According to Elliott in DAG #3, the band's attendance at the Friends sessions was as follows (home studio unless otherwise noted):
I really hope a lot of this stuff (especially the early alternate versions) shows up on the 2018 copyright extension release...since we'll likely never get a box set. Session audio of Murry in the studio singing would be a trip as well.

Hated Transcendental Meditation passionately until the instrumental on MiC. I think it works way better without the dissonant vocals and TM lyrics. It reminds me of the Doc Severinsen era Tonight Show band or something. Still don't think it really belongs as an album closer though. Aside from that Friends is one of their most solid albums.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love & Mercy soundtrack discussion and a certain multi-track surprise

Going back to all of the discussions in the past concerning the lost GV vocal multi-tracks, was it ever indicated that different partial segments might exist on separate tapes, thus allowing for the possibility that some but not all might be discovered?
That's a possibility but I don't think it's how Brian operated in '66 when he was recording modularly (Pre-Smile). He recorded a backing track in sections, edited those sections together for a final mono master and then recorded all vocals over that. The "hum de dum" section of GV appears to be an exception to that, but it was also scrapped for the final track. Here's a mix of GV floating around that is essentially a work in progress of the vocals, still missing many overdubs. I hope this is OK to post for educational purposes. https://soundcloud.com/smileyhoneyfriends-1/gv-altI have yet to see the film, but how clean do the vocals sound? They could very well be extractions, but they also keep finding missing tapes all the time.

The blu ray had better be JAM packed with extras. Making of the soundtrack, making of the sets, costume design, filming. I know a few posters here got their panties in a twist over that trivial Surfin Safari truck - perhaps a 'Making Of' feature could shed some light on why a more vintage truck wasn't used.
I think you're the one with the twisted panties. I merely pointed out a glaring error in the production design. I still think that if they couldn't bother to do it right to match the album cover they probably shouldn't have done the scene. I'm still looking forward to the movie, as it seems like everything that actually matters was done right.

While many of the tracks on The Big Beat are demo recordings sourced from acetates or other sources, not everything contained in it is of that quality. "The Big Beat", "Mother May I", "Bobby Left Me", "Side Two", and "Ballad Of Old Betsy (Demo)" all sound like they're new mixes from the original tapes. If these tracks failed Lossless Audio Checker than I'd say it's almost 100% certain that the tracks offered from Qobuz aren't genuine lossless files.

They found the session reel for "The Warmth of the Sun" and "Fun, Fun, Fun" (recorded at the same New Years Day, 1964 session) sometime before the Made In California box set was released last year. Boyd and Linnet have said nothing specifically about finding this tape, but they have indicated that more tapes have turned up in recent years.
The rest of the songs from SDVII are presumably still missing.

I love all of the session highlights and New Backing Track Mixes. I still wonder though, where are the tracking sessions for Wendy and Little Honda? I mean, I love how they are presented on the set but, I would love to hear highlights from these sessions some day! Are they missing from the vault, I would love to hear them!
My guess is that the tracking sessions for Wendy and Little Honda aren't in the vault and they only have the tapes with the vocal overdubs.

My copies of Friends and Love You came in the mail yesterday, and I'm not much of an audiophile but they both sound a whole lot better than my old CD/mp3 copies. Friends in particular is a revelation, the difference in sound quality is huge. It may take some getting used to, since the lo-fi audio is part of the album's charm for me, but I love it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I'm curious if Love You has the same sort of rough cardboard texture to the jacket as the original release.

Seriously, are we now using the Summer Dreams TV movie of the week (based on Brian's "autobiography") as some sort of example now? Gimme a break.
[koff] Summer Dreams was based on the Gaines book. Being released in 1990 kinda mitigates against it being based on something published in 1991. Yeah, I remembered that like 5 minutes after I posted that.

No he wasn't. Whether it's no longer the case or not, he was at one point. Was he really? I'm really not sure - could you point to a source on that? I've read at least one interview with Dano where he discussed speaking with Brian personally before acting, receiving his blessing not to mention Brian and his band being involved in the wrap party for the film, presumably while still a producer. Yes, they are different movies. No one is arguing against that. However, you are shifting the goal posts. Your original point was that a Beatles biopic would not contain an error. What I meant was a high caliber Beatles biopic with the Beatles having some tacit involvement, which has obviously yet to be made (despite your insistence that "Backbeat" is such a film). Which is what Love and Mercy is to an extent with Brian Wilson/the Beach Boys. It's a high profile, decent budgetish movie and comes with a lot more expectations. The fact is that you can't name a biopic on anyone, blessing or not, that doesn't have some kind of error in it.
Again, re-read my posts. I'm not against any sort of revisionism. I realize films often have to dramatize aspects of real life. I enjoy the Buddy Holly story even though much is changed or left out. I'm actually looking forward to how Smile is depicted in this, even though I know the real story is more complicated. However I do think changing the iconography of something like an album cover IS slightly egregious and is usually NOT something these sorts of movies deviate from. We're talking about changing the visual identity of something because of budgetary concerns or whatever excuse there was. Are the errors in the Summer Dream movie some how more acceptable or understandable to you because the movie didn't have anyone's blessing?

I'm really not sure what your point is, then. I thought you were suggesting that a Beatles biopic wouldn't contain errors but now you're suggesting that's not the case? It's not as if Love & Mercy was a movie sanctioned by Brian Wilson or BriMel or whatever. I think whether or not it was "sanctioned" by them, Brian was a producer and was clearly involved in the production. It has his blessing. The use of actual masters in the soundtrack for instance? "Backbeat" primarily told the story of two dead men and the only Beatles recording used in the soundtrack was "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan. Apples and Oranges.
