Hey! does anyone knows what and where can i find the original photography in the best quality possible of what served for this famous image?
etc

or is that like, just a draw that has been used ever since? if so i'd still like to see the original, or where this visual first appeared

I know the quality sucks but that's the best I have.  It might have come from the A&E biography of Brian, which uses a lot of pictures/footage that haven't been used elsewhere.
52  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sandy (AKA Sherry She Needs Me or She Says That She Needs Me) on: February 09, 2017, 04:24:27 PM
one other thing I noticed is the backing track to the 1976 remake with new vocals is completely different from the "Sandy" that I'm familiar with on the Unsurpassed Masters boot. Is there a completely different backing track for the song that Brian did in the mid 60s that is unsurfaced or something?

I believe that the Unsurpassed Masters backing track was the first version done, then Brian went back and re-recorded it, which was the version used for "Sherry, She Needs Me". Vocals were only partially recorded for the first version, but these were later digitally "pasted" on to the 1976 version for MiC.

Nope, the backing track for "Sherry, She Needs Me" was recorded first on 3/29/65 with the wrecking crew.  "Sandy" was recorded with the group on 5/4 and 5/5/65.

The backing track for "Sherry" really needs an official release.

Excellent idea for a topic, orange22.

"IWFTD" includes a favourite Carol moment of mine----that bass run is the business!

If you mean the run during the fade section, that's actually Ray Pohlman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXUAVw_HRHo&t=4m40s

First released on the Smile Sessions box in 2011 and subsequently on Made in California in 2013.
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds 50 track listing on: June 24, 2016, 12:29:35 AM
The previously unreleased track 'Good Vibrations (Partial Vocal) is no doubt a great disappointment. Up until the vocal bridge, I felt it was an absolute revelation, since it's in stereo, but they omitted the 'hum-dee-daa' section. Such a shame. It shows that the extended vocal bridge is neglected by the people in charge. I hope future releases will include it, as for me it's not GV without that heavenly part.

Those vocals are not on the original single mix, nor the 1st stage vocal overdub reel that that new mix uses.

It's my video.  I disputed the copyright claim a while ago but it was rejected so there's not much I can do about it.  It's because the Sloop John B. Promo Film with the boys in Brian's swimming pool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSAoEf1Ib58) has been completely blocked by UMG and I used a clip of that at the tail end of the video.

This image has been popping up in better quality/no watermarks for a while now, but a recent Vox article on the Pet Sounds 50th included what is probably the full resolution image:

58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's musical arrangement inspirations for (primarily) Pet Sounds and Smile on: April 28, 2016, 12:50:37 AM
I'm not aware of Brian being into straight instrumental jazz (but then Rhapsody in Blue uses jazz) but I think his production for PS and Smile was a mix of Spector and instrumental exotica ("tiki") music like Martin Denny and Les Baxter plus the more avant garde Esquivel.  Definitely hear that influence on the PS instrumentals and Smile stuff like Worms, Wind Chimes, Holidays, I Wanna Be Around/Friday Night (Workshop), Cabinessence.
See, here's some stuff that I don't know anything about. Could you give me some albums/tracks to look for?
Martin Denny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2dQ3WbcF44
Les Baxter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTwwnEggw24
Esquivel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVdPjAKWkao

While I'm not sure if there's much evidence that Brian was a fan of this music, it was a huge genre in the late 50's and 60's and I agree that its influence can be heard in his arrangements, specifically on Pet Sounds.

Hmmm… spot the difference. Both from Spin CD website - one's illustrating the Japanese version, the other's the UK version. One of 'em's gotta be wrong…

The bottom version is the correct one...it matches their position in the final album cover.

Um... the spoken "I think I'll make a call" is hardly buried.
Talking about the droning backing vocals audible in that clip.

62  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did speeding up Caroline, No contribute to the single's lack of chart success? on: March 17, 2016, 01:25:11 AM
Not exactly answering your question, but I don't really like the original speed of Brian's vocals, it feels too low, I'd like a mix of the sped up vocals with the original speed backing track.
I think the track was sped up a half-step and then Brian recorded his vocals on top of that.  The "sped up" version sounds like his natural singing voice whereas the "original speed" version on the box set sounds slowed down.  I know that doesn't jibe with the official dogma, but that's what my ears hear.
63  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Believe In Miracles on: February 16, 2016, 02:17:55 PM
A composing connection, perhaps - ie. that one was derived from the musical ideas for the other, but I don't think Miracles was due to be *overlaid* on that CIFOTM fragment in the way shown on the Soundcloud link.

Roll Eyes I was not implying that at all.  Merely that one composition led to another, as with many Smile songs.
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Believe In Miracles on: February 16, 2016, 03:59:35 AM

Wowzers! Was that just overlayed and it fit perfectly, or was there some pitch correction to make it work? Either way, a missing piece of the puzzle it would seem... almost surprised it wasn't used in that very place during CIFOTM by Linnett/Boyd for TSS, unless the IBIM tape wasn't known about at the time.

It's been awhile since I made that, but I recall only using some very minor tempo correction on the "I Believe In Miracles" part to make them fit together.  I really think there is a connection between the two pieces.
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Pet Sound Sessions???? on: January 26, 2016, 11:55:17 PM
Leggo My Eggo features edited snippets of the tracking session for "Let's Go Away For Awhile" and the (complete?) tracking session for "Don't Talk".  LGAFAW is in the tape archive but the complete session was unbooted on the SOT release for some reason.  The tape for the tracking session for "Don't Talk" before the tape bounce is no longer in the tape archives.

The two tracks from "Don't Talk" were also on "Long Lost Surf Songs Vol. 2" but I'm not sure what release was first.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1965 archives on: December 22, 2015, 12:40:41 AM
I really wish they had at least found some way to finally release the unbooted tracking session/backing track for "Sherry She Needs Me", though I suppose the copyright for that is safe because they released the 1976 version that uses it on Made In California.  Still, there's stuff in the vaults that would have been nice to hear in better quality/remixed form.
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1965 archives on: December 01, 2015, 02:09:05 AM
I have faith that a 1965 archival release will be announced/available within the next two weeks (or the next few days even).  The Big Beat was announced on December 11th, 2013 and Keep An Eye On Summer was announced on December 2nd, 2014.

Huh  It's just a few seconds of Mike singing "Pom Pom Playgirl", which was officially released on Shut Down Vol. II.

I'm wondering if anyone has a higher res scan of this Italian 45.  I'd love to make a poster of it.

Isn't it Wally Heider?  That footage is from Summer 1967 ca. the "Leid In Hawaii" concert and subsequent "rehearsals" at Heider's studio.
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: August 27, 2015, 12:53:25 PM
Insignificant question!!!
So I've read that the Wilsons went to Disneyland twice a year and Dennis was a big fan of Tom Sawyer's island. Are there any pics of the Boys at DL?

The BBs are pretty much the unofficial soundtrack to Disney's California Adventure and I don't know why I associate Brian with Disneyland so much!!

There's this bit in the A&E bio on Brian about Murry taking them to Disneyland and Brian enjoying the Matterhorn.  Not sure of the original source.

72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there a Beach Boys/Barbara Eden connection? on: August 19, 2015, 03:52:53 AM
Barbara Eden was in the movie "Ride The Wild Surf".  Brian co-wrote the title song with Jan Berry and Roger Christian.

You can tell from this and their appearance in 2012 that Fallon is a huge BB fan.  I love how they captured that old Black and White video look with HD cameras.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Underrated + underappreciated BB background vocals on lesser-known BB songs on: July 21, 2015, 12:09:59 AM
The backing vocals on Pom Pom Playgirl (as heard on the recent "Keep an Eye On Summer" compilation) are pretty amazing and really made me appreciate the song more.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's music being influenced by 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon music on: July 18, 2015, 04:58:19 PM
There's this nugget from the Gaines book:
"[Tony Asher] thought Brian was a nice guy, but something of a Hawthorne hick, who found it next to impossible to express himself verbally. Sometimes Brian’s lack of sophistication manifested itself in small ways…Other times, his childishness was more pronounced, as when he halted work to watch Flipper on TV and wept at the tender moments."

I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that the often childlike Brian watched cartoons in his spare time.
