the BB's are calling the 4 Seasons out for a fight

Dennis' vocal at the beginning of "Thoughts of You"

I also like Dennis' vocal on "Its Trying To Say"-I think its a horrible song, but some reason that I can't really explain, I really dig Dennis' singing
2961  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: BB photo collage on: October 14, 2007, 11:03:47 AM
I converted it from a tiff to a jpeg so I could upload it to photobucket and it got scaled down in the process. The original copy on my computer is about twice as big as this. I'm currently using it as my desktop background.
2962  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / BB photo collage on: October 13, 2007, 06:12:39 PM
Last night when I was bored I made a BB photo collage. I might use it for a mix CD cover in the future. Thanks to warnakeysbeachboysblog.blogspot.com for putting up a huge collection of BB photos for download. I used a program called the GIMP to make the collage.

2963  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson solo recordings on: October 10, 2007, 09:58:01 PM
You say you're not out to criticize Brian Wilson, but you do so anyway. You can't come up with a suitable arguable in favor for Mike so what do you do? Jab at the other BB's faults whether they exist or not.

In Brian's case, what Ed *is* legitimate.  What's Mike's excuse?
He's an ornery old fart who's always been jealous of the Wilson bros' talents, that's his excuse.
...well, not really. He just has a nasal singing voice that's gotten really unbearable since the second half of the 70s.
2964  Smiley Smile Stuff / Album, Book and Video Reviews And Discussions / Re: Pick the 10 essential Beach Boy and BB solo albums on: October 02, 2007, 10:44:25 PM
I can't believe Summer in Paradise got more votes than Rarities and BB85.
2965  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Purchased my first Beach Boys album in 2006... and I am 48! on: September 30, 2007, 02:57:14 PM
I'm way too young to have been around during the BB's "heyday" (I'm only 22), but I've just recently also become a die-hard fan.
When I was kid my mom had a copy of Endless Summer on vinyl, probably something she got back in the 70s. When I was around 6/7 years old (1992-ish) my mom would always be putting on Endless Summer, always starting with side 4 (one record had sides 1 and 4, the other had 2 and 3), therefore making California Girls the first BB song I ever heard. It was some of the first "adult" music that I paid attention to. After a while, my mom gets over her Beach Boys kick, her LP sits around collecting dust. Around age 10 my parents split up, mom moves out but leaves behind her record collection. My dad was never a BB fan, so I was hearing a lot Queen, Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Supertramp whenever he played any music. I was also starting to develop my own musical tastes around this time.  I was always aware of the BB's, but never really paid much attention to them. In 1998 I saw a concert/doc on PBS where Brian was performing songs with a bunch of musicians (there was a guy from the Eagles, Glenn Frey?Huh, and either Al or Bruce from the BB's), and if I remember right, did some sort of tribute to Carl, who had recently passed. This was probably around the time Imagination came out. There was another time I saw an E True Hollywood story about the beach boys, where I first heard about the whole Dennis-Charlie Manson thing. But I thought they were still just an oldies group. When I was 17, I pulled out my mom's old copy of Endless Summer and realized how great the BB's really were. My first year of college (2003) I bought Sounds of Summer on an impulse. Before this I only knew the songs from Endless Summer, I knew Kokomo because of a cover by Kermit the Frog that was played on kids TV all the time in the 90s, and had heard WIBN on the occasional movie soundtrack.. I heard God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, Sloop John B, Wouldn't It Be Nice (in its entirety), and Heroes and Villains for the first time. I had also heard about SMiLE for the first time ever when BWPS came out, I so badly wanted to hear the original recordings. By the end of 2005, I had bought Pet Sounds, fallen in love with it, and downloaded my first SMiLE boot (Ryan Guidry's). Next came some 2fers, SS/WH, Sunflower/SU, and on and on. I've since read Chuck Granata, Dom Priore, and Peter Carlin. Would love to read David Leaf's book, too bad its out of print. Still haven't read Look Listen Vibate Smile, or Steven Gaines, or Timothy White-though I plan on it. I've downloaded quite a few bootlegs, made my own SMiLE mixes/comps. The most important thing I've learned from all of this, though, is that Mike Love is a douche bag, but I'll rant about that in a different thread.
2966  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ringor Starr or Charlie Watts on: September 23, 2007, 12:30:05 PM
He's a talented songwriter and a great singer. But as a drummer he is really terrible. He had charisma on the stage and energy and all of that, but that doesn't make up for bad drumming. I'm not a girl. I don't care if he's cute. Being cute doens't make up for merdaty drumming.
I'm not a girl "who think Dennis is cute". I never said I thought he was cute. I'm more like a guy who wished he could be Dennis. Now he may not have been a "great musician", but he did pretty good for someone who was put on the drums because it was the only spot left in the group. Maybe he wasn't as "proficient" as Starr or Watts, but he was definitely a lot more entertaining. I think we could all agree he had a better singing voice than Ringo.
2967  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Ringor Starr or Charlie Watts on: September 21, 2007, 07:47:12 AM
He sucks.
He more than made up for lack of technique with energy and intensity. He certainly bashed the hell out of the drums. Keith Moon certainly took some cues from Denny.

Plus, he wrote "Forever", "Little Bird", "Cuddle Up", "Only With You", "Fallin' In Love", "A Time To Live In Dreams", POB, etc. etc.

Hey, aren't we forgetting our very own Dennis Wilson?

Where in upstate NY?  I grew up in Binghamton.

The band is planning to tour again in '08...I have a compilation album coming out in February.  We should make it back east then.

By the bye, we'll also be doing a couple of other Beach Boys songs in the set besides the C & D stuff.

Plattsburgh-      way wayyyy upstate-wish there were more BB fans up this way

As long as Mike Love is vilified then I'll be happy.

I would love to come but I'm in Upstate New York. Good luck with the show, though.

Wow, I didn't know Brian played SPAC. I live only about 1 1/2 hours north of there. If he had come up a little farther north, maybe Burlington, VT, Plattsburgh, NY, or Montreal, it'd be super easy for me to get to one of his shows.

2974  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Imagination on: April 24, 2007, 11:22:02 PM

Our consensus is that it is the worst BB solo album. Period.

You've not heard GIOMH yet, then ? Prepare to revise your judgement.  Cool
I thought "Looking Back With Love" was supposed to be the worst BB solo album.
2975  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE on: April 24, 2007, 11:16:01 PM
I'm more interested in Ray Davies - Other People's Lives, Bob Dylan - Modern Times, and Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways.
Ahh, rootsy and gritty-type stuff.
