Listening to Surfs Up and Sunflower on this set I kinda wish they had done new mixes of them. The new mixes sound a whole world better, no high end sharpness and no distortion on vocals.
Or, you know, actually ran them through Desper's matrix like they were originally intended to begin with.

Bit torn on the new master of Sunflower - the added treble makes the tape hiss really audible on some tracks (probably a gain staging issue from the time it was recorded, of course not really something you can fix just by remastering). It's a brittle sound overall. Funny sounding record down to the way it was engineered I think - it's got a bit of a brittle, plastic-y quality to it at times.
I'm with you completely on that. It's far too compressed, as well. The rest of the box set sounds much better (even surf's up sounds better than Sunflower's new master), but the remastered versions of the albums aren't what I was really interested in in the first place. The outtakes are pretty fantastic. It's taking a while to digest all of the material, but I think I'm just going to make it into a playlist of the previously unreleased tracks (not just new mixes) and listen to it on a drive in a bit.

I was waiting on hearing the new master for sunflower to decide if I should buy that version on vinyl, but the Analogue Productions copy is sitting in my cart now...

All I have to say about this is...how fucking dare you endanger the safety of your fans in a situation like this. A man has the right to learn a living, but there are better and safer ways to do it.

I'm all for mitigating danger, but unless Mike Love kidnapped those people and forced them to be there, the band endangered no one. Those people chose to buy tickets and attend the show on their own, free will.
Yes, but the people that are having to shop in grocery stores with them or serving food to them days after the concert, when the concert attendees are potentially spreading the disease, aren't as lucky. Many of the people that the attendees will interact with and infect are working out of necessity and don't have the option of staying at home.

Surely those fans have to take some responsibility for their own safety if they are taking the decision to attend?

I find the whole thing bizarre overall and wouldn't have risked attending, but as far as I know it is not clear yet how much outdoor events like this contribute to the spread of the virus. Someone may correct me if they know better, but I don't think there has been evidence that, say, the recent anti-racism protests contributed significantly to the spread of the virus, and those were attended by thousands.

(To be clear I am in no way suggesting that it is "okay" to attend a concert on the basis that people got together to protest against an appalling murder).

The fact that it's outdoors helps quite a bit, but unless there was a mask ordinance in effect then it easily could've endangered attendees, everyone they encounter after the concert, etc.

The protests actually are proof of how much masks work. There hasn't been a spike in cases in cities where protests were occurring, but the spikes are all only in states that reopened early.

To me it sounds like Little Saint Nick, in particular the version that's included as a bonus track in the reissue of Brian's first solo album: https://youtu.be/OJZTmL-hCBI?t=64
I've never noticed it until that link, but you're right.

Bingo. I will usually be the first to defend Mike Love's touring act, but anyone that is performing during this pandemic that doesn't have to be doing it to survive, pay rent on a modest home, or feed their families has lost respect from me for quite a while.

For those like you Nate who know auto tune, how would you rate those clips on a scale of 1-10? (with the Live CD being an 11)
I thought Mike was minimal if at all, and the backing 2-3 myself.
I'd rate it a 5-6. The high harmonies together seem inhuman. The threshhold settings on it are too harsh.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love Planning New Vocal Album on: May 29, 2020, 11:21:40 AM

First off, where is this horrendous autotune people are talking about on No Pier Pressure? I don't really hear it. Maybe I'm deaf.

You're not deaf at all. The most simple explanation is you're not hearing that horrendous autotune all over NPP perhaps because it's not there. And for 5 years as people have been saying it's so horrendous on that album, no one when asked can give a specific example for us all to hear where the autotune is horrendous on NPP. I even offered a bottle of wine for anyone who would, and no one took me up on the offer. So I eventually drank the wine. There was one guy who insisted it was so bad the album was unlistenable, and when asked for an example, he came back with literally a millisecond of some audio tick on a Blondie Chaplin vocal, so he didn't get the wine obviously, he was a joker.

An example is what I was hoping Nate would provide after he mentioned the autotune on NPP so we could all hear a specific example someone else says they heard. Maybe he'll reply with some.

It's 100% there, just done well in most parts. I suspect it's melodyne rather than autotune, as well. If it's used by someone capable it can be very I'm not in the mood to listen to NPP right now, but I'll find some examples. I wish they wouldn't use it, but most musicians do now. It can be done well.

Said it before, will always say it:

The Beach Boys Love You is Brian at his most honest and straightforward. If there's ever one single source that will tell you all you need to know about him, it's that album.

Yeah it's certainly his most convoluted and polarizing album.  The production is horrible, yet at the same time perfectly fits and enhances the material on that album.   Shrug
What exactly makes the production “horrible?”
Its synthesizers, gated reverb and keyboards.
Compared to some other albums in the 70s and 80s, its produced and mixed very well.
All the vocals come through clear unlike parts of surfs up, it’s not mixed horribly like So Tough, it doesn’t sound cheap like KTSA, and it’s extremely warm unlike parts of BB85 and SIP

I'll put it this way: how would an album like Pet Sounds be received if Brian had used all those cheesy "farting" synthesizers to record it?

So prototype Moogs are cheesy? There's a reason they're still used heavily in the indie rock world and still sell well starting at $800+. Hell, there's even a music festival named after the synth/man that invented it.

Seems scammy and like nothing happened?

Unless you are in the future, that's probably because nothing has happened yet? It still 12 hours or so away until the broadcast starts.

Time/days mean very little right now and I was about 7 adult beverages in and saw that my phone said it was Saturday. Whoops. Cheesy

I saw 12 Sides of Summer merch at the Puyallup Fair show last month - including Mike's CD. The CD was $15; the t-shirts were something like $30 or $35 dollars. That's my complaint - why are people forking over so much for just a shirt, compared to owning the music? And I am not singling out Mike or the Beach Boys; it's this way at every concert now. $35 for a t-shirt that is going to wear out in a few years versus music that will be with me the rest of my life?  Huh Huh
I think it's around to stay, especially since most venues take a pretty large merch cut percentage. I've even heard of venues having a minimum price that shirts can be sold for.

There's currently a promotion for $25 tickets for their Louisville show in February if you use the code "SUM2019". That price includes fees and everything.

There are a lot of clips on Instagram under the #brianwilson tag, too. Mostly of Good Vibrations and California Girls, but someone got a minute of "heroes and villains"

I'll see if I can find it on desktop.

Any reports from the show? I'm curious how much they addressed Nicky Wonder's passing.

I grabbed tickets to see them during livenation's $20 concert week and I'm starting to get excited about their upcoming Atlanta date.

Not that it matters, but the Mike Love logo on the hats are just photoshopped on there in both promo shots. Poorly, too.

are we seriously getting a beach boys reunion- do you think brian will be involved, or will it be more like al & david marks joining up with mike n bruce.  or would it be more like 2012 with a mix of brian band and mike band.
What makes you think we're getting a reunion at all?
Just got back from the Infinity Hall show in Norfolk. I don’t think I can put into words just how incredible everything was. I attended Al’s storyteller show last year in Manhattan and the acoustics of the Infinity Hall are much better in my opinion. The performances by Al, Matt, and Jeff were incredible as always, and I’d actually say this was the best I’ve ever heard them sound. Al flubbed some lines on a few songs but that is expected and part of the charm to be honest.

Edit: Also forgot to mention that at one point during the show, Al mentioned that the Brian Wilson video biography on his daily life should be released later this year, and then mentioned a new Beach Boys video documentary that might come out in 2020. But even more exciting than that, he hinted that a tour for 2020 may be in the works, and the way he made it sound it certainly sounded like he was hinting at a reunited Beach Boys tour, ala 2012. He didn’t give any specifics, but the way he was acting and how he announced it I can only think that’s what he was hinting at. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Thanks! That's pretty exciting.

No problem. Hoping for it too because I wasn’t a hardcore fan at the time.
I was in 2012, but I was in a band that had a gig booked when the Atlanta show was announced. I should've bailed on the gig in retrospect, but it was supposed to be a pretty big show for us that ended up being a flop.

Very interesting. I have no desire to see Brian perform Pet Sounds again, but I'd be down for a best of setlist from both.

I'm actually somewhat hopeful for this. It'll probably be trash, but the production on those two tracks on Reason For the Season was tolerable and "Celestial Celebration" was by far my favorite track on it. Maybe we'll get one or two decent tracks out of it.

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine Postcards From California FAKE Vinyl?! on: January 05, 2019, 07:38:15 AM
It has the lovely blue vinyl and sounds better than a bootleg vinyl.  I thought it may have been resealed, but the shrink wrap seems to be consistent with an original.  It was sealed about an inch down from the top of the back cover.  Other originals seemed to have been sealed in the same place.  I haven't heard back from Friday Music yet.
Did it have stickers on the shrink wrap? My copy had some from the label mentioning that it was on colored vinyl and limited to 1000/ first time on vinyl or something of that nature.
