26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine Postcards From California FAKE Vinyl?! on: January 02, 2019, 06:55:39 PM
It's very possible that your copy isn't bootleg, but someone just took the postcard from it and shrink-wrapped it again. My official copy (with the postcard) has blurry artwork. Pretty sure it's  just due to the original image edits being in a low resolution made only for CD. They scaled it up fairly well, but I get the feeling that they were working with a low res image to begin with.

No, I love Sunshine!!!!

(Yeah I know that makes me one of like 3 people)
There are 4 of us now. I'd go as far as to say it's my second favorite song off of the album, after Goin' On.

I picked up a copy of Postcard today at a local shop that I never think to check that's only 4 miles from my girlfriend's house. I haven't opened it yet, but I'm kind of excited to see the signature.

I don't mind the sound of vinyl even if it can't match the fidelity that modern technology possesses.  I have my share of vinyl if the album doesn't have too many tracks I would skip.  What I don't understand is why cassette tapes are making a comeback...

Pretty simple: not every band has $4000 and 6 months to self-press their own album. CDs don't sell at concerts anymore, but a cassette for around $6? It's an easy impulse buy and they cost less than  $2 each to manufacture and you don't have to make more than 100.

I'm surprised no clips of the christmas songs have surfaced yet. I keep checking instagram and youtube. Aside from a 10 second clip of "auld lang syne," nothing.

Another article featuring Al. Matt away dealing with a family illness unfortunately. All the best Matt.

Sorry to hear that. It just occurred to me that that's probably the reason that they've been performing the pet sounds sets in place of greatest hits lately. They probably didn't have enough time to rehearse after finding out that Matt wouldn't be able to do the tour.

New Pet Sounds Date for JUNE 2019...the "Artpark" in NYC...
Ugh. I hope he at least gets a break from it before having to do that.

Just got home from Atlanta. Brian threw us a curveball tonight and took a show that was advertised as a GH show and threw in the entire PS album. I was surprised. Nice to finally hear "Feel Flows" from this tour.

Interesting. The show I purchased tickets to coming up in a couple weeks was advertised as Greatest Hits, but now says Pet Sounds on the venue website and Brian's website.
I'm guessing they didn't have time to rehearse both sets before the tour, but that's kind of a bummer. I'm glad I didn't go to the Atlanta show after seeing the setlist. I love pet sounds, but I had a good enough experience with it in 2016 that I don't want to taint the memory of it.

Is it just me, or does Bob's voice sound less awful than it has in the recent past?
Absolutely. I was at the show that recording is from and I was shocked. He's been so much more present since his rhythm guitarist left the tour and he's had to fill in the space with his piano playing.

Bob's at it again. I don't feel like playing through the beach boys best of, but please tell me I'm not crazy and that intro sounds familiar?

Edit: it's not verbatim, but it's basically the intro to Dance, Dance, Dance. Bob's officially messing with us.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love/touring group Christmas album on: October 25, 2018, 10:04:11 PM
Huh. I'm not a fan, but I just skimmed through and it's not exactly what I was expecting. "Celestial Celebration" feels very much like 15 big ones era beach boys.

I'm avoiding listening to the whole thing until about Thanksgiving, but it's a pretty interesting track sequencing that mirrors the Beach Boys Christmas Album. As expected, the vocals are overly processed, but actually listenable this time. The processing on "celestial celebration" actually works.

The last 5 tracks of the album do nothing for me, but I can't be angry at Mike for wanting to do some tracks with his family at this point in his career.

Edit: I listened another time and aside from brickwalled compression, I'm kind of wishing that more of TWGMTR's vocals were produced like that one track.

Any idea of the MSRP of this? The first 1000 copies for RSD included a signed postcard.

Unfortunately the other shows are too far away.
It's hard to get off for concerts. But not going to this one opens up possibility of seeing Bob Dylan in Mobile, Alabama in mid October.

Bob's been great so far on this tour. That's probably the right call. I love Al as much as anyone on here, but I have a feeling that Bob in good form will be a rarer event.

I'm not feeling "reason for the season" at all, but I kind of knew I wouldn't going in with a title like that. With that being said, I wasn't expecting shortenin' bread version 6 or so in the band's discography. Production is miles better than Mike's last album, so I still have a little hope that I'll enjoy a couple of tracks off of it.
41  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Book recommendations on songwriting, lyric writing, and music theory? on: October 06, 2018, 10:05:35 AM
For lyric writing, i really like Pat Pattison's "writing better lyrics", but most of the material is covered in his Coursera songwriting course if you want to go that route. It doesn't focus much on lyrical content necessarily, but just structure and phrasing to make existing lyrics connect. I've edited lyrics differently since.

That version of WIBNTLA is revelatory. Thank you for this.

The new Richard Swift has been on repeat the past few days. "Broken Finger Blues" is so good.

It almost makes me wonder if David is rejoining Mike's group.

So THIS is why there's a press conference?  Cheesy Roll Eyes

In all seriousness, though, it looks like he had a discussion with Jimmy Buffett. I can't say I'm a fan of this, or even the target demographic, but at least Mike's version of Margaritaville will have more vegetarian/vegan options for me to eat if I ever end up at one.

Holy sh*t he looks old. Like...triple digits. Also...how could anyone be excited by this garbage?...
I kind of like mike embracing his age. The mustache looks good on him for a change, too.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: July 04, 2018, 08:14:40 PM
You can definitely tell that there's something going on with mike's vocal, but I'm not sure what it is anymore. If you listen to the first line of "fun, fun, fun" you can hear two mike love vocals simultaneously on the first word "well" before it cuts out like it was a mistake.

It really doesn't matter in a situation like that, though. Mike's vocal has been live and fairly strong the two times I've seen him in concert.
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: July 04, 2018, 08:03:23 PM
I've been fooled before, but it sounded live to me. Not saying there wasn't anything extra--certainly could have been. Much improved compared to years past with the pre-recorded vocals/tracks.

Pretty sure it's lipsynced or at least pitch corrected a bit, but it's much better than last year. I feel like scott totten's opening riff for "fun, fun, fun" had a tiny slightly muted string mistake in it, so that leads me to believe that it wasn't live for the broadcast, it was at least just a recent live performance's audio.

Oh, yes, Frankie Valli sounds just like he did when he cut his original recordings! A true miracle of miracles....
I have to assume that this is a jab at his lipsyncing?
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In my room /w Tammy Wynette and other unfinished Stars&Stripes songs on: June 26, 2018, 07:29:13 PM
I was wonderin' if "In my room" off of the Stars&Stripes sessions was actually ever finished? We have a recording on the DVD ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGntEUmk3dE ) and a version released on "Tammy Wynette Remembered" with only Brian's vocals ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6B0hGjSgzA ). Now, I don't know if the DVD version is a finished master but it definitely sounds like it wasn't mixed like a master.
This performance actually was one of the highlights from the project. First Tammy's fantastic reading of the song stands out. But also it sounds more country than much of the released songs.
And am I right that of "Sail on sailor" only the rehearsal performance on the DVD exists and no studio recording? Also, Merle Haggard for whom Al recorded the "California saga"-demo AFAIK never actually got around to work on it? Will we ever get a release of a finished "In my room" with Tammy and the Beach Boys?

Am I missing something? The first half of the song seems to be her vocals on the link you posted for "Tammy Wynette Remembered."
