That percentage is definitely BS. Especially without an "other" category. Also the category "girls" is very general. Pretty much any song remotely about love would fall under that criterion. Funny that Dave Marks is the one obscured by the text overlay. "Don't Back Down"
Do It Again is also basically about the beach/surfing and was inspired by a surfing trip to San Onofre. Early versions of the song even have Mike sing "Get together and surf again", though I guess that doesn't count.

I like the polls, shouldn't Beach Boy fans enjoy comparing what they love about the band with other fans?
I feel like the polls are almost as much about comparing what people don't love about the band. Ultimately, I come to this board for the discussion...not to read lists of things people don't like. I wish they were annexed to their own section of the board.

Why did you have to bump an 8 year old thread to express your appreciation for Dennis in? While I do think it's a nice gesture to check if a topic's been touched on before making a new thread, this necro-bumping that's been going on is, IMO, ridiculous.
Also, if you continue to make statements like "he sure as hell was the second-most talented member in terms of songwriting" as absolute, irrefutable truths...don't be surprised when people challenge them. It's a discussion board.

As for Fun, Fun, Fun, I just simply never liked it. There's just something about that song which is unbearable for me. Like I remember the first time I heard that song, which was at a 50's diner. It put me off the BB's for a while. I don't have to like every hit song they had.
You certainly don't, but I don't see what the point of trying to continually convince others it's a bad or "overrated" song, especially if you won't even go into why you don't like it in any greater detail. In terms of discussion it's a non-starter.

I don't hate any of those songs you mentioned, I just don't think they're as good as other people say they are. Why? Does the word "overrated" mean that you only sort-of like them? When I said Fun, Fun, Fun is overrated, it's because it's one of their most famous songs, and that's something I simply never understood as I've literally never liked it. I guess it's a matter of different tastes
Five reasons why I like Fun, Fun, Fun 1. One of the best guitar intros/licks that Carl Wilson ever recorded and IMO expands on the Chuck Berry influence and transforms it into something far greater. Fender guitar heaven 2. It's a great story song with some clever wordplay and imagery. Love the change from "she'll have Fun, Fun, Fun" to "we'll have Fun, Fun, Fun". 3. Production-wise one of Brian's best "fast songs" and a clear sign of changing form and sophistication in the wake of expanded wrecking crew involvement. Like an artist adding more colors to his pallete. The horns in particular that were always a bit buried in the mix but revealed in the new stereo mix on MIC are great. 4. Brian's wordless falsetto in the tag is one of the best vocals he ever recorded, and the fade itself is one of their best 5. It represents California in the cultural zeitgeist better than perhaps any song they recorded, and that is probably why most people enjoy it. It's (literally) a fun song that conjures images of sexy girls, convertibles and hamburgers. What is there not to enjoy about it? I think if you explained why you didn't like songs in a similar manner it would offer more for others to discuss than just using vague descriptors like "overrated", "slow" or "boring". Just my opinion.

Is that really that much of a stretch for me to say that you prefer the Brother era when Brian was not very involved in the group than to when he was in complete control?
In a way, yes. In a way, no. Don't forget the Brother era also spawned the horrible 15 Big Ones. My favourite era of the BB's is the 66-73 era, which includes Brian's masterpieces. And though you may think I find Brian overrated, the truth could not be more different. Here's some of the songs I really like from him: snip I am in no way a Brianista, and am not the Brian fanatic that a lot of people are around here, but In no way do I consider him overrated. He created one of the best albums of all-time and it was him that got me into the BB's. And while I do prefer the post-Pet Sounds pre-15 Big Ones work over the pre-Pet Sounds work, that doesn't mean I think of him as overrated. It's just my own personal taste! While it's reassuring that you do like a lot of Brian's songs, I still think your taste is greatly at odds with what the Beach Boys were and are to many people. I guess it's hard for me to wrap my head around someone who hates Shut Down, Dance Dance Dance, Busy Doin Nothin' AND Marcella simultaneously. I guess I'm also tired of the word "overrated" used as some sort of criticism. Overrated by whom, compared to what? It's such a vague, meaningless term...devoid of any depth. If you're going to assault the most-well known or acclaimed songs in the BB canon on this board ad nauseam, that's fine...but it would be nice if you could at least provide some insight as to why they're not as good as we think they are.

Going to have to disagree. I don't think it's overrated at all. Fun, Fun, Fun is the Beach Boy's most overrated song, hands down! Runner-ups include 409, Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe, Catch A Wave (oh ESPECIALLY Catch A Wave), Girls On The Beach, Dance Dance Dance, Busy Doin' Nothin', I Went To Sleep, Time To Get Alone, Do It Again, Marcella, Had To Phone Ya, Goin' On You might as well just post "Brian Wilson is overrated" and be done with it.

Still blown away by "Mother May I". Might just be a weird little song for most people, but for my money hearing an unreleased BW song from 1963 in stellar quality automatically beats most of the unreleased stuff on MIC. It makes me wonder what other gems will come out of these copyright extension releases if they go on.

Well, they definitely autotuned parts of the "Be With Me" demo on MIC, so...
What??? Can you please pinpoint exactly where and when, with specific time(s) please? I can hear it at little places all over that track, but it's particularly evident at 1:55 ("a part of me") where the note shifts so much, so quickly and unnaturally that Dennis sounds like T pain. I think you are mistaken about this. There is no unnatural vacillation between pitches around 1:55 where you are saying it's most evident. Of course there's no way for either one of us to prove this anyway -- we only have our ears to inform us -- but i'm just throwing in my assessment. I dunno man, the way the note fluctuates there does not sound natural to me. It sounds like either autotuning or severe digital processing (perhaps a lot of noise/hiss reduction was necessary to improve the quality of the demo). Either way, without a bootleg version or confirmation from Boyd or Linett there's no way to know for sure. There IS autotuning on other tracks sprinkled throughout MIC, so it's not exactly crazy to assume they might have used it to sweeten the vocals on a demo deemed too rough for public consumption. That's exactly what they did on "Sherry, She Needs Me"

But without Endless Summer, they're irrelevant, and that's far worse.
About that, they're irrelavent now, and have been for quite a while. At least they were releasing great albums consistently up to Holland. Can't say that after the release of Endless Summer. And at least up to Endless Summer, they were performing mainly their more recent songs, not just the older hits. That also changed, and after that they focused on just the oldies, as far as I know, with maybe 1 or 2 newer songs Making it sound like Endless Summer was the sole cause for the Beach Boys to turn into a traveling oldies jukebox is ignoring the larger social issues at play. You have to understand the political reality of the early to mid-70's. Americans were fed up with Vietnam and Watergate and longed for simplicity. Movies like "American Graffiti" encapsulated that desire to revisit the recent past (the Beach Boys were featured on the soundtrack, quite prominently, with "All Summer Long" played during the end credits). Endless Summer was created and released at the perfect time to capitalize on this wave of nostalgia. The Beach Boys would have probably turned into an oldies band at that time regardless. It was what the public wanted.

I don't think an article in HuffPo is worth being too worked up about. The LA or NY Times, yes, or some other legit news outlet. I don't think anyone reads much about entertainment in HuffPo. It tends to get most page hits for "breaking news" (as they see fit to cover it) and low brow tabloid type stories. It's like a cross between the Drudge Report and TMZ.com.
Yeah, but it seems like 99% of the stuff on FB (which is unfortunately how a lot of people these days get their news) are people reposting fluff-laden, tabloid "list" articles like this. Regardless of the source, you'd expect a guy firmly entrenched in the music biz to get his facts right, and at the very least redact the bad info when called out on it.

I think All I Want To Do especially worked great live, and should have become a live staple instead of ageing songs such as Surfin' USA and "shudder" Barbara Ann.
I understand not liking "Barbara Ann" (just a throwaway cover on a throwaway album whose popularity got out of control) but why knock Surfin' USA, the song that launched the band onto the National stage? A song that, despite being lifted from Chuck Berry, is quintessentially Brian Wilson/Beach Boys. I don't get why in order to compliment the group's later, less popular output you have to disparage the early stuff. It seems like you only enjoy a very narrow spectrum of what The Beach Boys recorded. As great as those 3 songs are, they're more slower ballads and not the type of music you would play at a party
On what planet is this a rational way of determining the quality of music? Particularly the music by a band who is more known for ballads than hard rock songs? I would never play Pet Sounds at a party, and yet IMO it's the best thing they released. At least you're posting this stuff in the right thread.

I'm Waiting for the Day is all Brian.
This is...not true and is repeated here all the time. It's Mike doing the bass vocal and he's also audible at 1:09 ("Baby don'tcha know") and he's doing the "No's" and "uh-uh" starting at 2:37 on the tag. This is clearer if you listen to the various vocal overdub mixes on the SOT box. I also hear at least Carl and Mike on the BGV.
